I backed this on kickstarter with some spare money I never even thought I would see the fruit off.
I believe back then in 2012 a 2016 release was projected, albeit never officially.

Now in 2018 I have not played one decent new MMO since that date for more than let's say two months. And I'm sure it's not only the developer's fault but also we, the players, have unachievable expectations (and all different too for that matter).

But...
I will definitely play this, even though I stopped reading the weekly spam I get in my mailbox and I have not logged in since one of the first closed alpha's.

The problem with all modern PVE MMO's is that the poopsockers we all are clear all the content within one or two months, and they can never hope to keep up to satisfy demand.

If they do this right, and there are good reason to go out and bash eachother's skulls over and over and capture whatever to build stuffs... yes, that could keep people busy for a while.

But as with any MMORPG, character progression is important. People need incentives to go do stuff. People who don''t need it could just as well go play a shooter.

I have the 110$ "Young Hero" package, which I kickstarted with. It is not on the description of tiers you listed, but I suppose it will more or less be the same as the 120$ "Hero" package.

I stopped logging into the Alpha build a long time ago, so I hope whenever the Beta officially starts I'll notice some definite progress.

(2012... it doesn't feel as long ago to me, I must be getting old. I've waited longer for this game than I have played DAoC...)

This DaoC thread is still alive. (not using the word "active" though)

I'm pretty sure roaming in the frontier in a group will be what the players will do. This might not directly have a "purpose", but this is what 99% of the DAoC veterans want the game for. (Well there will be a purpose, farming RP's off course).

Also if Darkness Falls is any indication, the Deep dungeon will require some open world control to get access for your realm. So you'll want to do what's necessary for your realm to gain direct access.

Gathering,Crafting & Building is going to be a big timesink though. And with the better resources being in contested territory a proper escort and defense will be required.

Somehow I hope gathered resources get dropped upon death so there is an extra incentive to go kill the Peons (and protect them)

I'd even say offtime people are very important, because when the main force goes to sleep those structures still require some defense.
Being a Euro myself we have raided countless keeps without any opposition in DAoC.

I have no idea if there will be any sort of invulnerability timers on structures, or that something can be attacked around the clock (I suspect the latter).

DAoC, which is still running, has some of the most dedicated hardcore PVP guilds/groups.
Darkness Falls has never been an issue as it was so easy to unlock.
Once unlocked it was basically never defended because all possible defenders rushed inside the dungeon from their side.
Your' people who are in the zone when you lose control remained inside, it was just impossible to zone back in if you leave/die.

Actually that was when the fun really began : to ambush enemy carebears doing their PVE, and then retreat in the depths of the zone before the clean-up squad finds you.

Reminds me of traders in Archeage. Steal those backpacks o.0

Archeage was nife for playing mini farmville and some skirmish pvp over the seas and stealing packs.

Then they completely destroyed the game by making it p2w (those thunderstruck logs from cash shop), countless underworld forests, and that zone to farm for better weapons than the best crafted items.

I loved the class system too.

It'll be ready to play when I'll start to get bored of Lost Ark's Western release I hope...

What kind of balance issues did WAR had? Because for the brief time I played I found that both sides had exactly the same abilities available... just mixed up a bit and given to different classes.

There shouldn't be levels in a true PVP game... gaining extra realm abilities (in the form of boons and banes) and better gear should be enough.
What was the fun in instajibbing a grey con enemy? (it WAS fun, kinda...)

The main difference between GW2's WvW and Camelot's RvR is that for GW2 each side is a different server, each with exactly the same classes and style that rotate on a schedule, auto balancing the clusters.
For Camelot you have classic "servers" with each of them three totally distinct sides battling eachother forever, thus creating the possibility of true rivalries and feuds.

I think both mechanics have their upsides and downsides.
WvW automatically balances the game by putting servers of equal strength against each other. But your opponents feel more nameless.
RvR you always face the same groups of enemies, making reputation a big thing ("carefull, Trauma is roaming the frontier!")... but can result in one realm dominating. This can be mitigated by the two realms cooperating somewhat (more by targetting the leader than really helping eachother out)

Avoiding players while ninja harvesting good materials in enemy frontiers sounds like fun to me though...

I still don't understand why we are still using "levels" in a PvP game.
Make progress unlock extra abilities, boons&banes, and other shenanigans... but I don't see the point of levels anymore.

The sad thing is I have no interest whatsoever in de Lego part of the game. I just want good RvR.
I'll be the guy defending the working peons, even maybe chip in an mine some materials. Custom made structures is cool and all, but they're only there to support the main aspect of the game.

I wrote off my investment years ago.

Since then i've played EQ progress servers, WoW classic, ... i'm not even sure I actually want to play an MMO anymore at this time.

I guess one of the best game (franchises) to come out of a Kickstarter must be Divinity : Original Sin. that game delivered (and beyond) what was expected from it.

DAoC free to play? ... is that with all the current content and expansions or will they also launch a "classic" version? Or at least open new fresh servers.

Evernoob
Jun 21, 2012
Yes, but if there is indeed a huge influx of players, throwing them in the pool where everyone is RR5+ (hell, i bet plenty of groups are full RR10+ by now) and fully templated.... that is going to be a bloodbath.

I do understand they want to completely change the whole mmorpg thing, but am I wrong if I say that -most- people who pledged mainly want a 2012....err i mean 2020 update of DaoC with decent graphics and gameplay, with some world/castle building, with the whole game foremost centered on RvRvR.

When I pledged for the kickstarter I just started dating.... now I think my children I have with her will be old enough to play on release...

I've written off my 110$ kickstarter pledge and I'm not even requesting a refund. Not worth the stress or hassle to not get it anyway.

Looks like AoC shaping up to become the current gen replacement that could scratch that itch (and some others too).
If you look at what the last CU build looks like, you quickly realize even for 2012 the graphics would have been quite mediocre. Let alone 2022.
