Shaggar posted:yeah. its a protectionist tax because EU companies cant compete in international markets If you're wondering where it goes it's mostly agricultural subsidies, quirky EU regional and cultural programs, research and development grants and EU administration But about half is the subsidies. One weird trick to get farmers to like you As for where the taxes normally come from it's VAT (which as an EU country you have to keep at a certain level) and custom duties

Lots of farmers still hate the EU though because they're a bunch of inbreds who don't realise literally 60% of their income comes from the EU

I remember this coming up in an EU policy course years ago, apologies for foggy details, will try to substantiate later. but aside from that the EU is not a universally good relationship for all farmers, in all nations

Fine except in some poor countries (Romania and Bulgaria) undeveloped land is cheap enough that they get paid to tun woodland into lovely managed parkland Also you get paid mostly per acre rather than for production, which pisses off people who want to do intensive farming. I personally don't mind that bit though because what's the point doing high-yield farming when you're already basically living off the public purse Crucially both of those are about the details of the subsidies rather than the subsidies themselves though

last i read in the economist (lol) 90% of farm subsidies go to mega rich agricrops with 100MM+ revenues. like apparently the prince of whales gets millions and millions of euros a year. u know it's a good subsidy if it goes mostly to rich people.

I think that's the case mainly in the UK, which doesn't have many small farmers because of historical reasons (them being driven out to cities and all the land being owned by merchants and nobility) There's still the odd farmer or two, but yeah most goes to rich fucks

The subsidy yield on agricultural land is like 10%, at least this way it would be good for the environment
