Alternatively, this might be good for Mourinho, breaking his usual cycle. It's time for him to show he either has or can develop the adaptability that other great managers have demonstrated in the past.

Well, here's hoping. Maybe I'm just being too pessimistic but the rants, players thrown under the bus, players seeming increasingly stressed out / unhappy on the pitch just makes me thing of a end state Mourinho team, albeit this time one that didn't end up getting the benefit of it all because someone else had a freak season at the same time.

But yes, if he can grow and adapt that'll be huge. I would say him doing that is pretty much a requirement for his future at United, but we'll see.

Pep: spends 1.1bazillion dollars, entire squad is collegial and unified, wins league

Jose: spends 1.0bazillion dollars, entire squad is on edge and there's tons of palace intrigue, finishes 16 points off the pace

If you're not striving to improve, you'll end up going backwards.

Honestly, if the roles were swapped and Mourinho was at City with Pep's resources, and Pep was at United with Mourinho's resources, does anyone think Mourinho's City would've won the league with a 16 point gap? Because I don't, not for a moment.

Pep doesn't have a perfect record or anything, but he's made some very good signings and more importantly managed to gel his team together really well.

Maybe not with a 16 point gap, but they still would have won the league. City’s squad is much better than United’s

Mou would’ve managed to make them look bad, and probably sold off De Bruyne again.

While I'm still reluctant to embrace the technical philosophy of pepball, he's definitely won me over with his coaching style. Any competent manager could take the players we've got and win the league using whatever tactics they like, but the way already good players have been willing to improve and change their game for their manager is the reason there's such a big margin. Jose, on the other hand, has always been dressing room cancer and his tactics aren't working well enough to cover for it now because the game has moved on.

Pretty standard ball in, defender gets sucked in and misses it, falls out to Moses who beats Pope near post.

Draws aren't going to be enough for Southampton

What has Southampton's predicament got to do with Chelsea beating 7th placed Burnley?
