Anyone want to buy something dumb and fun, yet incredibly utilitarian?

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/st-albert/2015-f-150-xtr/1645147454

It has the payload package, so it's perfect for a slide in camper :heysexy:

Edit: The plan is to buy something truly stupid to replace it with the proceeds.

One week in and zero bites (except for the usual onslaught of scammers), so I put some additional effort into the ad and rewrote it.

And since I'm just so drat excited, I'll share what I have in mind to replace it.

A Porsche 957 Cayenne Turbo S. It will make an excellent tow pig sitting on Yokohama Geolander All Terrains.

One last tow with the old one.

First tow with the new one.

Since this 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S has neither epitrochoids nor suicide doors, it won't be a regular feature in this thread.

Major turbo developments have been paused in order to take part in a few Auto X events.

Thursday's course will be the Master Blaster.

Edit: Oh, a more appropriate shift knob has found it's home in the RX-8.

I have that same knob on my '79 RX-7. Well, *had*, since the shifter and the transmission are in two locations separate from the car, currently.

Auto-X was a resounding success. It has been 10+ years since the last one. :smith:

I did not grenade the engine.
I did not kill any cones (Did miss a gate on the very first run though.)
Did not finish last.
Consistently improved on times run after run.

There was a really good spread of vehicles and driver skill present.

I wasn't even the loudest vehicle there and yes, I was in the slow class. As I should be. I drive like a grandpa.

Now to start playing around with the datalogs thanks to the new Banks Power DataMonster.

Edit: There were a couple photographers in attendance. So I didn't really take any pictures. Once the pros toss theirs up I'll link them.

Mr Banks offers a free web based data analysis tool.
https://datalogviewer.com/

It's simple and easy enough to use.

This was from the second stint of the day. Two runs only unfortunately due to the noise bylaw forcing the track to shut down at 2100.

My EGT's are a little bit to high. Going to have to mess with fueling and ignition timing.

I also really need to get my own grafana dashboard built to automate a bunch of this.

Pure water injection, no. 50/50 water/meth or higher meth concentrations, absolutely.

Pre-ignition is what kills rotaries in general and EGTs are what kill renesis.

So the higher manifold density and higher effective octane would let me play with the timing and fuelling to get lower exhaust temperatures without sacrificing any power and also drastically reduce the chance of pre-ignition.

It is absolutely on the to do list once the turbo is installed. With the stock compression ratio, it will have to be at the same time as the turbo really.

Also, pictures have been posted and I was mentioned by name :buddy:
For completely missing the second gate of my very first run.

I mistakenly trusted the 4 year old battery in the GoPro to hold a charge. It did not. So no video.

This time.

I'm going to use my phone mounted to the dash in conjunction with the HP Tuners Track Addict app for Stratocross #5 August 3.

Professional pictures of the event have now been posted as well.

https://theflyingpenguin.ca/2023/07/23/stratocross-round-4/

Going over the datalogs from round 4, I was still running to lean for my liking so I spent quite a few hours redoing almost every cell in the tunes fueling tables. Hopefully that helps things.
My coolant temps were also getting a little too high as well. The stock water pump is known to cavitate at high rpm (WTF Mazda, it's a rotary. They all rev high.), so that is next on the list to replace.
There is an off the shelf solution.
https://mazmartstore.mybigcommerce.com/re-medy-high-flow-water-pump-for-rx-8-2004-2008/
So I'll be ordering that in the coming weeks.

Drove it to work today to try and get some km on the tune revision.

Initial datalogs seem to indicate that I was able to get the EGTs down by about 10C across the board.

Had there been no AutoX season this year I would have had the engine bay ripped apart for this:

That will depend on whether I add a Subaru style anti-lag.

The last Auto-X of the season was on August 17.

I tried playing around with HP Tuners Track Addict.

It has limitations but for quick comparisons between runs, it is very useful.
Best lateral G's were 1.2, which for 400tw all seasons isn't bad.

Shame that there is no desktop app to accompany it. It does let you export all of the data to .vbo which can be used by a bunch of dedicated motorsport analysis applications, so that should be a fun smaller winter project. Or I finally spend the time and spin up a dedicated grafana dashboard. I really should do that.

The local photographer grabbed another great shot of me on the second last run of the evening.

https://theflyingpenguin.ca/2023/08/23/stratocross-round-6/

I was able to continue my trend of gradual improvement run after run. Still did not podium in my class though. However, due to consistency and the rule of first place getting kicked out of the slow class each event, I did manage to score first in points in my class for the season as a whole. Which also means that I will be bumped to the tuner class next year.

And now, back to the project shenanigans of this thread. Starting with re-arranging the entire engine bay.

Edit: Forgot the link to the photo album from the flying penguin.

I wish I had the room to keep a spare chassis. I don't even have the room for a spare (assembled) engine.

Right, so updates. The AutoX season is now officially over and apparently there are "trophies".

The "other" project car is now at a reasonably stable plateau so I can once again focus on the fun one.

Step one. Battery relocation. It had to move to the trunk because I need that space for the ECU and power steering computer. Yeah. Let the fun begin.

It's all in jest.

Remember the whole impulse control thing in conjunction with browsing FBM?
Not only do I now have a formula Mazda DCOE 6 port intake manifold, I am now also the owner of a used set of series 6 RX-7 rotors.

I think it's time to start planning on dropping off all of my RX-7 engine parts for dry ice blasting in preparation for building a truly Frankenstein engine.

Oh, my Mazdamart RE-Medy water pump for the RX-8 has finally arrived. No more cavitation at high rpm during AutoX runs next year.

Edit: The memes write themselves.

In true ADHD coping mechanism fashion, I am procrastinating on one project with another.

My birthday present to myself this year is a mini-me of the RX-8.

The chassis is a Tamiya TT-02 with a few of the factory hop-up parts. A "welded" rear diff and 1-way front diff. I still have to grind down the steering bump stops for more steering angle.

The body is from D-Like Japan. Not done trimming and sanding yet. Just ran out of time. I need to figure out which paint would match Mazda's brilliant black the best. I should also dig out the remaining vinyl to cut the 1:10 scale livery.

My brother dropped off a belated Xmas present.

It's huuuuuuge ( DIN A1 I think?) and I definitely have to get it professionally framed.

I finally started work on the real project car again.
Breaker is mounted to the battery box.

Now to figure out how exactly I can mount the box to the car.

I'm thinking two rivnuts into the body left and right of the shock tower and then a U-shaped bracket connecting them for the box to mount to.

Edit: I could also put in a rear strut bar and then bolt the battery box to that. Hmmmmmm.
