So the Tories are thinking about introducing longer tenancy contracts, even if presumably without the protections to make it meaningful - it is the Tory party we are talking about after all. Aside from being another case of copying Labours supposedly unworkable policies, the BBC article does contain this great ALAB quote (and nothing in support of the proposal): BBC posted:"I am a landlord with one house used as a pension top-up after my wife's state pension age was hiked up at short notice," he said. My heart bleeds for the elderly couple who won't be able to kick out people they don't like out of their homes on short notice. And somehow I suspect they have rather less concern about the impact of rent rises than pension age increases. Also the BBC app no longer allows copying text, annoyingly e; fb Didn't realise the article has already been posted earlier! That's what I get for skipping a page before posting. jabby posted:I think it depends on the contract. As far as I know you can have a contract that includes regular 'reviews' of the rent with the opportunity for the Landlord to jack it up as much as they want. Oh, that wasn't my experience at all in London - it was super easy to get renting, so I thought it didn't happen here, but if it does, gently caress them then. In general gently caress landlords of course. People who rent should always be protected to the detriment of landlords because of course they loving should they're in a much, much more vulnerable position. "Oh no, I won't make as much money out of my property" vs "Oh no I don't have a loving roof over my head" hmmm yes tough choice

jabby posted:So what do we think of this new Mexican President who's likely to be elected? I see the papers calling him left-wing and some comments from Corbyn on Twitter, but what's he all about? Seems like a pretty significant step for global socialism for a country like Mexico to be making him President, but how much power will he actually have? Probably the worst thing the Tories could do to their base. They'll stick with them through racism, they'll stick with them through increased homelessness, they'll stick with them through targeted harassment of disabled people through the DWP, but they will NOT stand for anything that could slightly inconvenience them and their buy to let lifestyle.

To get my current six-month tenancy I had to show proof of earnings, several payslips, as did my fiance who also works, and we still had to pay double the usual deposit because as a doctor my job exists in four-month placements and they refused to believe my income wouldn't drop to zero at the end of my current contract. So yeah, if two full-time workers one of whom is a doctor is still not enough income security for these cunts it's safe to assume new laws aren't going to make them any worse. In Vancouver (which is where I live now, very weird) landlords can put up rent by a maximum of I think 5% per year with three months notice and can only charge half a month's rent as a deposit. Also agency fees don't exist which is awesome. However, the market is absolutely crazy with very little capacity so landlords do tend to do credit checks and ask for your SIN (like national insurance number) even though they're not supposed to, because if you don't give it to them they'll just rent to someone who will. They also ask for loads of references, proof of income etc. Again, if you don't bend over backwards or have a good history you're in trouble because there's so much demand. Renovictions are a big problem where landlords say they want to move back into the home which is a valid reason to kick you out, then renovate crappily for a month and rent it back out for a hugely jacked up price. Basically gently caress landlords everywhere.

I heard one of those Directline ads on the radio with Harvey Keitel doing his menacing fixer bit, except this one was aimed at landlords. Talking about how times are hard and tenants can't always pay the rent, so the insurance company will cover their payments until they're kicked out. "It'll all be over soon" Feels a bit less cute somehow WhatEvil posted:https://twitter.com/akalamusic/status/1013418827101679616 Yeah man, it's great. Show it to everyone

This is a first world problem I know but seeing we are talking about renting/owning thought I would like to share my family's 'unique' situation. Over the last 10 years my family have inherited 3 houses in Northern Ireland. gently caress cancer. One is a derelict, other two renovated. We lived in one of them for a few years but had to get a new bungalow for my mother who can not now go up the stairs in any of the others. So we have to sell the 3 to pay for the bungalow, and where we are in the middle of nowhere, no one wants to buy. Dead end hamlet town in the middle of sheep and bigotry country. The places have been up for a year or two now, and we are currently selling them all at a loss of 20k-30k of the bungalow cost. If the 3 houses were here in the city I am now, 200 miles away, they would be worth 500k-750k no problem. So yeah, gently caress it all. Nukes are most welcome.
