episode is now up on CR also yeah bears/dogs/horses always look jacked up in anime, I dunno if I'd rather have cg bears or wonky hosed up drawn ones but will revisit after watching the ep

Ok now that I've seen it, I think the cg drama is a big overreaction. They just need to work on making the cg stuff blend better with the rest of the animation. I thought Retar looked fine and he's cg too, but since he had an outline it wasn't as jarring as the bear.

there are enough bears in the story I hope they do work on it and also don't end up with more weirdly out of place animals but I can appreciate wanting to err on the side of realism and not make a dopey drawn bear that looks like a giant raccoon or something

I honestly don't think I've ever seen an anime horse I thought looked right, and have seen way more hosed up dogs than normal-looking ones. I really don't have a lot of faith that a hand-drawn bear wouldn't look just as jank as the cg bear only in different ways  anyway the bad bear meme is getting old so how about let's table it for now and see if things improve in the next episode.

I think it's also definitely suffering the comparison to the manga which has so much charm. If this was original material people probably would be less critical (though the bears would still probably be getting poo poo on) since it otherwise looks decent, but blanding-out considering the source is a pretty big flaw.

Still working on S1 watch; I was kinda glad that the bit where the guy gets his face wiped off by the bear was mostly offscreen, I'd forgotten about that but it was rough in the manga. e: although that did leave it mostly up to my imagination and remembering that scene so that was possibly worse :x
