You didn't miss much. American Wasteland isn't too bad, but it's bloated.

Project 8 and Proving Ground, however, are really bad. Project 8 has a bunch of missions that rely on ragdoll physics (you know, those physics known for their rigid consistency), which Proving Ground is just boring. Both games are also insanely tough, scaling the difficulty for veterens of the series who were getting tired of nailing 50-million-point combos and were looking for a challenge.

Kind of fell off of the series after that though, and I don't really remember why. American Wasteland is the only one after this I played (not counting the travesty that was HD), and I can't really remember it at all. I've already decided that once I buy a PS4, my first game is going to be THPS5.

4 was definitely a transition period where they knew they wanted to do bigger levels, but didn't quite know how to make missions for them.

If you think HD was bad, THPS5 makes it look like a masterpiece.

I've never played or seen THUG before, but right away this game feels like a joke. It's so... serious(?) the way it treats itself. I was laughing during the Chad Muska cutscene, it felt like they were honestly expecting me to be jaw droppingly impressed. It feels like a satire, but I don't think I think it's earnest. Everything about the game is so dated and out of place. From the graphics to the storyline to the gameplay it feels straight out of the 90s, yet it came out in 2003.

I think the most serious parts of the story are the fact it even has a story, and some moments later on. Overall though, it knows what kinda game this is and just uses a light plot to chain things together.

The whole thing with Chad Muska was meant to display a bit of comical excess for sure. Bulletproof siding and 7 televisions for an SUV?

Also if you think this game seems dated, wait until you see THUG2.

The idea is to just keep a good balance with completing missions and getting gaps when I feel it's efficient. It certainly takes a lot of planning and memorization, but I don't think Moscow is going to be any harder than something like Manhattan in that regard.

What IS hard is some of these missions that I'd totally forgotten about before committing to this, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Someone in Discord just asked me what a "gap" was.

In the context of the Tony Hawk games, gaps are the blue text that comes up by accomplishing something in that designated area or on designated objects, usually in some sort of transition from one thing to another. They range in complexity, and they can be integrated into combos for added score and multiplier.

They've been in every Tony Hawk game, but it was Pro Skater 2 that first introduced the concept of "collecting" them for completion, with a gap checklist. This wasn't in Pro Skater 3, but was brought back afterwards in 4 and after.

It's a game-ified version of actual skateboarding, where they look for spots to show off some kind of skill. Airing over a channel, jumping a set of stairs, grinding a long rail, and so forth; That concept is implemented in the games, but it's just taken a step further to match the unrealistic abilities of your skateman.

Let's run down a few things here.

It takes a lot of time to practice not only the THUG levels, but the levels from the earlier games, so I don't expect myself to update more than once a week. I don't want to put up videos faster than I can make them.

I also struggle with audio balancing, and have been working to improve that. In the case of this game, you've got the game audio, my commentary, and the music I'm adding in. I would like to hear your opinions on how it all sounds and if I should make any changes.

Speaking of music, the last Tony Hawk LP I did, I used MIDI files of songs from the first four games in the series. This game's soundtrack doesn't lend itself to doing something similar, and I didn't want to make you listen to the same tracks as the last game, so I opted to use some video game music composed by the super-awesome Tim Follin. Also instead of just letting the music run continuously through the video, I've been cutting out when there is game dialogue, so it's not competing for your attention. Are these things working out for you?

I notice that my introduction videos get fewer views than the first proper video for the LPs. I've been doing these instead of written OP text dumps or talking a bunch at the beginning of the regular videos, so you aren't really missing anything if you just want to get into the LP proper (hence, the "Part 0"), but I want to know your thoughts on if this is working out for you guys, or if you really just prefer stuff written out in the thread. Or if you DO like the intro videos, if there's anything I should do differently for them.

THPS2 had bios for each skater, and you can always unlock bonus videos. It woulda been nice if they continued to build on this and have more unlockables to learn more about the people, but it never bothered me that I didn't know Stacy Peralta's history because the game didn't include a free copy of Z-Boys.

Yeah, they always take real-life skate locations/obstacles and put them into the games. It doesn't work out so hot at times though, because you're modeling replicas of places where people skate like normal humans with normal physics and gravity, and then trying to skate them with your crazy flippy moon man. Kona in THPS4 was particularly bad because of this.

The Mall isn't as bad because there's a lot of optional stuff to do like skate up in the lights or the little side alcoves that are semi half pipes. The Downhill Jam has some areas with two spots tops, but it's a pain to do both in the same run, and the track railroads you hard.

