THUG was instrumental in preteen me’s short-lived desire to become a skater.

I never even figured out how to ollie.

The story is really easy to snap over your knee when it comes to logic (i.e. doing impossible lip tricks on power lines while still trying to work your way into grungy sewer skate competitions because you’re “unproven”), but it does follow a reasonable progression. You and Eric are supposed to still be teens who are seriously impressed by celebrity skaters doing tricks that would be hard in real life.

I forget, is this the game where you can change a rail trick without hopping, or was that introduced in THUG 2?

I think you can. You can also change flatland tricks (like manuals and handstands) and do double or triple flip tricks.

This game is just pure, distilled nostalgia for the early 2000s for me. When it came out I was still in middle school, still thinking "Oh yeah, I could probably be a skater!" I had this kid's Star Wars Episode I skateboard that my mom had bought at Walmart years before that I tried to skate around on. I watched the bail videos in the Tony Hawk games so many times.

I never made it past skating in a straight line and making gentle turns around the corner in my neighborhood. Ollies and manuals were completely beyond me.

Actually I think we could use this thread to learn some neat facts about the different skaters we meet and how they got into the sport.

SKATER FACTS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kRTFNU4ZaE

Chad Muska is one of the younger pro skaters in the game, 27 at the time of the game's release. While growing up in Phoenix, he fell in love with skateboarding after his BMX bike got stolen and moved to San Diego with basically no money and a sketchbook. He spent a long time homeless and sleeping on Mission Beach before finally gaining some prominence with the above video in 1998.

One thing we both have in common is a love of footwear, though he trends more toward skate shoes and basketball shoes while I go more toward stuff like SeaVees, Chucks, and weird military surplus stuff. He's still had some issues with authority and maturity as he's grown older, getting arrested in 2011 for spraying graffiti about how awesome he is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u495yUG6dMw

Stacy Peralta doesn't get a whole lot of explanation in the game, and you're just kind of expected to know who he is. He's actually one of the most influential skaters in history, being one of the Z-Boys immortalized in the Lords of Dogtown film. As a young man in the 1970s, Peralta helped codify modern skateboarding by taking the sport from simple street surfing into aerial and lip tricks in empty pools.

Peralta's the old guard, literally, and has generally retired from skating as he's gotten older to become a director instead.

So those "soggy mob flips" you were confused about, I looked it up. A mob flip is just a really sketchy, sloppy kickflip where you push the edge of the board down as you jump. This causes the board to hit the ground before you land on it, which looks lovely.

SKATER FACTS

Eric Koston is another of the original THPS skaters. His father was in the US Air Force and stationed overseas when he fell in love with a local Thai woman, so Eric is a Thai-American born in Thailand (funny enough, in the exact same hospital as pro skater and shoe designer Alphonzo Rawls). Along with his skating, he's expanded into clothing and shoe brands, a privately owned skate park, and even part ownership of the Saint Archer Brewing Company.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWSZFqxwf9U

I'm pretty sure that "Thomas" that the skate park sign-up guy was fist bumping is Jamie Thomas. He's the owner and founder of Zero, one of the prominent skateboard companies in this game. He garnered notoriety for attempting to ollie down an 18 foot drop at Point Loma High School; as his jump technically failed due to his board snapping in half, dozens of skaters attempted it until the stairs were blocked off in 2005. These steps are included in the School II level in THPS2.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pdoADutGZg

Bam Margera is probably the only pro skater better known for his non-skating ventures. Nicknamed "Bam Bam" as a child for his habit of running into walls on purpose, Bam turned his self-destructive behavior into a career as part of the original Jackass crew. On a more positive note, his close friendship with Ville Valo of HIM (possibly through their shared alcoholism and self-destructive tendencies) allowed the gothic rock band to get their foot in the door in the United States and become the biggest Finnish band of all time before their disbanding this past New Year's Eve.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP8V_Jel0k4

Andrew Reynolds is the co-founder and now sole owner of Baker Skateboards. He got his pro start when Tony Hawk called him to recruit him for Birdhouse, his personal skating company. He's a bit of a weird dude: while he gave up drugs and alcohol in his mid-20s and even stopped smoking after his daughter was born, he possibly suffers from mild obsessive-compulsive disorder that manifests in ritually tapping objects or saying unusual phrases before performing tricks.

