The official reason as to why he attends it as the President is to promote well being between parties and institutions of power, and because a big part of the Avante! festival is to promote and celebrate Portuguese arts and regional culture. He skips the last day speech by PCP's secretary general and does not go to the workshops so his contact with communism festival is old people with Che t-shirts. But the real reason is that he loves being on TV, and also likes to troll a certain sect of his own party.