Yeah, the Mall doesn't feel as linear because it has some more branching patch, and it's a more gentle slop so you can turn around. Downhill Jam is extremely linear, with the only real branch being that horrible side path to get the hidden tape. Doing all the goals in one run was a pain, but not nearly as bad as what's coming.

They added just enough to make getting off your board worthwhile, even by incorporating it as a move to be chained into combos. It improves your ability to control your skater, and now that levels are bigger and more open, it also has a significant positive impact on your ability to explore.

A couple gripes about it is that you still move like you're on a skateboard, like with everything in this game, and that trying to walk instead of run with the analog stick is a pain (but really, you should be playing Tony Hawk games with the D-pad anyway).

I wanna thank everyone who saw my last update and decided it was a good time to subscribe. That was a nice boost I got over the past week and it brings me closer to achieving my dreams. :)

This video marks the end of the THPS1 levels. THPS2 is a bit more complicated, so the objective changed to completing levels in 2 runs instead of 1. Most of the levels CAN be done in a single run, but it's far beyond my skill level to pull off the strategies needed to do that. Two runs is more reasonable while still challenging; you need to plan what objectives and icons to get for each run to make sure you give yourself enough time to do them.

THPS3 is hopefully going to be single runs again, but we'll see.

The weird thing about Roswell is there are a few gaps that feel really difficult, if not completely impossible, to pull off even with full stats. There's a code to boost your stats even higher, and it almost feels like the level was designed with those in mind instead.

The Tampa Am we're entering into actually takes place in a skatepark that you will have seen before if you played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x. One of the exclusive levels added for the game was the Tampa Am competition level, and the version in this game is almost exactly like that one. Unfortunately I can't find any good videos showing it off.

Anyway, I haven't recorded past Tampa yet. THPS3 needs different graphical settings to look right, so instead of swapping settings back and forth, I've been focusing on finishing up THPS3 before going back to THUG. I've got two levels to go, but I honestly don't know if I'll be able to work out a way to get everything in a single run for either of them.

We'll stop bailing him out (literally and figuratively) soon enough, but that won't mean we'll be free of his bullshit.

Speaking of bullshit, I've been trying to do all these old-school runs without bailing at all, but I left the one for School II in because that level was so loving hard and I was doing so good for once and didn't wanna start over again.

Edit: What makes the THPS2 levels so hard is that it simply wasn't designed to have all 10 goals doable in a single run, even though this is actually possible for every level except School II. The levels are quite large and the different goals are very spread out. THPS1's levels were much smaller and you only have 5 goals to worry about. THPS3's levels are comparable in size to THPS2, but they were clearly designed with the idea in mind that all goals could be done in a single run. Plus you don't have cash scattered everywhere to pick up (although I am getting all the stat points and decks which really makes things harder).

To get everything in one run in THPS2, you need to pull off some serious speedrun strats, have really good reflexes, and be very lucky. It wasn't reasonable for me to do the levels in a single run, so I opted to get everything in two runs, which gave me a little more breathing room, but comes with its own issues of sorting out which things to get in which runs so that I can get everything with minimal screwing around AND make sure I didn't overload a run with stuff to do.

School II is MASSIVE and everything is spread out in different paths that might also be convenient for getting other goals, but impossible for every goal. You have to do a lot of doubling-back and straying a bit from the path to get multiple goals in a single run, like you see me do here, but that all adds up and results in just not enough time. School II has no less than five different paths to start off from, each with something to collect as part of a goal.

Long story short, gently caress School II.

Also isn't the alley you briefly showed behind the club where the Goat Fucker shown in the intro video is? For those that don't know, at least from THPS4 through THAW, there's a Goat Fucker hidden somewhere in each game...that being a guy standing directly behind a goat, practically against it, being super excited. I never played past THAW so I don't know if he's still around after, but I wouldn't be shocked if he were.

I don't believe the bowl is directly involved in any goals. It's just a little spot and nothing really that special.

And yes, the alley behind the strip club is where you find this game's goat. The one in THPS4 was found in the Carnival level behind a game stand. I can't recall if there were any goats in Project 8 or Proving Ground, but I also loathed those games and didn't really spend a lot of time with them. Just beat them and moved on.

Yeah, School II is the level we picked up back in Jersey. I dunno if they count for the gap list or not, but I can show them off as bonuses once I use up all my THPS2 and 3 footage.

Someone in Discord suggested I use speedruns as a guide for these runs. I actually do (and have some great recommendations to share later on), but there are complications with that.

In speedruns, going a full two minutes might not be as efficient/fast as doing one thing, restarting, then doing another thing. For example, the School II, you might see someone get those first two cash icons that I did, and instead of continuing on and backtracking to the start, they'll restart because it's faster. I'm going for a challenge of getting everything in a single run (or two runs, in the case of THPS2) and effectively using my time to get everything, rather than straight-up speedrunning.

