When I was married, my ex never let me watch horror movies (so I'd have to do it during times she was on vacation on her own, or out with friends, or whatever), but this October I'm doing a movie a day, including some stuff I've never seen, like Trick'r'Treat. You're in for some fun. Trick r treat is one of my favorite horror anthologies ever.

And honestly 4k is probably the best resolution we need for home purposes anyway. What we do need is better encoding and scanning.

Maybe bit late but here's how I do it for my collection. Every single video game I buy now is digital. Xbox, Nintendo, Sony. Even if a game is delisted from a store, you can still re-download it and consoles can be kept offline. Yet I still buy physical movies. It's usually cheaper than buying digital, you never have to worry about the storefront and you can lend it out or take it to friends. Also the bit rate of a blu ray or especially a 4k disc is so much better than the HD download. Pretty sure there's a ton of people that also buy just digital songs or streaming as well. But there's no movie or TV streaming service that's as comprehensive as Spotify. So yes, physical still always wins for movies and TV shows and I don't see that changing for a long while.

I think it's just economy of scale starting to be good for 4k/large screens. Its probably stupid expensive to get a crt TV made nowadays and we have cheap Chinese 4k 60 inch screens for $400 in some places.

One of the reasons I enjoy the bond films is that so many of them capture the era and culture in the times when they were released. If you step back and enjoy them as a relic from the past, they're pretty enjoyable.

# ¿ Mar 18, 2019 19:38 |

Yes exactly. There are movies that are timeless and can be enjoyed by many regardless of the year you watch them in. I will always insist that James Bond movies are a direct result of their time and culture and that can make some movies feel wildly different in terms of experience. Like how the early Craig bond movies feel more like Jason Bourne movies because that's just what was really popular for the times. If I remember right, one of the Brosnan bond films feels a bit similar to True Lies and that was pretty close to the same era.

Unmature posted:I love that people often say Casino Royale bucks the “product of its time trend” but it has a theme by Chris Cornell, tons of parkour, and an important set piece takes place at a Body Worlds exhibit. Yeah it clearly has stuff that's inspired by the era its released in but you have to admit, there's a lot more slower parts (so slower like early Bond films) so it's not really nearly identical to movies released in the same years, just more inspired by those movies and inspired by older bonds.

I'm selling a bunch of physical media, including a rare Grindhouse copy of Duke Mitchell's Gone With the Pope which appears to have been out of print for years. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3888830 Figure someone here must be interested in it.

I knew if I were ever going to watch them, I would have to grab them as soon as possible. I also have Miami Connection and that seems to have gone up in price. I do admit I don't think Gone with the Pope is really that great, it's more the legacy behind it, I think.

Big Mean Jerk posted:I know at least one of those instances is because Miami Connection was a Drafthouse Films release and they abruptly stopped most production not long ago. Some of their more common releases can still be found pretty cheap, but some stuff like Miami Connection and The FP go for $40+ now. Yeah it's not absurdly rare or anything but I bought my copy of Miami connection for $13. I could easily sell it and make three times that. Its abnormal since most dvds and blurays you'd buy become worthless (besides marvel and Disney which will stay above ten bucks I think. I'll probably always keep Miami connection because I think it's my favorite of the scholocky films of the 80s. Kim really tried so hard on this film.

That's why I think most good camp movies are a once a lifetime (of the director) kind of thing. Either they get better, or the movies doesn't do well enough and they don't make any more, or they become aware of their camp and try to force it. The room and Miami connection are king of camp for me. Nothing can be forced to be created like Tommy's dialog or the Tae Kwon Do song. It just... Comes into existence from their genuine earnest to make what they think is a good movie.

Isn't it common for media from the 90s to early 2000s to have archival issues just because either storage was pretty expensive back then, or it wasn't properly stored at archival quality format and of course digital was new for a lot of things. A lot of source code for games from the 90s to early 2000s doesn't exist anymore because the company didn't keep them or cleaned them out for space for their next projects.

I swear we've had this discussion before but with how streaming services keep getting fragmented, especially if there's shows/movies you like to watch over and over (like once a year or so) you're just better off grabbing the dvd/blu Ray on sale and only staying subscribed to one streaming service at a time instead of multiple. Also there's stories of people losing some movies on iTunes so not sure how much those platforms can be trusted. So physical media is cool and good.

Sometimes that enthusiasm wins you over and sometimes your reaction is “oh my god this person thought that the goofiest poo poo was cool.” It’s a thing that you can’t fake or (like Fran said) the heart of the movie isn’t there. Miami Connection is definitely one of those movies.
