The wife and I work with a number of rescue organisations because that is how we make ourselves feel good while consuming more than our fair share and not having kids to be selfish. Someone we know through that work reached out about a bulldog they took in as a stray who needed someone who knows how to care for them as they are terrible mutants. I am sad to say this listing has been deleted. Friends and I got a good laugh out of it, and when I went to send it to another person this morning it has vanished.

Went up to WI to visit my parents over Easter. Bunch more family surprised us and showed up for the feast. Real reason we went up there is one of Mom's dogs had puppies four weeks ago and we wanted to play with them. Spent most of the weekend in with the puppies and of course fell in love with them...so in four weeks we're driving back up to bring this little guy home. He should be ~16-18lb by that point at eight weeks old. He's the runt of the litter, born not breathing and had to be bottle fed for the first couple days but he's doing good now other than being a little smaller than the rest.

He needs a name...something auto related would be pretty cool otherwise the rest of the litter is Minnesota/Norwegian themed.

Also got the good news that wife won't be deploying thanks to essentially a clerical error.

Speaking of hiring, I've back in Vegas now, and on my 3rd job since getting here.

Things REALLY went badly in Virginia. I was actually really excited to be working in the industrial refrigeration world, as it has a lot of very cool tech and machines and stuff to work with, plus the pay on the high end can easily get up to $40-60/hr.
But holy poo poo did this company suck. Innovative was a very bad experience. They lied about just about everything.

First of all, we were told we'd be spending one week at the shop, to learn the basics and do a bit of assembly, just to be familiar with the equipment. They lied about that. After the first week, we were told we'd be finishing out the tour at the factory. Not doing any more training. Then we were told on the next tour we'd definatly be heading out. Then we were told we'd be coming back to the factory for more assembly work, mixed in with a bit of testing on electrical symbols and blueprint reading. The other guy I was training with (Who had less experience) was told when we got back he'd be shipped out with another tech as soon as he arrived. Then we were told the lack of training was due to the fact that they had just (Apperently just that week!) started a new program, because they were hiring too many guys who couldn't do poo poo in the field. Then what was the point of the like 2 hour entry test I took? And we spend 17 days straight working there, no time off.

Of the ~170hrs or so we spend on the clock, we got maybe 7 hours total of training for the thing we were hired for. And that was just in their training lab where like none of the equipment really worked. And even then we got bitched at by the shop foreman for taking too long. Sorry I want to try to learn about the thing you hired me for bro?

They also lied about the hours. Of course every place is going to tell you can get a bunch of hours, especially in the summer. But what they didn't say was that they days were MANDATORY 12 hour days. And also I was told as a tech you have the option to choose between a 10 day on/4 day off tour schedule, or a Mon-Fri regular week, occasionally having to work weekends as the season dictates. Then I was told I would have to work the 10 day schedule, no other options. And this is all traveling work too, so you don't get to go home, but rather share a room in the like the cheapest hotels they can find. And they dick you over on pay. They pay from Sat-Sun, but the tour schedule has you working from Tuesday to the next Thursday, so you only get 5 days worth of pay.

And on top of all that, just about everybody I talked to in the shop had only been there for like a few weeks or months at the most. I think I talked to like 4 guys who had been there for years. This was just one of those places where it just felt like they were just looking for a reason to fire you.

I dunno, I'm still pretty bummed out that it didn't work out. I was really looking forwards to breaking into the industrial world, but as a commercial tech, it isn't hard to find a job at all, and I really don't want to be wasting my time with a company that's going to be jerking me around all the time. I'm still kinda grappling with my decision tbh, as it feels like I'm walking away from a 6 figure career, but I dunno, it just doesn't seem worth it. The idea of being away all the time, not sleeping in your own bed, being exhausted all the time. I mean, what's the point of making all that money if you can't really enjoy it?
I don't get why you are upset about the lack of training with a bunch of junior workers, it's not like Ammonia refrigeration systems can be dangerous or anything...

good move leaving

Jesus gently caress, the past 24 hours have been beyond hosed.

Found out last week my apt complex had been sold. Okay, fine, they give me login info for their new payment system. I take off out of town to :quagmire: spend time with the gf. Log in today to pay my rent.