Things get even more difficult in THPS3. You can complete the goals in every level in a single run, but there are stat points and decks to collect in every level, which speedrunners ignore, but I am also getting in my run challenges. On top of that, THPS3 has a unique implementation where every skater will have a different combination of locations for SKATE letters, stats, and decks, and you will have a different goal depending on if your skater is vert or street. I'm using a different skater for every level, whereas they go with a single street character, which means always doing street goals, and what they feel is an ideal SKATE layout for the whole game. I tried to pick skaters whose layouts weren't terrible for each level, but as I get further into the game, my choices are much more limited and I get stuck with some extremely difficult setups, especially the last level which I was determined to do with Tony Hawk as a bookend (start with Tony in THPS1, end with Tony in THPS3).

However, watching the routes they plan and seeing how much time it takes them does inspire me to try following similar routes if I can, and gives me an idea of how much room I have to play around and add those stats and decks into the run. If a speedrunner does a level in a minute, I might think to myself "well, maybe I can do it in a minute and a half, and have 30 seconds to squeeze those other items into the run."

You will see how fine the line is between success and failure, for sure. That is, if all my footage has turned out right, which I won't know for sure until I edit it for later videos.

They all have Free Skate options to explore levels and experiment without any time limits or goals.

When the games became "open-world" style with THPS4 on, they kinda integrate Free Skate into the career mode just by their nature, but you still have an option to play Free Skate mode without any goals available. You can even play Single Session modes and try to set a high score in a level within 2 minutes, which was also available in THPS1-3.

I never knew about that "Do the trick list" exploit where you could just keep a combo going. I always thought it had to be done over the horse.

Usually, the game is just checking that the gap is in the same combo as a trick, so if you keep a combo going it will register all the tricks. This also worked in THPS4.

There are some instance where it won't work, where it's specifically checking that things are being done in a specific order with no breaks. The Wallplant-to-Manual goal from the last level cannot has to be done with a wallplant directly into a manual, instead of doing something like getting off your board and getting a running start to ride down the hill faster. I'm pretty sure all the "do the trick" missions can be done this way though, and some have to.

I've mentioned it before, but THPS and skateboarding were barely on my radar. I'm not really sure what lead me to tune in, but the first time I watched skateboarding was the day Tony landed the 900. I then continued to not watch.

About a year later, there was an article in Official PlayStation Magazine about THPS2, and it sounded like a really interesting game. Decided to rent the first one from Blockbuster to see if I'd enjoy the sequel, and I had so much fun with the first one, that after returning the rental, I went out and bought a copy to keep playing. Eventually a demo for THPS2 was released and I played the hell out of that until the full game came out.

After that I started playing a bit more attention to skateboarding too, but then stopped following after a few years. Still have all my DVDs of Tony Hawk's Gigantic Skatepark Tour, which people have kindly shared on YouTube if you ever feel inclined to binge watch some skateboarding from... almost 20 years ago gently caress I'm old.

THPS3 did not have native widescreen, but there's a widescreen patch that works with the emulator. It's not perfect though, so you might notice that sometimes the game is stretched to fit instead, usually after a cutscene transition.

A little disappointed that the Foundry recap didn't show off the unlocked room with all the free time you had left, but it's no big deal, there's nothing special in there, just a few ramps and stuff.

Will you be showing off the pointless but cool secret in Hawaii?

In retrospect, I could have used a few seconds to do some celebratory spins in the bowl, but I've been more focused on showing something resembling competent gameplay as opposed to showing the levels off and was more thrilled with finishing the level with 40 seconds left and not thinking about what else to do with that remaining time. I'd already done that a long time ago, so by revisiting these games, I wanted to do something different and hadn't thought much about exploration. That said, most levels have goals or cash/stats/decks the require going all over the levels, and the Foundry just ended up being one of the exceptions.

Meanwhile with THUG, by trying to incorporate gaps and doing every goal, I'd like to think exploration and showing levels off has a bit more focus as a result. If you're talking about the tiki statue, I need to show that in order to get the old school level, so yes that will be there. If there's something else, then I'm afraid I don't know about it.

Couple things:

I'm like two episodes away from finishing all the levels from the classic games. After that, I think I'll just have quick gap videos for the classic levels you unlock in this game, and then I'll have one or two episodes for the bonus level you unlock.

Also I'm gonna beg for subscribers again real quick because something like 80% of my views are from non-subs and last time I asked I got a nice boost, and I'm SO close to 100 and it'd just be nice thank you.
