just read dylan riley's 'what is trump' (published in new left review)* and thought it was insigthtful. alough the main point is to call into question the constantly appearing claims that yrump's a fascist, or atleast defuse most of the conclusions one might draw from that comparison, i liked how it specified exactly why trump's approach to politics is such disaster even when excluding his personal qualities/capabilitis/bqhatever.

quote:

The combination of a charismatic leader ruling in patrimonial fashion over a legal-rational bureaucratic state, in a political system that is largely oligarchic, within its democratic forms, is constitutively—and manifoldly—contradictory. Trump’s incoherence as a ruler is thus not just, though also, a temperamental failing. It is a structural effect of the kind of figure he cuts, presiding over the kind of political-cultural order that is postmodern America. The extreme form of hybridity he embodies suggests that it is futile to assign to him any general classification like fascism, authoritarianism or populism, even though he may exhibit traits of at least the third, if not the second—as well as nationalism, racism and sexism. Flukey in origin, this form of rule is too unstable a compound to have much staying power. There is no Trumpian ideology or ‘cause’ to which loyalists might commit themselves when he leaves office. After all, the President’s own political background is firmly rooted in the New York Democratic machine.

can anyone chime in on the FT weekend print subscription?

considering my budget i have two options: i can buy a daily online subscription or i can buy the weekend print subscription (for a little less). idk if i'd take full advantage of the online subscription, checking FT every day and all. also, the weekend edition is cheaper, and since it's in print i'd even have the opportunity of reading it outside of my room, without having to stare at a screen, etc. it seems like the weekend edition comes with a bunch of other bullshit that i don't care about. but, if it reliably complies the major stories featured in the daily, i think i'd go with that. plz help

gonna pick up an n+1 digital subscription since it's only $4.50 a month.

this will be my first time subscribing to them, so i'm entirely unfamiliar with their backlog. if anyone could post some of their favorite articles, beyond what's in the OP, or put together a 'best of' list or whatever, i'd appreciate it

while it's not explicitly political, i liked the following article and think some of you would too.

it's primarily about drinking culture, and a PMC professor's struggles to fit in to the de-industrializing poo poo town where he landed a professorship. but the author's description of turning their home into a virtual republic of letters, thru magazine subscriptions or whatever, as a way to escape their dreary surroundings rang true to me, even if i scoffed at their choice of reading (new york times and economist lol)

Does this thread do requests? I'm looking for articles or relevant book reviews on partisanship, particularly blind partisanship.

the book democracy for realists sort of covers this stuff. check out summaries or reviews to see if it sounds good to you, imo

chapters 8 and 9 are titled "The Very Basis of Reasons: Groups, Social Identities, and Political Psychology" and "Partisan Hearts and Spleens: Social Identities and Political Change," respectively

there's a bunch of other poo poo in the book, but it's written by two political scientists so it'll at least point you to some of the other work on the topic

edit: i agree with the other posters criticizing 'partisanship' as a useful concept in explaining or understanding us politics. voters' beliefs and actions aren't really what drive the political process, so examining one aspect of voter psychology or political preference formation or whatever isn't going to be super revealing

unlike the usual poo poo i link itt, this isn't from some marxist journal or w/e. but it's a surprisingly frank long-form article about how power actually operates in US politics, so i feel like people who read this thread might find it interesting as well
