Make a suit out of hollowed out TV's and hide in your tech dumpster. Then when he gets there whip the poo poo out of him with a extension cord. Say something corny like "Crime scenes are the one thing you shouldn't recycle!"

I get paid per ton and not the value of the items so I happily toss 300lb trinitrons in there The smash Bros thread will have an autistic conniption if they hear you're throwing out Sony tube tvs.

OP you have yet to give solid justification for being mad about trash thievery other than "I was gonna fix that trash and sell it for a markup". Do people know that is how your business makes most of its money, by indirectly swindling them? Kinda like a food bank/pantry running a restaurant using donated food.

Anyone is more than welcome to take their own, old electronics, pay for the cargo container (also mentioned by the OP), and send it out for recycling. Because until then, they are trespassing and stealing. And thieves are scum, so.

A lot of places either have county dump drop off points for old electronics, or have certain days they pick up old electronics. Neither of these options require patronizing the OPs business, or purchasing a cargo container.

When the business in question misrepresents its business model and uses that misrepresentation to claim ownership of literal garbage that is left unsecured outside of the business then yes it is. If the business informs the people dropping garbage off that "hey we might fix your garbage idk lol " then it is not okay. If you put a sign in front of your house that said "please drop off garbage here" so you could go through it to find various treasures would that entitle you to the contents of that garbage simply because you put up a sign asking for garbage while not bothering to secure the precious, sacred garbage?

Goodwill, BetterWorldBooks, etc all run those kind of pickup points and aren't really charities. As a pyro nut, I say cook up a nice simple smoke bomb (saltpeter and sugar--real easy) with a fuse ignited with a model rocket igniter wired straight to the power cord. A toilet paper tube worth will do it, you could use a paper towel sized one if you feel saucy. You can pour them to any shape you want. Probably won't burn his house down, but should make him think twice about snaffling electronics from the bin.

I had an idea. Put a big box over your garbage and hold one end up with a stick. Tie a sting around the stick and when the thief goes for the garbage pull the string so the box falls down trapping him.

I'm not sure what the argument is anymore because I had to go get groceries but we are the official drop-off point for our area. The shipping container is supplied to us and the transportation of it is provided by the province and we are responsible for the safe collection of e-waste. The guidelines provided to us tell us not to let people steal poo poo but many collection places (like me) complain that it's impossible to comply given the fact that many drop-offs occur after hours, cops don't care, etc. Items we can refurbish in-house we're allowed to take as long as we take the whole unit. Also lol @ the idea of this being our main source of income - not even close.

BENGHAZI 2 posted:So why do you care if someone is going through the trash and taking poo poo you don't want because stealing is a crime I guess. For years we've been doing this and I didn't care about theft much because I knew it was gonna happen. now it's a real pain in the rear end. In the last two weeks pretty much anything left out overnight (or gets dropped off overnight), if it doesn't get stolen outright, gets destroyed and broken glass from tvs and rear projection mirrors gets spread out all over the ground. So I guess really when I think about it isn't the stealing that's bothering me but the vandalism. Also we are obligated to care about the trash anyway due to the agreement we signed.

Lotta votes in the arson column, I like the spicy options that shouldn't lead to criminal damage but might. Thing is with no guarantee they'll take it home you should just rig up some poo poo like that dude did with door package thieves; rig a shotgun shell to go off when they pick it up. Out of the barrel if you just want a mostly harmless noise but you do you trashmonger
