CPL593H posted:I was about to say that I've never run into this problem but then I saw your post and it makes sense now. Most movies I own are from these or similar publishers. I found that the quickest way to get around this sorta poo poo is to disconnect the device from the internet. Any BDLive enabled disc that I put in my PS4, I make sure I disconnect entirely before booting and it's just the (skippable) trailers and disclaimers, usually. Some get around that mrgod, though. A current trend among Australian films is a 2 minute, volume boosted, unskippable vignette that's a bunch of local actors and industry saying "thank you for supporting local films!" with obnoxious backing music. It's killing me.

Oh man my first DVD that I watched/bought was the Futurama Season 1 boxset, which I wore out rewatching again and again and again. They lasted for a good decade or so before they gave up, though. I just bought the Umbrella Entertainment version of Suspiria (the AUD has tanked and makes importing the Synapse/any overseas version prohibitively expensive), but I can't find out any information which transfer they're using out the million and a half 4K restorations that have come out over the last year. DVDBeaver says that the TLE transfer is used for overseas/Region B releases but it doesn't seem that dark?

LORD OF BOOTY posted:My first time seeing Hard Boiled was on a sketchy R0 DVD that Blockbuster had mixed in with the other foreign films, in about 2006-2007ish. They also had End of Evangelion at the same Blockbuster as late as 09 (in the loving kids movie section, for some ungodly reason, but still). Blockbuster putting hosed up adult animated films in the kids section because "cartoons are kids stuff, right?" is a universal thing. That's how I first saw Watership Down as a kid.

I know there's a few other Australians floating around in the thread, so I figured I'd post this Amazon AU hack: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/377533 Managed to swing the Nightmare on Elm Street boxset, the Rocky boxset, Scorsese's 3 hour George Harrison doco, and ozploitation classic Long Weekend (so 15 movies) for $45AU. There's also a shitload of UHD stuff in there, and someone on the Ozbargain site managed to get Nolan's 4K filmography for $39 total.

EL BROMANCE posted:Ha nice, Body Melt. Never gotten around to it, but it’s well known for starring soap actor ‘Harold from Neighbours’ which is enough to sell any Brit/Ozzie. New transfer from the negative according to VS too. Not sure what the existing Umbrella blu uses, but knowing VS's quality it'll probably be a step up. Looking at Star Time and Sweet Sweet back's in the sale, and depending whether the secret titles pique my interest or not, Pigs and Christmas Evil. It kicks off at 2pm local time for me, so I'm pretty #blessed

VS sale is live. Secret titles are Deadly Daphne's Revenge and Pets. Pulled the trigger on Deadly Daphne's Revenge, because it sounds rad (it also isn't being re-released after this run) but Pets doesn't interest me at all. Also snagged Sweet Sweetback's, Dolemite, Christmas Evil, and Star Time. edit: I also think I was the first purchase of the sale because the site didn't collapse in a flaming wreck like it has with all the other sales. Digging through my local pawn shop that has a surprisingly large collection of blu-rays, I picked up a copy of JCVD - one of the pull quotes on the back is just "A better film than The Wrestler" which is a) hilariously petty and b) untrue, sorry. Kinda psyched for It Happened Here, too.

Cemetry Gator posted:I thought the 2011 master is the only master for Jurassic Park in 2D on bluray. So the comparison is already kind of screwy. Pretty sure there was something about the 2D disc of the 3D re-release having a new master. 88 Films has announced Simon Wincer's Harlequin for later this year, and are releasing Body Melt (as are Vinegar Syndrome). Body Melt has a new transfer according to VS, and apparently Umbrella in Australia has a new edition coming out around the same time (only a year and a bit after the last release...) but no word on a new transfer.

Boywhiz88 posted:Would not disagree. A local theater has been doing a Verhoeven month for July. Total Recall, Showgirls, RoboCop, Basic Instinct, and Starship Troopers. Never saw Showgirls or Basic Instinct before. Showgirls was insane, and Basic Instinct is next week. It’s been a good month. Basic Instinct is above average neonoir with terrible sexual politics (even for the early 90s). Also a reminder that besides being a great film-maker, Verhoeven's a great addition to any commentary track, especially paired with Arnie.

It's taken me forever but I finally sat down and powered through Flicker Alley's collection of American Avant-garde and Experimental films. wa27 posted:All the classic CBS TV blu ray releases are like that, I think. Star Trek is the same way. It's a shame because they're great sets for very cheap prices. And it's not like they cheaped out on the packaging, it's just poor design. There were a couple of seasons of The Simpsons that had the discs slide in and out of a concertina cardboard sleeve. It was fantastic at scuffing DVDs right out of a brand new box.

For hard to categorize movies I use a “cult” films genre that has stuff like my Arrow movies or Tarantinos or Hobo With Shotguns, and I also group my criterion’s together. I keep all my "boutique" label stuff together on a separate shelf, which has led to Ice Cream Man next to Ikiru and that's the way I like it

Xenomrph posted:Sounds like it’s time for a house. Looking at the Italian Amazon page here it says it has English audio but no subtitles. It might be that only the 4K UHD disc is region free (because there isn't any region encoding on those?) so the blu-ray edition might be locked; similarly, only the European cut has a 4K remaster, so on the UHD edition only 1 out of 6 discs is a UHD and therefore completely guaranteed to be region free (and the back of the box image on Amazon says UHD is Region ABC, Blu is Region B). Reading the blu-ray.com forums makes it seem like a bit of a clusterfuck, though, with some relatively recent purchases still requiring to send away for replacement discs due to a framing issue, but it seems to be legit. I also assume that some prestige label is just going to bite the bullet and pay the licensing fee at some point, so unless you really need just that one single cut in UHD it'd probably be easier to wait it out.