Wait.. why is my rent higher? Call the office. "We're raising everyone's rent to be in-line with market rent". DAFUQ? Ask them about my lease. "We don't care about your lease". Tell them fine, I'll be moving out next week. "That'll be <insane amount specified in lease>". Ask them why, since they don't care about the lease. "We only don't care about the rent portion. Everything else is in effect." I mention it's the middle of the lease, they can't do that. <click> Call back a bit later from my work phone (different area code, shows a different name on landline caller ID). Same questions, different person. Same answers. Read my lease's paragraph about rent increases to them word for word (thankfully I had it on Dropbox, so I had it handy). They said "if that's true, bring it in today and we'll fix it, but that's not in your lease, I guarantee.". Said I was out of town, asked for a manager. <click>

Called their corporate office. Every option except for one gave a repeating "This mailbox is full This mailbox is full This mailbox is full This mailbox is full This mailbox is full This mailbox is full This mailbox is full This mailbox is full :fuckoff:". Left a message in another market's mailbox. Got a call back from the "area manager" an hour later. He demanded names of the people I spoke to (which I had), asked for my apt number, pulled up my lease, stated he has no clue why they told me that and "maybe they misread your lease" (they never asked for my name or apt #). Mentioned that to him. "Guess they were too lazy" was his answer. He claimed there was a carry over unpaid balance of <amount my lease went up>, but admitted "the ledgers <former management company> gave us are beyond hosed up - do you have receipts or bank statements to show you paid? I'll make this go away if you do". Told him yes, he gave me an email address. Sent receipts. Kept asking why I was told what I was, he couldn't answer. He finally admitted he was the new property manager, not area manager (knew he was calling from the property from caller ID anyway).

Got back in town... sewage was surrounding my building. There's even condoms floating in the dookiewater, and a cleanout cap is broken off in front of my stairs. Tried calling emergency maintenance. "This number is disconnected. Thank you for calling." :fuckoff: Same message if I call the office.

The only good things that came today were plenty of sexytime before leaving Austin (how the gently caress do you middle aged guys keep up with a 40 yr old woman without half a bottle of viagra?!), dumping a lot of stuff in my new garage at the new place (seriously a lot bigger than I thought, AND has power for more than just the door opener - surprising for a detached apartment garage... GF's GarageFridge got moved in today, plenty of places to hang lighting and wire it in to the existing light socket, though I doubt the power will handle anything like a compressor), and the Saturd didn't give me any issues on the ~400 mile round trip, aside from kinda crappy mileage (30 mpg when it normally gives ~35 mpg on that trip, just confirming my suspicion that the ~200k O2 sensor is dying). GF and I both tried our cars in the garage... somehow her Matrix is shorter than the Saturd (I placed a wheel chock where my car would hit up front and still just barely clear the door by a couple of inches... she then pulled in, hit the chock, and I was able to easily walk around her car with the door closed), though the Saturd is wider. Tons of room to do anything that doesn't require an engine hoist. Pretty impressed with a garage that I expected to be barely big enough to open the car doors. Her current garage in the same complex is way, way bigger (you could park 2 cars back to back in it), but it's attached to a $1500/month 2 bedroom apartment that we really don't want to pay for (also, memories of her ex + she's been in that apt for 8 years). Her income isn't enough to qualify for the 2 bedroom on her own now that her ex is out of the picture, my credit is poo poo, and since I'm "self employed", I need 2 years of tax returns showing a pretty significant net income (when I take a shitload of deductions that bring my income far below the poverty line).

e: and now an ollllld ex is upset that I didn't call him while in town. I'm moving to Austin for a fresh start, to get away from all the drama that seems to follow me around (okay not quite rhyno levels, but I'm sick of Dallas in general, and really sick of a lot of people here)

Ok, I now have a reason to go to law school. No one has ever tried to pull this poo poo with me.

Keep at it.
You can always find some code violations and call these guys. http://www.dallascityattorney.com/cphome.html Or just leave. Lawyering up sounds like it's unnecessary for you given you've gotten what you want and as you're moving there's very little upside in looking for some kind of justice.

Of course... for $10 you can probably copy a bunch of leaflets saying things like "Leases transfer with the transfer of the property. Your current lease is still in effect. You can request a copy and Texas law requires a landlord to provide a copy of the lease within three (3) days of a tenant’s written request for a copy of the lease. Failure of a landlord to provide a copy of a lease to a tenant within the three (3) requested days will prevent a landlord from enforcing a lease. If the landlord is trying to raise your rent, you DO NOT HAVE TO PAY THE INCREASE (but you still have to pay your old rent). You should request, in writing, a copy of your lease and make sure not to pay more than you owe." then put them under everyone's doors and post them around the property.

Here's a good resource. http://www.tyla.org/tyla/assets/File/Tenants%20Rights%202014.pdf

The other links are helpful, but I'm not in Dallas proper, so the city of Dallas can't do anything (I am in Dallas county, just not the city - I'm in one of the older suburbs). Not moving until July or August either.

I've mentioned it in the city Facebook group that I'm in, and plenty of other people that live here have mentioned they pulled the same poo poo.

So, after working all morning trying to seal up a piece of nylon (crack in the used/ebay countertop dishwasher's tub I just received in the mail -- not bad but a few drops per minute) it turns out the best glue is...hot glue? That's what I read online, and it seems to be working. Just have to turn the glue gun up to the maximum temp so you kind of melt the nylon as well to get the two to bond.

Hot glue DOES have a real use.
