Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a boring movie

Wild that there's only one baseball movie in the 60's and it's a musical starring actual baseball players.

Also on that list is Major League 3. It's a bad movie, but it stars a basically unknown Walton Goggins and Kenny Johnson who would both end up as co-stars on The Shield.

Not a movie, but Ken Burns Baseball is always a good watch.

Baseball is more of a subplot, but Harold Lloyd's last silent Speedy is worth seeing if just for Babe Ruth having a small part as himself. Criterion has a lovely Blu-ray from a 4K restoration.

I ordered a couple movies from the Arrow website last weekend. Since then they have sent me two "Did you forget something?" emails about movies I looked at but didn't buy at the time.

I learned my lesson, never buying from Arrow again

“Abandoned cart” emails are a completely normal thing for e-commerce sites to do.

By itself not a big deal but Arrow's store (in the States at least) is kinda lovely anyway. Didn't they get bought by some garbage company a year or two ago? Pretty sure the guy who founded Radiance in the UK left Arrow around that time.

Yeah, Arrow got bought out by Zavvi and their QA has noticeably been going down. I also hate their web UI redesign; I liked the old UI better because you could do a better job of filtering for Blurays/UHDs and for Arrow and Third Window.

I have some notes.

This Is the Zodiac posted:

There are effectively multiple different versions of Se7en, because the color timings on the theatrical version and the versions released on home video are so different. The original version used a photochemically-finished bleach-bypass process (subsequent prints were struck from a bleach-bypassed interpositive), which was then digitally regraded for DVD. The version released on Blu-Ray, at least in the US, was aggressively color-corrected and looks way different from Fincher's version. I believe there are some non-US Blus that use either the original color timing or something like it. It'll be interesting (or possibly disappointing) to see what the 4K looks like.

Speaking of bleach bypass, did I read somewhere that a Minority Report UHD was coming? And would this be through Paramount?

The only Google result is a digital bits article that's got an exceeded bandwidth page.

Looks like Indicator has a major event happening as they added a countdown to 13 days from now.

Also, Kino Lorber's spring sale begins the end of this week. Looks like most of their 4Ks, television Blu-rays, collections, and box sets will be discounted.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Filtering was way more granular where you could filter by Bluray, Bluray/DVD combos, UHDs, boxed sets, limited editions, and you could combine that with filtering by company (Arrow, Third Window, etc).

EDIT:

Also you could choose how many search results displayed on a page or just display everything in one. The way Arrow does it now, you’ll get repeats cycling through the pages.

Don't press play
I'm on holiday in Paris so of course I went to a FNAC to see what their film selection was like - quite a good mixture of French and non-French films, though they didn't have as many non-French titles as something like a HMV would. Not much on offer either - most titles were a set €15, with newer ones being €20. I did get the 4K of The Last Duel which isn't available in the UK, and was tempted by a couple of other titles but unless they usually only come with French subtitles which was no use for films not in English.

They did have an excellent vinyl section though, but I'm not carrying a load of those back on the Eurostar.

I don't have any delusions of grandeur that I'm like, a preservationist of films or that I'm performing some sort of noble act by collecting blu rays, and I don't need any of that to justify doing it. The reason I do it is extremely simple, and it's that I just get a satisfaction from the physical act of browsing my collection, pulling a movie off the shelf, opening the case, putting in the player etc. etc. There are things in life that are satisfying just because they have a tangible, tactile quality to them and pressing a few buttons on my remote control to dial up something to stream doesn't provide that.

For me it's never really been more complicated than that and it probably never will be.

Much like vinyl I like have to pick out a physical item and sitting down to experience it. Just makes it easier for me to not get distracted for some reason or another. Plus unless I pirate something the streaming quality is just worse or it's not available streaming anyway.

I just like the tangible quality of having a physical collection. It looks cool, plus tracking down the things I want to add to it is an extra little bit of a hobby, since about 90% of my collection is second-hand because I enjoy bargain hunting. Crate-digging boxes of old DVDs at yard sales, second-hand stores, pawn shops etc is one of life's little joys for me.

I'm pretty sure it's actually in the film. From what I've heard, the Director's Cut makes the film shorter, and some of the Devo scenes were cut out, but I can't find anything definitive.

I did find this quote from Mark Mothersbaugh though that made me laugh.

quote:

“We were kind of repulsed by the whole experience,” said Mothersbaugh. “I thought Dennis Hopper was retarded when we met. He couldn’t say his lines. He couldn’t speak a sentence. He just ignored every direction he got. He was a short-order cook in the movie and he was playing with a knife and he ended up cutting Sally Kirkland really bad. She ended up suing Neil Young.”
