Just read that Pavard plays as center-back for his club. It’s interesting to see that 3 center-backs played in a back 4, with one of them played “out-of-position” as a fullback, is still such a winning strategy internationally. The same formation underpinned Germany in 2014 (Howedes at LB) and Spain in 2010 (Ramos at RB). More club teams should try it. (Tottenham does it a bit with Dier.)

Varane gave up the only goal (a Hummels header) when France were dumped out of the quarterfinals during the 2014 World Cup. He must be fully elated.
