The Ninth Layer posted:

I've been viewing Barry as a Dexter-style sociopath, it's not that he's naive or inexperienced about relationships (although that's probably the case too), rather he just doesn't understand them at all and is just trying to imitate (or act!!) what he thinks is normal behavior.
It definitely seems like Barry lost some measure of free will and open thought from his time in the military (especially with some of his interactions with Root's character), so the idea that he's a sociopath whose lost empathy makes sense. I also really appreciate Barry trying to side with Macbeth; I mean it makes sense for some just to follow orders, right? Even if the orders are horrible and make you a monster....right?

Also every time I see Barry get surprised I can't help but picture a wacky misunderstanding about to go down...nope, Barry is a loving murder machine.

I don't get you. Barry's thespian desires are a fundamental part of the show's premise. It's not a show about a killer guy who also acts, it's a show about a killer guy who wants to act but is loving terrible at it. If you downplay the acting classes then you're making a completely different show.

My issue with it is that the acting class stuff is just not quite as interesting and funny as the Chechen mob stuff. It's just fundamentally interesting to see Barry's involvement with lurid organized crime stuff and see his skill sets put into action. It's very compelling to watch him competently plan out a raid on a drug warehouse.

Don't get me wrong, I don't entirely dislike the acting class stuff. I really like when you see Barry actually use his innate acting skills in his criminal life like when he's lying to the cops in his interrogation scenes. I just hope that they start making more connections to that side of Barry, and the stone-cold killer side of him.

Also it sounds like I'm criticizing the show more than I actually am, I really do like 'Barry'.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE DEAD, MOTHERFUCKER?

Fallen Rib
this shits hit a HR every episode except that 1.

Hey Barry its Fuchs, did you kill Taylor yet? Hey its Taylor, did you ace Fuchs yet?

My heart dropped at the end when Barry's relatively readjusted ex squadmate was in the car with the 2 whackadoos in civies instead of tac gear.

This was a great episode. I like how quickly Taylor wore out his usefulness in these last 2 episodes. He went from being a competent shooter and saving Barry's rear end, to outing himself as an impulsive idiot and getting himself and probably a couple other people killed. I kind of thought he was going to be a bit of an idiot savant, especially when he was telling Barry to kill Fuch's. "Taylor... kill Fuchs? ... I can do that?" But no, Taylor is actually as dumb as he seems lol

Also the Chechen guys in their new warehouse was hilarious. "Goran this is great physical comedy of you!".

DAIJOUBU!! ... Daijoubu ?? ?
I really like that Barry's fantasies do change with his life but also keeps escalating in being ridiculous. Oh, Sally doesn't want to be with me? That's fine, I'll still have multiple kids with teleportation and a big wall of Oscars and Emmy's....then he snaps to reality and you can just see him realizing that this isn't really feasible while he's in a lovely apartment with a delusion ex-Marine watching what I assume to be pegging porn.

Also I'm worried that they're going to try to make Winkler's character out to be a huge rear end in a top hat or something; I'd rather he just stay as this out of touch, older actor who wants to help people and get laid sometimes, but they seem to be making out all the actors in the class as shallow and selfish.

Would an acting teacher pair someone who has clearly never acted before with someone who has been there for 5~10 years???

Why would they even be in the same class together? That would probably be frustrating as hell for everyone involved...

To be honest that comparison makes me like Barry less because Patriot has a very strong game in fleshing out its whole flawed cast for comedic and dramatic effect, whereas Barry feels like a fundamentally misanthropic caricature comedy that's accidentally been performed and occasionally written like it's affectionate / sympathetic in a way that doesn't really hold together. Like when I mean misanthropic I mean the show is littered with stuff I'd think would belong more in a Todd Solondz or Burn After Reading-style amoral screwball comedy; it feels like Barry could be channeling his inner tensions into his acting but he's relentlessly terrible and his half-involvement has only endangered more people, Sally's struggles as an actor are notionally sad but she's hellbent on lashing out at anyone she can't eclipse, their potential romance could be redemptive but he's a Nice Guy projecting a banal domestic fantasy and she's not actually interested enough in other people to spot that he's a hugely damaged serial killer. The show has had enough fun with its side characters that I've held on this long, but none of the core stuff lands and I can't even tell how deliberate it is.

He's a hack trying to take advantage of the myriad of aspiring/struggling actors in LA, he'll take on/teach anyone that's willing to give him money.

Hence the scene where he himself tries to audition for a bit role in a commercial and gets nowhere.

While I agree that he's a hack teacher, I read that audition differently.

I get the sense that Gene's a character actor, if probably only a B- or C-grade one. (Think a Carlos Jacott type.) He went through a period when he was being regularly cast in things (look at the posters all over the acting studio) but he never had a breakout role and eventually stopped being cast in anything. So now he exploits his meagre experience and what little value his name has as a teacher.

I get that. The thing that's bothering me is it's completely obvious that Barry has never acted a day in his life, but it's like everyone is being forced to pretend he's just sort of bad, instead of literally The Worst Actor In The World.

I like this show but the writing feels very sloppy at times. Especially with Barry. Sometimes he's cool, calm and collected, then next episode he's some brain dead moron that's never talked to a girl before.

Eh I wouldn't call that a nitpick, it's just a thing you noticed. I feel like I get that way too easily with a new show too. Like my brain is looking for excuses not to add it to the pile.

I did debate and forensics in college and to improve my interp skills I took an Elements of Acting class, I think it was level 200. Odd number of people and me being the the newest person and the least "actor" in the class the teacher grab a TA and paired him with me. Happens the TA was a dude I knew from playing Magic: the Gathering so I was more at ease with him than some random and it worked out fine. I went from getting 5's and 6's on my Prose piece to getting a 3's (which is better) at state and regionals

Great scene, tense as hell, love how the whole thing turned as soon as Barry yelled "I TOLD YOU TO GET OUT OF THE CAR MAN" and the dude suddenly realizes what's actually about to happen.

Anyone know if season 2 is also going to be only 8 episodes?
