The director of Drop Dead Fred also did a film called Highway To Hell that I find absolutely fascinating. It has such great production design and such a weird vibe that's a mishmash of a bunch of mythological depictions of hell. It's not gonna blow you away but it definitely stuck in my head. I should pick up the Blu-ray or DVD some time.

One more for the road - had to get New York Ninja before the standard edition sold out. Looking around, I'm glad my partner bought their copy of Psycho Cop Returns when they did. It's sold out now, and my life has been enriched by having seen it.

Stopping myself for now before I end up with a whole bunch of other stuff. This is a rabbit hole I do not have the shelf space for.

Makes perfect sense to me. Once I know the details I'll decide. I don't own any physical copy of the movie yet at all but if I'm gonna splash out for a nice looking one I want it at least to be the version I actually love.

Just made a checklist of me and my partner's favorite movies by combining my top 116 with their top 100, ending up with 159 movies. I want to collect a physical copy of every single one, either on BD/4K, DVD, or even VHS if they are unique or just cool to own on tape (for example I recently found a copy of Bound at a thrift store, and I have a Blockbuster Exclusive copy of Halloween signed by Joe Bob Briggs). It's going to get interesting to figure out what I want to do for films that never had a US release, or even ones that had no release at all. I may consider importing the Japanese BD for Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney movie, but for It's Such A Beautiful Day...guess I'll have to fire up Photoshop or something. It's also crazy seeing what's out-of-print - like drat I'm not paying $100 for a Zachariah BD no matter how much I like that movie.

On a related note, how long do you think it'll take for VS to start shipping out stuff to non-members from that last sale? Anyone have any experience with that?

Ha, and I'm about to watch that movie for the first time this week! Thankfully it's easy enough to find digitally but that's already bumming me out.

Dogma being so high in price because of the distribution issues sucks. It's insane that a movie I originally watched on a PSP UMD (which I still own!) is now relegated to constant YouTube uploads and creator-endorsed piracy.

I just bought the Criterion Persona set for $20 at my local thrift store. It's one of my friend's favorite movies, she'll flip when I give it to her. I've been watching the movies I got from the Criterion sale, and watched Scanners for the first time in 10-15 years. What a cool film. They should make more movies where the main character's eyes explode and they catch on fire. I liked the little special effect documentary that's in the release too, such cool ideas and minds at work.

One of the coolest things to me when watching the movie for the first time last year was how it took place in locations that don't really exist anymore. Something about the bright chrome in all the mall scenes and the part where he hacks a computer and it shows all the circuit boards and capacitors...it somehow makes it feel all the more ethereal and intense. It's a really beautiful film with a lot to say and some brilliant effects.

The fun part of building my collection has been finding out that the Bride of Re-Animator BD I bought for my friend a few months ago has jumped up to $90, and Death Race 2000 on BD is $200. I'm glad I kept my Interstella 5555 DVD from back in the day. :stare:

Some of these movies I may look into making custom steelbooks for or something, like I doubt any company is about to release a version of Miike's Ace Attorney movie.

Holy hell does the US get short-changed in the cover art department for general releases. The UK version of Network looks incredible with cool art of a fist going through a TV. The US release looks like every mid-00s action movie for some reason, not at all indicative of the film. Gross.

What are movies you'd like to see get Criterion releases? I have a few dream releases, some more likely than others.

Number one would be Network. I'm amazed it hasn't happened yet. 12 Angry Men is incredible of course but I figure a whole Sidney Lumet collection would be awesome, with Network being one of my personal favorites of his. Plus the existing BD cover is disgusting-looking. Awful.

Others I'd love to see are Interstella 5555 (possibly with Electroma as a bonus feature). I know that something like The Wall (or Burst City) would be more likely if they were to release a music film but I really think it's a massively interesting and influential release that never seems to get any kind of big special edition. With Daft Punk disbanded and Leiji Matsumoto's passing it'd be great to honor it.

Bound would be a big one for me too, being the Wachowskis' first film, tremendously well received, great for a History of LGBT+ cinema type release. Plus I just love it :colbert:

On that note, my personal impossible never-will-happen pick is Wild Zero, because every release I've seen of it at least in the US treats it like a joke, or a curiosity at best. It's a great piece of punk rock zero budget cinema that is also an incredible queer piece of filmmaking and I'd love to get it respectfully preserved, get interviews with Guitar Wolf for the special features, talk about the punk scene in Japan in the 90s. It'd be great.

Lastly, a Satoshi Kon collection would be magnificent, but if I had to pick one it'd probably be Paprika. It's not my favorite of his films, but it's a gorgeous one and his most mainstream pick. But all of his movies would be incredible additions to the collection.

I have a few others - Swiss Army Man, Oldboy, and another physical of It's Such A Beautiful Day since they only have the movie on their app possibly due to the existing Blu-Ray release - but I think these are big wants.

More animation in general would be nice. Wild Zero is fantastic. It is a very goof movie but back in the day having the mentor character just yell this at our hero was a pretty big deal for me.

It was so powerful, I've watched this movie four or five times since my initial viewing in 2021 and that scene and the entire second half of the movie never fails to get an extreme reaction out of me and everyone I've shown it to. Part of the fun of the movie is that it's wacky and wild, sure, and it is hilarious schlock at times, but it's also so earnest. If Pink Flamingos and Multiple Maniacs can get releases that balance reverence and irreverence, so can this. :colbert:

On things I like to shill that not enough people see: every Lupin the Third movie. Discotek is releasing them lately. It's thief comedy meets James Bond meets anime nirvana. Potent stuff.

The Castle of Cagliostro is one of the best animated films of all time for my money - and major names at Disney and Pixar agreed. If you want a great lesser-known one I recommend The Mystery of Mamo. It's not a perfect film but the ending sequence is breathtaking and an all-timer series moment.

And if you like those and want a great series to sink your teeth into, Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine has a gorgeous art style and a killer dark tone and I adore the ending. Sayo Yamamoto crushed it as director.

Even the newest film, the CG-animated film The First, is excellent, with a great mix of the action from Part 2 and lots of Cagliostro influence leading into a bonkers finale. The gang translates perfectly into CG and it's a great pulp story.

For much less of a total longshot my answer would be King of Comedy. Seeing as Criterion has already released a few Scorsese films and After Hours is on the way soon this one is actually within the realm of possibility. Cronenberg's version of the Fly would also be great. The Blues Brothers is another. Performance. The Wall. Blacula.

The Fly would be incredible! Right now I have my eye on a Japanese BD that is region 1 and still includes the full English version unsubbed. The Wall is one of those I'm surprised hasn't been done yet. Blacula is a great cut, too.

If this helps them get out of trouble with folks on the main site while upping their sexploitation output I'm all for it. Glad they're not just throwing their hands up and phasing it out entirely. If anything maybe this means they can do some that wouldn't otherwise get a VS release - I nearly sent them a suggestion to do 2016 movie Antiporno because while it's a erotic exploitation movie it's also an excellent horror film I'd love to have in my collection. I otherwise don't have any interest in their sex category but the inclusion of order stacking is great for those who do. Seems very pro-consumer while covering their asses.
