They always say don't judge a book by its cover but... I bought Haunted Forest Tour based on its cover and was not disappointed. It's good schlocky fun

I've bought a copy as I like "good schlocky fun".

I loved 'Clickers' so sounds right up my street.

Ohhhh poo poo, I didn't realize Aliens: Bug Hunt was gonna have a story by my dude Brian Keene in it.

Just went down a bit of a rabbit hole & found out that Scott Sigler wrote Aliens: Phalanx

I'm a bit burned out with the Aliens franchise but I love both authors so am definintely checking them out.

Yeah I think the only time I've gotten scared from prose is when I read House of Leaves as a teen, or various online stories/creepypastas. Really liked Ted's Caving Page. I think there's a lack of punch with a novel vs a short ghost story.

If you like 'Ted the caver' you should give The Descent by Jeff Long a try.

I read this last year and was conflicted about even mentioning it here because it’s really more an adventure book than a horror book.

I enjoyed it well enough to finish it, but not enough to move on to the second book in the series

Adventure with horror elements pretty much sums it up, I thought the sequel is a bit more horror though.

The Descent by Jeff Long is a kinda adventure/horror mashup thats pretty long.

I really enjoyed it & it has a sequel called Deeper that is also pretty good.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but what should I read if I'm on a big Diablo kick at the moment? (Nathan Ballingrud comes to mind, as does Between Two Fires, but I've read those)

I've no idea if they are any good but there are some Diablo novels available.

Right now I'm reading The Black Farm. If you're into Dark Souls/Bloodborne bleak religio-weirdness, it'll be up your alley. A couple of the creature designs have really stuck with me in my imagination.

Based on this I had a break from the westerns & read Black Farm, it's a bloody good read.

I've just started the sequel & it seems more of the same so things are looking good so far.

That's where I stopped. MAn I just want people dying to horrible cave monsters. Is that SO much to ask for.

The Descent by Jeff Long is pretty much that.

There is not a sequel. Oh my god there's a sequel. I refuse to put myself through more of it, I'm certainly not its audience. But man, that's unsurprising. Iirc from what I read off and on, the main woman character in The Descent seems fairly competent and fleshed out. A nun that's conflicted with religion, agrees to try to save the world anyways, mostly self reliant as far as the plot allows, realistically.

And yes that's honestly what it feels like to read it. There's enough enjoyable parts that I'll trudge through the poo poo I don't vibe with. Like, I'd bring a physical copy to the beach and leave it by the trash can. Someone else can read it, or tip it into the garbage. Either way, that feels like its natural fate.

The sequel is pretty much more of the same but goes a bit more into the 'devil' side of things.

I took them for what they were & enjoyed both.

I read Descent what must have been 20 years ago and remember nothing but how long it felt. Cool concept but I don't know I'd want to re-read it.

My current read is The Thirteenth Koyote, one of the splatter westerns

I've read a few of the splatter westerns & they are loving excellent.

This exists, there's a great short story - the name of which I can't recall, which is infuriating - about a haunted house that desperately wants people to like it and want to live in it.

I thought this sounded interesting so had a google..

I found Open House on Haunted Hill by John Wiswell which sounds exactly like it.

I've stuck it on my tbr list.

*edit*
found it online & its pretty good.

They're good! It's been several years since I've read them but I thought the concept/setting and characters were really good, and my only real complaint was the Keene-y ending to book 2. But I mean this is the horror genre so you're already at 50/50 the ending isn't going to work for you.

I liked them too & the ending makes sense to me seeing as all his books are supposed to be in the same general place but different dimensions or some such.

I’ve only read two of the Splatter Westerns and they both pretty good (Dust and 13th Koyote). Blood Meridian should definitely count too

I've read 10 or so of the Splatter westerns & the quality varies a fair bit between books, that said I still enjoyed them.

Dead in the West & Deadman's Crossing by Joe R Lansdale are supposed to be good & on my to read list.
