but yeah, straight up the only real opposition to Orban (the "socialists") are more right wing on econ issues

quote:

On economic issues, the Socialists have often been greater advocates of liberal, free market policies than the conservative opposition, which has tended to favor more state interventionism in the economy through economic and price regulations, as well as through state ownership of key economic enterprises. The MSZP, in contrast, implemented a strong package of market reforms, austerity and privatization in 1995-96, called the Bokros package, when Hungary faced an economic and financial crisis. According to researchers, the elites of the Hungarian 'left' (MSZP and SZDSZ) have been differentiated from the 'right' by being more supportive of the classical neo-liberal economic policies, while the 'right' (especially extreme right) has advocated more interventionist policies. In contrast, issues like church and state and former communists show alignment along the traditional left-right spectrum.[7] It is also noteworthy that, according to research, the MSZP elite's positions used to be closer to voters of the SZDSZ than to their own.[8]

jobbik is no joke positioning itself as centrist now lol

also

the guardian posted:

Orbán, who became prominent in the late 1980s as a young liberal calling for Soviet troops to withdraw from Hungary, has morphed into a rightwing nationalist over the years.
hmm doesn't seem like much of an evolution, to me???

I will never forget the article where the Guardian lib argued that centrists should go into coalition with Jobbik, that was Peak Liberalism. Stop the neofash by working with the other neofash.

orban's been hard at work creating an oligarchy loyal to him, mostly consisting of friends and family. they're responsible for building a soccer stadium in his hometown (which has barely any people and is located literally next door to his house) and developing along the coasts of the biggest freshwater lake in eastern europe, which is a big tourist attraction. plus they love to talk about lowering income taxes. so they're all talk, no action

the socialist party is terrible, though. the entire reason orban had the mandate to amend the constitution into something that republicans would drool over is because of their neoliberal turn. also, their leader at the time had a meeting where he admitted he wasn't going to keep any of his campaign promises, and the speech leaked into the public

My Hungarian aunt keeps facebook sharing Fidesz hype videos with nationalistic songs blaring in the background. She's a teacher and constantly vouches for remembering and appreciating Hungarian literature and poetry (she got me into Krasznahorkai and Kertesz), but the way it slips into her politics is gross. Nationalism from a distance is.....odd to watch.

I've said this before but I know a lot of Hungarians who are fiercely into 'being' Hungarian in ways you don't see people hold North American identities, and I've seen them be that way since the 90's and 2000's pre-Orban takeover. I don't know what to do about it, but it's not very surprising that the nationalism went poisonous and fascist because that seems to be the endpoint of any nationalism.
