I've been taking all the paper and disks out of the case, and throwing the case away. I get these sleeves from Amazon, and put them in a box (also from Amazon). I finished my DVD collection, and just kept going from there. I've long since run out of room to display all of them.

I also get these for my CD collection that I'm also breaking down, but I use them when there's more than 2 disks for a movie (good for TV shows):

My DVDs are all ripped to ISO files and on Kodi networked across my house. I don't need the DVDs anymore, and as soon as I can get enough store space, the blurays will be the same. The DVDs are also already starting to suffer disk rot, and I couldn't rip a few of them that have been in the cases for years prior to that.

I did something like this back in the day (but smaller drives, like 2GB). But now I just have a Synology NAS with four 4 TB drives in it. The other benefit is that it runs the SQL server for Kodi, and my transmission torrents, Sonarr, etc. So not only do these things have the storage space, but they're great accessory machines. I also run my home automation out of it, so I'm not just locked into Nest's/Ikea's/Philip's products. They're really versatile on top of all the storage.

The Best Buy drives used to have WD Reds inside them which were easy to shuck (take apart and remove the bare drive) which are ideal for NAS and a good chunk cheaper than buying the drive on its own. An absolute win. They’re now usually Whites and seem good enough still. I just run them in their enclosures for now, but a future 4x 8TB NAS is tempting.

Good to know. I'm not hitting the limit of my space yet, but I haven't ripped my blurays yet either. (My wifi probably couldn't handle that, and I need to upgrade that first before I even consider it).

Please post examples of your "disc rot" and also what region? Disc rot is a big boogy man in the CD collecting community but it's mostly a myth because it only affects certain pressings and labels, mostly in the UK iirc.

Sorry, I was looking through the stuff this weekend. Unfortunately I don't have anything I can photograph really. They weren't scratched, but I tried one of those disk doctor things to try to buff them regardless (maybe taking away anything you could see (and then I threw the thing out because it's useless)). But my older disks such as Simpsons season 1 & 2, Sherk 1, cannot be read anymore. When I started ripping them to ISO, they lived in their cases, and on my shelves. I only put them in sleeves well after I had everything on Kodi.

EDIT: I'm region A.

That was one of my first DVDs too, I loved that set and probably watched the 9 episodes like ten times each. That show is better than anything Smith has been involved with since.

Best part of the Clerks cartoon is that they did a clip show episode as like the third or fourth episode of the series, as a joke, but then the network aired that episode out of order so the clips ended up being from episodes that hadn't even aired yet.

It was just six episodes, and the clip show was the second episode. So it only had clips of the episode from before it, and made up stuff. That show was much better than the films (not a high bar, but still).

I don't know if this is the right place, but I had a question about digital movies. Typically I buy only movies in 4K and they come with a digital code. Does the matter where I register this digital code? From my understanding there are certain websites will not give you the 4K steaming copy and only a 1080p streaming copy. I have about 90% of my codes registered on moviesanywhere.com, but are they a 4K copy? Or should I register on different websites to ensure I get the 4K copy.

Apple upgraded anyone's collection to 4k when they announced the Apple TV 4k. However, they also work with Movies Anywhere. So if you link them, they'll show their movies on any other Movies Anywhere service.

For me, it’s definitely a streaming vs owning thing. I don’t want my choice of movies to be beholden to a given app’s catalog selection or whether or not my internet connection is cooperating that day. And since the cost of buying a film from iTunes or some other app is only marginally less than just buying a physical disc, there’s little point to building a digital library (and most big studio releases include a digital code now anyway).

The only real downside is finding enough shelf space for 1000+ titles

With blurays you can fold right along the spine where a crease is already, and have the side show right on front. DVDs you do have to fold in the middle of the spine however. I reduced my entire DVD and bluray collection to about 7 boxes, because I was sick of looking at them all the time in my living room.

I've worked in Target and Bestbuy (for a holiday season) years ago. They do annual audits to try to keep the numbers right where they have an outside company count everything in the store, including stuff not on sale. If you've ever been in a store and you see white tags on a rack, that's what those are for. Most inaccuracies are because of theft. If it was stolen and they didn't catch it, they have no way of knowing that they now have 5 copies of a film instead of 6.

Yeah, but the rule of it is that you have to buy 5 movies at regular price in order to have your account "fulfilled". Then you get the VIP deals. But if you buy Marvel, Star Wars, etc films on the day they come out (and can deal with some extra time to ship), you were going to buy them at full price anyways.

If you want to join, I have a referral link that will give me two free movies when you do:

I also pair this with the Disney Movie rewards. They're the points you get in your disks that get you Disney merch, and even more blurays. I spent one snowy winter day going through all my Disney/Pixar/Marvel films and gathering codes, and I got over $60 worth of free merch shipped to me.
