Oh thank god. I was fearing no one else would join me in my misery of missing out on a downtown hotel tomorrow.

Also parking lottery has started. They're requiring a credit card with each entry, my guess is they're hoping to limit shill entries. Little do they know, I'm irresponsible with money and have many credit cards.

Supposedly they go by form access time now rather than completion time. I got super lucky last year and didn't participate in hotelpocalypse so I can't say. I took forever filling out the form this year because I recently moved so I kept loving up my address so fingers crossed they really are going by access time.

Nerd HQ won't be back: https://sdccblog.com/2018/06/nerdhq-not-returning-to-san-diego-comic-con-2018-san-diego-future-uncertain/

This is a bummer. I went to Nerd HQ almost every year and loved the panels, which were a lot more intimate than the usual SDCC ones. It was a victim of its own success though; tickets for panels became real bitch to get in the later years.

I was thinking about this the other day. I feel like SDCC is leveraging their studio contracts to clamp down on the cottage industry of mini-cons popping up around it. It sucks but to a degree it's for the better. As much as you can have a good time outside con w/o having passes, CCI i'm sure would prefer you not be able to go almost a whole other con at the same time as them.

Edit: Also, checking the toy thread, it looks like Louisgod doesn't need a goon to pickup.

I know this thread doesn't see much action this year but I was thinking about it, I haven't heard much about what is actually showing up this year. I hear a lot of things about what's not gonna be there but little about what is. And when I do see things about what's going on, it's poo poo like this:

https://twitter.com/CBSTVStudios/status/1013875232321429504

6A is 1000+ person room. To put a marathon in it for a whole day seems like a waste of resources. I suspect that either a) there's a lot of people who really dig old episode of twilight zone and are willing to spend all day in a room with a lovely chair to watch old black and white episodes you can netflix or (more likely) b) CCI is severely lacking programming this year.

I'm not gonna pine for the glory of yesteryear, but I will say I'm happy I just have Sunday this year.

Edit: Ugh, I just realized it's not all day, but the point still stands, that's a huge room for this kind of thing, even if it is generally considered "after hours"

This thread stands a good shot of not making it past page 1 by the time of the show for the first time ever I think.

Is SDCC just not as exciting for everyone else or is this dead comedy forum too dead and comedy for people? I know I've been a bit in the whatever club this year since I only have Sunday but even last year the shine was pretty much gone on the whole show. But I'm looking at stuff being planned and offsites and such and it's just like "meh" all over.

Maybe it's just finding out everyone's favorite nerd moderator was a sex pest and a whole bunch of other famous 'nerd' celebs are enablers that's brought everyone else down.

Losing the hypetrain from Marvel et al is kind of helpful since you won't have to worry about 9000 Whovians camping out for 8 days.
The slow ramping down of offsites also hurts since sometimes you want to just walk around a giant CN bouncehouse or visit a Hello Kitty festival or whatever other random party things are going on in the breweries.

But yeah, it's hard to get interested for something that is just a series of lotteries and gatekeeping actions built on a shoddy ground.
Maybe it'll start collapsing in on itself and being more feasible in a few years.

The lotteries and gatekeeping is what're wearing at me at this point too. It's stops being a fun event when your entire year revolves around submitting lottery entries and stressing about whether you'll win said lottery or not.

And it didn't used to be all lotteries. They just slowly started implementing it for everything. Hell, they've basically implemented it twice for hotels at this point (once to fill out the form and then again after you submit the form). It just becomes too much anxiety for not enough pay off. Sure, it's great that now I can basically one-click my way to a chance at a WB autograph session but there's something to be said for the people who used to camp overnight for that chance (I never did but I respect the hustle).

How far ahead of time do they usually warn people about the hotel lottery? I am also going out of the country for nine days starting this weekend along with my other con-goers. This has seriously upped the anxiety level as you might guess....

They usually give like two or three days notice.

Based on previous information and "feel," I would say next Tuesday/Wednesday or the following are the most likely candidates for hotelpocalypse.

Some hotels will tack on a small fee for guests more than like 2, hence the "one person, one bed" thing. The price difference is in the neighborhood of like $20-$30/night so it's not really bad. The smart move is unless you're getting a block, just list only 2 names. The hotels won't check and I've never had an issue getting more access cards as long as we're talking a reasonable amount.

CCI has been auctioning off returned passes on ebay for like 2 months now. The first ones to go sold for like $6k which is lol but they've been steadily dropping in price since then.

They're now selling for about $1k for 2 4-day passes (no preview night) which is less than double retail and no current auctions are above $900. If you're in the market still for passes, now's a great time to pay attention to the ones available.

Studios must be starting to realize SDCC attendees aren't a good indicator of if people will go see a movie or not, most of them are just there to be starfuckers. Marvel, Paramount and New Line are the only ones with anything announced. Hall H has been forced to promote panels with THE DIRECTORS OF ENDGAME and THE WRITERS OF ENDGAME in two separate panels.

The only real saving grace for CCI this year is that Amazon's more than willing to throw good and bad money after bad and look to be painting the town with green.

Not a good start for the 50th. Maybe it's just my own impression but it feels like the convention scene is finally starting to die down.

I was there last night for Anamanaguchi and they had the merch booth open. Long and short, you're correct. They have a long sleeve T shirt, some socks, a bomber jacket and a hoodie. Maybe something more but it was pretty uninspired. They do have a Lazor Wolf tank which is cool though.

I think they were mostly hoping blind box mania would still be strong as they're pretty prominently placing a $120 backpack of mystery stuff.

I've come to the conclusion that every single last Warner/Turner property is incredibly objectively worse this year thanks to the ATT buyout.

Food tips this year. Panda Express has a pop up on 6th and J that's giving away a skewer of their new chicken that's really good, plus a drink. The line moves super fast and they don't mind you going through more than once.

The Broken Yolk also has a street taco vendor out after they close. It's a very good taco and at $3.75/per (or $4.25 for a queso taco. I recommend that queso taco) it's hard to beat.

Otherwise, Coco House is kinda rear end this year, the people they have are good but the location sucks and the people staffing are past normal amounts of standard comic con "tired of doing my job." But piece of poo poo of the year goes to Twilight Zone. experience. Do not do it. It is literally a mirror box you step into with bad acoustics and they play you the intro to the new series. There was zero give away at the end. People waited hours for it. If I was actually a fan of the new bad series, I would seriously consider changing my opinion based solely on how bad this experience is.

This year seems more than a little bad. Most of the offsites are bad. The Marvel panel was overhyped and all they did was announce poo poo that was previously announced (except Blade, that's very new and very good) and the only footage they brought for the whole 90 minute thing was a trailer for Black Widow. It seems like they took a step backwards trying to improve traffic in the exhibit hall because there are so many more places now that were just jammed up. There seemed to be huge decrease in nighttime things to do as well and what there was seems to all have been way overbooked. There's some highlights but most of it seemed to mediocre at best and for the 50th, it just seems bad.
