I go back and forth between liking and hating Childish Gambino's music, but This Is America is amazing. The live performance on SNL was pretty solid too. The energy was a lot different than the video. Glover's trajectory has been crazy, considering he was just a funny member of Community a few years ago. If his Lando doesn't bomb in Solo, he'll be in an amazing spot

I imagine it's pretty depressing to have so little faith people will get your message that you literally title your song "this is america" as if to gesture at it and go "HUUUH? GEDDIT?". It's already about as subtle as a brick to the head. Song is alright though, it's catchy.

I think the video is contrasting the mass indulgence in black expressions of joy with the blind eye those same masses turn toward black suffering maybe that could be an interesting thing to talk abou t .

But it also can be both. valid. what do you make of Gambino himself being the primary perpetrator of the violence? and the ending? he looks terrified, like he's being chased I was thinking lynching imagery/Gambino as the wealthy black pop star distracting from real issues but ultimately it doesn't save him from facing the same violence, but that could just be me squeezing it into the reading I was already indulging I just noticed the executed blues musician actually comes back later, bag still on his head, right as the "America... you owe me" bit segues into the refrain "get your money black man"– possible overtones of reparations mixing with resurrection imagery. interesting. but the blues musician and the gospel choir are also traditional african-american music forms, and it can't go unstated that Gambino is indulging in trap and mumble rap in this song, which are popular but not his usual style. maybe there's a much simpler message about musical trends at play? or maybe that's just part of it
