I occasionally will upgrade if it's a movie I really love, but I still own hundreds of DVDs and honestly most look perfectly fine to me. Sure a blu-ray would be better, but do I really need Ghoulies 2 in HD?

My dad bought us a DVD player in 1999 or so and the first movie I remember owning was The Matrix, which looked so awesome to me at the time. We didn't really own many movies at that point, just rented/Netflix, it wasn't until blu-ray came out that I started collecting physical media. I couldn't tell you what my first blu-ray was, possibly The Searchers or Kingdom of Heaven. Those were among the first ~10 or so I bought anyway.

I already have Night Train to Terror, Christmas Evil, Jack Frost, Nightmare Sisters, and Hobgoblins. I've heard Liquid Sky is cool, might get that

I'm admittedly spoiled in a big city, but I'd never step foot in one of the big chains these days—they're just so, so much better. Hopefully if they do close in your area, a mom and pop shop will crop up to fill the void. There are a couple used bookstores in my city, but no independent ones that sell new books. Every time I go to New York it's like being a kid in a candy store. I wouldn't buy much at B&N outside of their Criterion sales otherwise, but I shop there anyway because I dislike them less than I dislike Amazon.

The only extras I make a point of watching are Criterion ones, usually. If I have time after watching a film I sometimes go through some extras, especially if they are short, but usually after watching a 2 hour movie I don't want to sit and watch another couple hours of extra features. I just watched Return of the Living Dead III the other day and there are several 30 minute extras, who has time for that?

So I really only watch commentaries on my favorite movies that I'm already very familiar with. yeah same, I love the idea of commentary tracks but I own a shitload of movies and have probably listened to the commentaries on a handful of them. Also sometimes I'll start the commentary but if I get 15 minutes in and it's boring I'll stop and turn it off.

I have generic media shelves from Target that are fine but I'm running out of room, and I have to move everything off of them soon anyway so it's a good time to upgrade to something better/nicer.

He shot it in 1.33:1 but composed it for 1.66:1, which was his intended ratio - I guess he did that with most of his later films, the idea being that he knew a full screen/TV version was going to happen so he wanted to keep it in mind when filming.

actually I might be wrong, he intended it widescreen for theaters but according to Wikipedia - "In accordance with stipulations contained in Kubrick's will, DVD releases show the film in open matte " So, I dunno. I prefer the look of the bluray at least.
