Oddly enough, I did DVD authoring for a little school and the saddest thing was making a decent looking menu that got resolution-squashed in the final version, or loving up the pathing for NEXT BACK HOME on the select a chapter screen.. RIP Adobe Encore.

First DVD I ever saw in the wild was Rush Hour, playing in a corner of Sam Goody's at CItywalk. I remember being pretty impressed at how sharp everything looked.

First DVDs I owned were Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Deep Blue Sea (both gifted to us by a family member that had one of those Columbia House things). First actual purchase? As Good as it Gets.

Eh, I'm not sure we need an HD Remaster Special Edition culture to take root in CGI films. That's been the death of creativity in this game generation.
I usually feel like early CGI films have rigging or animation shortcomings more than render issues.

Not practically now, no, since the set won't be able to take advantage of the HDr stuff and resolution.

There's an argument for getting UHD sets that have a Blu+Digital for future proofing, and maybe because the code redemption will pop the UHD version into your account.

Yeah. You can get a decent HDTV in the 55" range for less than 500, easy. Just make sure they support HDR and if you care, the ones branded as RokuTVs usually dont have an OTA digital tuner.

You'll likely have slightly less HDMI ports, and a combo port for Composite/Component. The actual HDR scheme supported probs wont be Dolby Vision on the cheaper models, and they wont be as super bright as the more pricey models. I upgraded my curved Samsung last December due to a bad backlighting panel, and the new one had HDR and a way better menu system.

I know generally how important HDR is but you're saying that the brightness would be different on a cheaper model. Like, enough of a difference that it's worth spending hundreds of dollars more?
I think anyone really concerned about that level of brightness probably will be looking at a QLED/OLED set with Dolby certification. The more expensive sets do things like SmartRemote voice/motion control, Bluetooth, Atmos, etc. DVision will probably settle in as a Premium Feature that isnt supported everywhere since there's licensing costs and whatnot.
The Dolby cert needs a minimum threshold of brightness/nits/whatevs, but I have a 2017 model Samsung and the thing is plenty loving bright for my living room. Havent noticed any lag with my game consoles either, though I did need some tweaking to get the HDR looking right the first few days. I totally would have spent $1200 to get a 75" tv, but I needed something I could pay off in a few months.

HDR is what replaced 3D as a feature, but now they're moving towards OLED/Q/XLed for richer blacks, and they quickly realized it's hard to see the benefits of HDR without a reference picture so making it a big item feature wasnt working.

How did they compare to blu-ray?
The HDdvd spec was finalized when the players went to market, so they were actually [in terms of user experience] much better than the Gen1 Blus. By contrast, i think the only Blu player on the market worth half a poo poo was the PS3 because that supported patching and was $499.99 worth of uncompromised work.

From memory:
HdDVD supported Dolby TrueHD audio (or whatever that was called). All players were capable of firmware updates through internet or usb, though I remember the players being short on memory so they ran a little slow. All discs supported pop-up menus. Overall storage capacity was less than Blus, but Dual Layer HDdvds would have solved that -- they were announced before the format died, though.

BR Players were a goddamn mess, and the discs werent much better. Menu button dropped you back to the main screen like DVDs, iirc.
