A movie I've been waiting for finally went on preorder. It's a super limited release, they're only doing 200 blurays... and 50 VHS tapes. Is that a thing? Are there VHS nerds now?

Spatulater bro! posted:Yep I have both the ED and ED2 Book of the Dead editions, bought back in 2002 and 2005 respectively. And they're totally destroyed despite being stored and handled with the utmost of care (as I do with all of my movies). The latex has completely dried out. Everytime I pick it up a big chunk of it falls off. It's like handling bone dry leaves. I remember some DVD that had fake blood in a plastic pouch on the cover. I wonder that those look like now.

After decades of waiting we finally get a bug budget Lord of the Rings adaptation, and it's completely pointless because it doesn't include Tom Bombadil.

They should announce the release, ideally some anticipated movie, but just before preorders open say a rights issue has come up and they have to delay release to get things sorted. And then never mention it again

CPL593H posted:If you mean the movie with the people from The State/Wet Hot American Summer it's probably because the movie flew very far under the radar. I've also heard that it's not that funny. Plus it's older than 2011. Tapes were definitely not still being produced in 2011 unless it was some kind of niche novelty release like House of the Devil or some poo poo sold by Mondo. Oh that's weird, Amazon listed it as 2011. I guess that's the DVD printing. But still, 2007 seems pretty late for a VHS and no bluray. Also, of course that's the movie I mean. And you heard wrong.

I preordered Howl From Beyond The Fog the second it was available, I had been waiting to see that movie for so long. It shipped in November, and immediately entered post office hell. In January SRS Cinema very kindly emails everyone who didn't get their copy offering to send them a new one for free, if the original shows up just ship it back. But I wanna hold off, I don't want them to be out copies, there were stories of tracking not being updated but people getting their copies anyway. So I wait another month and then finally say, yes please send me a new copy. Which they promptly do! It's on it's way! And according to tracking, my new copy of Howl From Beyond The Fog's arrived in Dallas last weekend. All of this is to say, I wonder what series of national disasters will occur to prevent me from receiving my copy of Monster Seafood Wars https://twitter.com/COBRAcollector/status/1362220983239782401?s=20

Is Unearthed Films legit? They have A Record of Sweet Murder on bluray, and after watchin Occult, Noroi, and Cult I am more than willing to blind buy any Koji Shiraishi movie but looking at the Unearthed Films website makes me worry that they're shady or if I buy something from them I'll end up on a list.

Roth posted:Welcome to the prestige of boutique home video releases. Yeah it kinda sucks. Like, it's great that these movies are getting such high quality releases, but the boutique prices make them much more niche. I remember being a teenager back in the day, going to Suncoast and buying just weird poo poo because it looked weird and I had 20 bucks to spend. That is how I got into Japanese movies in the first place, buying a copy of Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl because it kinda looked like Reservoir Dogs, and being like holy poo poo who is this "Tadanobu Asano" guy, and then buying anything with him in it, and from that getting into Takashi Miike and then Ryuhei Kitamura and Takeshi Kitano and so on. And that was only possible because the movies were cheap! If they had all been 40 dollars with artbooks and chipboard boxes, I never would've seen so many great movies. I get why they're doing it, streaming is eating the world and people buying physical media is a shrinking market, so you need to get more money out of fewer people. And it also ties in to the death of movie retail, places like Suncoast don't exist so people can't browse shelves, so building up a brand and targeting consumers who follow Arrow Videos releases is necessary and also breeds a certain type of consumer base, etc. etc. But it still kinda sucks.

Hirsute posted:I like watching movies with commentary tracks if they have them, but I'm kind of annoyed when some films in a series have commentaries and others don't. Most recently noticed this with the John Wick movies, the first 2 have commentaries but the 3rd one doesn't even though Chad Stahelski directed all 3 and Keanu Reeves starred in all 3. Why wouldn't they just record a commentary? Doesn't seem like that much extra work. Probably it was an issue of both of them finding a time in their schedules to meet up and do it before the home video release.

Detective No. 27 posted:I really hope there was a late 80s/90s culture of Japanese people recording and distributing VHS fansubs of Columbo. They didn't need to, it aired on Japanese TV dubbed in Japanese. And if they missed it on TV they could simply buy the novelizations of popular episodes, which were only available in Japan. Or get the show on Laserdisc, which was also only available in Japan. Japan loves Columbo.

Are we just talking about companies that use the special clear thick bluray cases, or boutique physical media producers in general? If the latter I want to shout out SRS Cinema, who do nice releases with new cover art and posters of low budget kaiju movies and micro-budget shot on video garbage.
