The non-spoiler reviews I've read about Cabin seem really good but also uniformly pan the ending.

plz dont pull out posted:

So for the month of October I tried to read some horror to get in the spirit of the season, those books being I'm thinking of Ending Things, The Disappearance at Devil's Rock, and Enter, Night. These are actually the first books I've finished since high school and honestly I came away from the whole experience really frustrated, both with the books themselves and with novels in general. In all three cases I was really invested in the story up to the ending, then it all came apart for me in the last couple pages. Spoilers for all three.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things didn't have a bad ending in my opinion. It just went from a spooky ghost story into a "it was all in the main character's head" thing which is never a trope I find interesting and just makes everything unsettling in the rest of the novel "safe" since the reader knows it didn't actually happen. The Disappearance at Devil's Rock felt like it was gonna be a slow burn that built into really creepy conclusion where you find out what's behind the supernatural stuff but you don't. The scares/hauntings never really pick up and the ending doesn't explain or contextualize any of it. Enter, Night was great up to the last few pages where it just kinda stops. The vampire lord is still hanging out and half the town is still vampires and all we get is a vague allusion to the mother and daughter getting out of the town alive. I haven't read the bit at the end with the priest yet but how the main story ended was a real bummer.

I can see where other people would like the way these ended but for me it's just been frustrating to spend hours on three separate stories and have each of em fall flat consecutively. I'm switching gears to westerns with The Sisters Brothers now but for afterwards if anybody has any recommendations for something creepy that they feel has a satisfying conclusion I'd be happy to hear em.

Kill two birds with one novel.

Read "My Work Is Not Yet Done" for more of Ligotti's Lovecraft meets Office Space.

Just caught this blurb in the Wiki article:

quote:

In Brandon Robshaw's brief review for The Independent, the book's prose was compared both favourably and unfavourably to Edgar Allan Poe's: "Parts of this are as creepy as Edgar Allan Poe. Unfortunately, the prose is also as ponderous as Edgar Allan Poe. Ligotti simply will not use one word where he can use lots of them."

Don't know how I feel about Monsterland, the adaptation of NALM on Hulu, after checking out the first episode last night.

Don't terribly mind the actor choices even though the male protagonist/antagonist(?) doesn't really fit the description in the story. No one can get a south Louisiana accent or the grammar correct, though that's a small nitpick since I'm from the area. I was really digging it up into the "reveal". I need to look at NALM on my Kindle, but I don't remember that part in the book being as fleshed out in terms of an explanation. I seem to remember a bit of it was left to the reader's imagination.

I'm off Monday so I'm gonna' sit through a few more episodes. My girlfriend, who hasn't read NALM, told me she felt "weird" after watching the first episode. Which, all things considered, is probably where most people find themselves at the end of a Ballingrud tale.

NALM is like some art poo poo. It's so very, very good but you need to be in the right headspace to process it. Like Schindler's List is a great movie but maaaaaaybe not what you want after a long day at work and you just want to chill.

Speaking of : killed Devolution and my opinion on it remains the same. It's an enjoyable little popcorn book that's engaging but is miles away from something NALM because it's just trying to be trash that makes you want to keep reading. It's got one plot point that's kind of ??????? but is otherwise pretty tight, and while it's dumb I did finish it in less than 24 hours while being super busy.

I'd call it a solid "if you see it in your price range and want something to do for a bit, pick it up, but keep in mind this is Evil Dead not Suspiria". (And I love both, just they're different and if you wanted the one and got the other you'd be disappointed.)

You already sold me with “Group of Bigfoot go ham on...”

Now this is fascinating, which collection was it? Beneath a Pale Sky seems well-regarded, but I haven't been able to find any excerpts to judge by.

Paula Ashe’s We Are Here To Hurt Each Other might be in the wheelhouse of what you’re looking for, also.

Loved it too; read it a few months back on someone's recco here in the thread. Something about female horror authors (Brite & Koje come to mind) that Ashe has on display as well is a very particular delivery & syntax. I can't quite put a finger to it, but parts of WAHtHEO gave me weird vibes, almost like Ligotti. It's a good book.

I can't remember where I got this recco from, but A Lush & Seething Hell is a really good weird horror collection from John Horner Jacobs. It reads like a more refined & cosmopolitan Laird Barron.

The Secret of Ventriloquism is very derivative of Thomas Ligotti (openly so), but I did enjoy it and think it’s probably worth a read. It’s a short story collection but there are threads that tie the stories together that become more apparent the farther along you get in the book.

I’m pretty sure I enjoyed Home Before Dark when I read it but I also can’t remember anything about it (and in fact grabbed it from the library a second time a month or two ago and got through 20-25 pages before realizing I had already read it). Not exactly a ringing endorsement but I can say that I at least liked it enough to seek out other novels by Riley Sager.