So yeah, that's a real skate park in Tampa just called the Skatepark of Tampa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_ByKXEGqik

SKATER FACTS

Ryan Clements is a Tampa native who attends a lot of local events. He's not a major pro by any means, but he was instrumental in the formation of the Skatepark of Tampa and is a major part of The Boardr, a skateboard shop that also works to create and host many competitions. It's a cool shout out from Neversoft when he could have easily been replaced by a generic NPC or another pro.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G92hHKhzbE

If you don't know who Tony Hawk is, you're probably not the audience for this game. Tony Hawk is the single most famous skateboarder in the world, the one that anyone and their mother can name if they can only name one professional skateboarder. Tony predominately does vert skating (skating on ramps and half-pipes, as opposed to street skating in random public locations) and is most famous for being the first skater confirmed to land a 900 degree spin; he was beaten in 2012 by 12-year-old Tom Schaar, who performed a 1080 degree spin.. He's extremely intelligent as well as energetic, and his company Birdhouse is still running today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnvPt_a7iOQ

The British guy in the suit who appears at the end is Geoff Rowley of Liverpool, former co-owner of Flip. When he got his start in 1989, Liverpool had basically no skate culture and extremely slim pickings for parts, so he had to even skate without griptape for a while. Rowley was arrested in 2009 after illegally performing a flip trick across two roofs, but Flip managed to retain the footage.

Also I think this is the first time in the LP (but not in the series) Officer Dick has appeared. As far as I know, he's a fictional character, but I always thought he was inspired by the police officer that's a skating fan in the classic "In Search of Animal Chin" tape. (A video by Powell-Perralta made in the 80s of a bunch of skaters, including many in this game, skating all over the world, and is regarded as the best skating video ever)

SKATER FACTS

Paul Rodriguez Jr., nicknamed "P-Rod", is probably most known for his X Games performances and being the son of Paul Rodriguez Sr., stand-up comedian and part owner of the Laugh Factory in Hollywood where Michael Richards infamously dropped N-bombs. He's probably the youngest skater in the game, only 20 at the time of its release. While he wants to expand into acting like his father, he's spent a large part of his career co-founding or becoming the owner of a ton of skateboarding, clothing, shoe, and accessory brands. He's one of the co-founders of St. Archer Brewing along with Eric Koston.

SKATER FACTS

Rodney Mullen is sometimes viewed as the Tony Hawk of street skating, but he may very well be the single most influential modern skateboarder ever. He's been credited with the invention of the kickflip, heelflip, impossible flip, 360 flip, casper slide, and 540 flip (among many other tricks) and the first use of ollies off of flat ground instead of a way of getting more air off a ramp. Without Mullen, the kind of skateboarding in this game would not exist.

secret preview of the new video because I'll be out of town over the weekend

SKATER FACTS

Bob Burnquist is our resident Brazilian, born in Rio De Janeiro to an American father and Brazilian mother. He got his start skating in Sao Paulo as a kid before moving to the United States, where he began medaling in the X Games. He became the first skateboarder to land a "fake 900" (rotating in the opposite direction of the natural rotation you'd have off a ramp) and the fifth verified person to land a 900 at all. He's very into organic food and ecological awareness, and his Action Sports Environmental Coalition even worked with Chipotle to provide healthy and organic fast food.

One of the most prominent parts of his lifestyle is Dreamland, the California home that he turned into his own private skate park. A giant ramp to cross a 70 foot gap into a quarterpipe, a vert bowl, and a loop are only some of the features on Bob's property.

It's really apparent how much simpler the games were back in the old days when so many gaps are "Make this tiny jump across 10 feet" or "Grind this one rail on the ground. That's it."

chitoryu12
Apr 24, 2014

Jamesman posted:

There was more of an attempt to have gaps be an emulation of actual skating challenges, where they were just spots to hit like in real skating. As the games went on, they transformed into being more like hidden collectables, so you would explore an area and see if you could chain two sections together through crazy jumps, or doing unconventional things around setpieces.

There's always been crazy gaps since the first game though. Right off the bat, you're flying over a halfpipe, through a glass walkway extension.

I think there was also a need to keep going bigger and badder with the stunts. There's only so many times you can just leap between two picnic tables before the game starts becoming tedious. Now your "untrained amateur" that has to suck up to Tony Hawk to get into a contest is doing five 900s in a line that starts with them diving off a roof and ends with them grinding a live power line to crash through a bank window, yet nobody trusts that they have any talent unless they can complete a series of challenges.

As a kid, I thought the Kiss concert was the coolest thing.

I find Kiss to be a really hilarious band in hindsight. They put on the most extreme persona possible, with fake blood and face paint and the most over-the-top "sci-fi warrior" costumes one could ever assemble. Looking at them, you'd expect them to be playing black metal where every song is exactly the same loud pounding on instruments with lyrics growled so deep that they're incomprehensible even to the rest of the band. And then you actually listen to the music and it's the most benign dad rock in the world.

SKATER FACT

Arto Saari is our token Finn, who's been riding with Flip for most of his professional career. He temporarily left Flip for a few years after fellow team skaters Shane Cross died and Ali Boulala was seriously injured when they went on a drunken motorcycle ride (resulting in Boulala being sentenced to 4 years in prison as the driver). He's also a longtime photographer with a vintage film camera collection (something I share with him) and is highly in demand for advertising photography.
