The people’s bank idea is dumb though. Low rates for people with equity isn’t going to improve housing affordability for those struggling to save a deposit.

I know very little about UBI but wouldn’t CPI go up and everyone’s buying power stay relatively the same?

Also your average joe would probably just take on more housing debt with that extra money so it wouldn’t be spent productively.

Thanks for that Mexico UBI link, it was interesting.

Another question - wouldn’t a traditional welfare system be better at wealth redistribution? If I’m poor does my UBI get topped up through other welfare programs or is that it?

UBI sounds cool in theory but it seems like some Redditor utopia that will never actually happen. A better welfare system sounds like a more realistic outcome to hope for although I understand our hands will be forced by automation at some point.

That said we’re doing gently caress all about climate change so we’re not going to be any better about proactively dealing with automation either.

It irks me that I can’t put Nespresso pods in the yellow wheelie bin and I cannot be hosed dropping them off at a special recycling point.

There needs to be more pressure on companies producing the packaging and not just on the consumer. I recycle as much as possible but hosed if I’m going out of my way or buying a return satchel.

FYI some industries like construction have portable long service leave. Those pesky unions..!

It’d be good if all industries had a portable LSL scheme.

https://store.steampowered.com/consumer_rights_notice/ posted:

On 24 March 2016, the Federal Court of Australia found that Valve Corporation had engaged in misleading conduct contrary to the Australian Consumer Law in representing to Australian consumers via the Steam Subscriber Agreement and Steam Refund Policy that consumers had no entitlement to a refund in any circumstances and that Valve had excluded, restricted or modified statutory guarantees of acceptable quality. A link to the Federal Court judgment appears here:

http://www.judgments.fedcourt.gov.au/judgments/Judgments/fca/single/2016/2016fca0196

When you buy video games from Valve Corporation as a consumer located in Australia, the video games come with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded, including a guarantee that the video games are of acceptable quality. You are entitled to a replacement or refund from the retail supplier of the video games for a major failure and for compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the video games repaired or replaced by the retail supplier of the video games if the video games fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. Certain other rights are available directly against manufacturers that cannot be excluded or limited.

The test for acceptable quality is whether a reasonable consumer, fully aware of the state and condition of the video games, would find them:

safe, durable and free from defects;
acceptable in appearance and finish; and
fit for all the purposes for which video games of that kind are commonly supplied. This must take into account the nature and price of the video games, and any statements on packaging or labelling.

For further information on consumer rights in Australia, visit https://www.consumerlaw.gov.au and https://www.accc.gov.au/consumerguarantees.

Each poo poo, Valve. I've submitted a refund request for DayZ, I wonder if I'll get my money back.

Valve denied my DayZ refund so I lodged an ACCC complaint. Hopefully the ACCC goes after them again soon.

There’s no harm in buying early access games when you’re legally covered by the ACL.

bigis
Jun 21, 2006
The problem with simply pointing and laughing at people signing up for unaffordable loans is that it’s gonna to gently caress us all eventually.

If we don’t protect people from themselves and the whole economy shits the bed we’ll all pay for it through higher unemployment, taxes for bailouts, etc.

People that are unironically sitting on the sidelines thinking they’re going to scoop up a bargain and have an easy time when the crash comes are dreaming.

bigis

Of course banks will always act in their own self interest and yes dumb boomers should get their comeuppance.

But when the house of cards comes down just because you don’t own property doesn’t mean you aren’t going to get indirectly hosed anyway.

Death is certain.

bigis
Jun 21, 2006

Literally nobody in this thread is excusing boomers for lovely fraudulent loans.

bigis
Jun 21, 2006
Lol if you’re defending Valve, a corporation probably making millions a day, against refunds of a $29 early access game. Who probably just take the money back from the devs.

DayZ was a garbage fire and definitely refund worthy.

The ACCC website does say:

https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees/consumer-guarantees posted:

come with undisturbed possession, so no one has a right to take the goods away or prevent you from using them

So maybe you could get a refund after being banned.

bigis
Jun 21, 2006
Just because you label a game as early access doesn’t mean it can be a broken piece of poo poo. The risk should be on the developer/retailer, not on the consumer.

bigis
Jun 21, 2006
But you’re covered by the ACL so why worry if an early access game is broken?

bigis
Jun 21, 2006
But we’ve established they are covered by consumer law.
