Once cats actually start to show they're ill there's often not much to be done, alas. They are very good at trucking on through moderate discomfort and injury. I'm sorry about your cat, he looks like a chill dude who is well loved

Looking nice! Hope it's not such a long wait till the next rain. What are you doing with the berries? Apples are early this year too and blackberry and apple crumble is one of my fave things ever. (The galls/gall wasps are spelt as in gall bladder, so you don't have to confuse them with dark age Europeans unless you really want to.)

Goddamn loving the rain today. I'm sure the feeling will fade quickly but currently it's just a pleasure to be out in. Very fresh. Sorry about your window but glad you found perspective on it later

First impression of those droppings was sheep, but deer seem a more likely candidate, unless I've misjudged the size - if they're tiny I'd guess wild rabbits?

Nice updates! Spring getting its groove on means a ton of work for you. Is box blight much of a problem around your area? It's really hard to grow box here in London without it picking up spores. Which is a shame because it's one of my favourite plants - my granny had a little box maze/rose garden so it brings back fond memories of her.

Glad you're back up to full speed after the cat scratch fever and everything. Good choice of beverage too. Funny about the badger - I found a dead fox in my (small) garden earlier this week when I went out to plant my potatoes - no visible signs of illness, excessive age or injury, just stretched out stiff next to the compost heap. I dunno if it got poisoned and/or someone found it in the playing field out back and chucked it over the fence or what. Anyway I gave it a decent burial near the grave of our crippled old rescue cat Boo. RIP. E: also (reading a post I missed) weed slashers are great fun. Didn't know they weren't supposed to be sharp though! What's the reasoning there? Maugrim fucked around with this message at 22:49 on Mar 29, 2019 |

I've been trying to figure out if you have British bluebells or the inferior Spanish hybrids. Not an expert but to me it looks almost like a mix - that first picture has many with the wider frilled bells of the Spanish ones, but the second picture looks more like a British one to me. Do they smell nice? I don't usually notice any scent from the Spanish ones.

Thanks for the bluebell pics! I know how weirdly hard it is to get good ones. It does look like you have a mix - some colonies of nice shade-loving British ones, a few Spanish ones and plenty of hybrids. Generally the Spanish ones tend to be a slightly lighter colour, taller and more upright with flowers all around the stem rather than drooping off to one side, and will happily grow in sun whereas the British ones need at least partial shade. Hybrids can have characteristics of both. Main reason I prefer the British ones is because I love the heady scent a carpet of them brings to a woodland.

I just got a shiny new bigger, higher res phone and man your pictures look so much better on this screen. We've got a sprawling cherry tree in our garden that's just getting to picking time but the birds are doing their best to beat us to it. Gonna take the ladder out when it stops raining

DesperateDan posted:I was going to net this year but much like last year it didn't happen for various reasons and I consoled myself by planting more cherry trees So far we have reached a detente - the tree is about 30ft tall and my stepladder is about 6ft, so the birds are welcome to the ones I can't reach, i.e. most of them. Still getting about 200g a day which will be enough to make jam soon!

Oh no. Crowdfund getting a basic access track of your own put in - I don't know how much it would cost but if it's only a few k I would not be surprised if you could raise it (and the person employing you to work on the land may also be willing to put something extra towards it?)

Any spider experts lurking itt? I saw a lovely pure white spider with bright red markings eating a bee on the lavender yesterday. Unfortunately my phone with decent camera is off being repaired, so I only managed to get an out-of-focus picture with the piece of crap I'm using as a temp phone. At least you get an impression of size I guess? It doesn't seem to appear on any of the lists of common UK spiders...
