My Hungarian aunt keeps facebook sharing Fidesz hype videos with nationalistic songs blaring in the background. She's a teacher and constantly vouches for remembering and appreciating Hungarian literature and poetry (she got me into Krasznahorkai and Kertesz), but the way it slips into her politics is gross. Nationalism from a distance is.....odd to watch. I've said this before but I know a lot of Hungarians who are fiercely into 'being' Hungarian in ways you don't see people hold North American identities, and I've seen them be that way since the 90's and 2000's pre-Orban takeover. I don't know what to do about it, but it's not very surprising that the nationalism went poisonous and fascist because that seems to be the endpoint of any nationalism.
