Edit: Haha he's using LTFS

honestly most of the appeal of the channel is watching the guy spend inordinate amounts of money on things then proceeding to comprehensively gently caress them up; with that in mind the videos are way more enjoyable

the actual reviews are pretty execrable tho what with the graphs flashing up for like a second (i know they want you to pause but it just looks weird). also the infomercial style b-roll and the bits where his wife gestures to parts of laptops (which evoke the plane safety videos where the steward shows you how to put on a life jacket imo). don't get me wrong i loving adore cheese but the dissonance when it's clearly being shot with camera equipment that costs more than my house

Despite his style a number of his videos are pretty interesting. I have to admit I watch a number of youtubers that have a terrible style that would never be fit for traditional broadcast.

i mean that's the whole point of the medium is it not? i don't think most people watch youtubers for something as professional and rehearsed as broadcast tv; you're there for the ~authenticity~. i think brits do it well. or at least the british tv i grew up on was always kind of scrappy and low-fi compared to the american stuff so it warms the cockles of my heart etc

overall i think LGR is like the absolute king of this stuff though; the videos are incredibly well produced while still having this homely, cozy vibe. frankly i'd watch that poo poo if it was on tv, but i think the youtube format really suits him. the production value of linus et al (when he's trying really hard to do a big timey review, i actually kind of like his stream of consciousness fuckups) feels a bit wrong to me, like a sultana in a salad

I was recently surprised to see Barnacules actually has been releasing videos, like once a month or so but he is releasing videos. The biggest reason I stopped watching Barnacules was the number of items he gets donated to him as well as the over usage of dumb jokes *ladies*. I cant really hate on someone for getting free poo poo like a robotic arm or a Peugot Sound computer worth $10K, I just don't want to support someone who gets free poo poo and then does not use it. I felt like Barnacules was either spending too much money, or being given too much free stuff, and not using the expensive tech enough in his videos. I'm not sure if I consider Barnacules better or worse than Linus, they both make immature jokes and waste a lot of money, only Linus is successful at whoring himself and Barnacules is not. I do think that lately Linus' tech videos are more informative than Barnacules, but that's not saying much. Linus and Barnacules both make me interested in the tech they are talking about without being as dry and professional as more educational, strictly technical videos.

i really hate the guy's style so i don't generally watch him but apparently he's clinically depressed with ongoing mental health issues which prob explains the sporadic uploading. hope he's managing ok

Yeah, I first watched a GN video after one was linked somewhere ITT and occasionally check out what they have going on, but most of the reviews are borderline incomprehensible because Steve's just rushing through a ton of text and numbers.

problem is that tons of well researched graphs are the absolute best thing you would want to understand how good a component is, but the absolute worst thing to put in a video

the only channel i’ve seen that actually incorporates graphs well is digitalfoundry, where you get a video of the gameplay overlaid with a live fps/frame time graph. it’s really good to help them explain micro-level performance quirks and actually makes use of the video format.

i’m sure GN would say that the written review is the more informative piece, but i’m sure they’d also say that the exposure you get from having a youtube presence is too much to pass up

This doesn't just grind my gears, it ate their teeth already. In a professional setting, this is unacceptable. Dear God, the times I get calls about an app of mine throwing "errors", one of the typical procedures would be me asking what the error message is, answered often by an "Uhm I don't know, let me check", then followed by an "Ooooooohh". Ad nauseum. What in the gently caress.

to be fair, years of using windows has trained people to automatically assume any error message is indecipherable gibberish that has to be parsed by an anointed one that knows the right incantations. doesn’t make it any less frustrating though

Yes, all Youtubers with any sense will back up all their video files in case they need to re-edit them or grab old footage. Tom Scott’s said in the past he has petabytes of backups of everything he’s done since 2002 including the original Iron Chefs video.

i do think it’s probably a bit overkill considering how ephemeral the medium is; they could probably get away with compressing it a ton and no one would notice. granted overkill is the point of the channel

I think GN has a system where they have all their more recent stuff saved on their server at full quality, but past a certain time they automatically get compressed and saved to a separate storage server.

yeah this is what i was saying is the logical choice - save compressed versions of the archived footage by all means if you want, it does beat just keeping the rendered projects or downloading it from youtube every time you want to clip something, but keeping the raw uncompressed originals is excessive; they're a tech youtube channel, not the criterion collection.

i'm not gonna judge them too much for it tho since the 'we hosed up our server' or 'we got this new enterprise tech that we barely know how to use' stuff is my favourite content from them. the scripted content, benchmarks, reviews etc i am less of a fan of. nobody watched top gear for an intimate understanding of tyre grip coefficients, power-to-weight ratios or emissions testing.

Yes, their first big homebrew NAS project was a raid0 of raid5s. Fast, resilient to drive failure, insanely vulnerable to a controller failure.

And when one of the controllers did fail, that cockamamie scheme was so obtuse that they needed specialists to reconstruct it.

I think archiving all your footage in full quality is pretty superfluous for a youtube channel -- it's not like in 20 years people are going to want "The Complete LTT Box Set, now in 8k!" like a TV series. But they can, and the project to make a petabyte NAS is more content. And when said NAS catches on fire, it's yet more content.

this happened again very recently where they had moved all the archival to zfs which is meant to ensure data integrity, but no one had remembered to set up the scrubs that actually do the work of checking for data errors. a bunch of drives had silently failed out of the array over the years and they ended up having to call wendell from l1t for help

I think this is the appeal. It's a bunch of dumb guys messing around doing dumb computer stuff and figuring stuff out as they go along. I love this stuff! It's a guilty pleasure for sure but I really like all the videos about them breaking their servers and hacking together stuff out of spare parts etc. It's in no way good IT practice but it's computer top gear, I don't expect that. I hope they never hire a full time qualified IT guy for that reason. Them pawing at stuff and loving up and sometimes getting stuff working as time goes on is the whole appeal of the channel for me.

The problem is this attitude doesn't really work when you're trying to be a serious review channel. I never really understood why he wanted to be this considering his ethos is kind of at odds with that. Reviews generate a ton of views I guess, they're relatively easy to film, and there will always be some 13 year olds taking them as gospel so it's good that he WANTS to make the accurate, but again, it's kind of at odds with the way they run their whole operation.

That ethos also doesn't fit with all the stuff you have to do to make a larger company a decent place to work. At a certain point you have to have processes in place and a degree of professionalism behind the camera. I suspect this is a growing pain a lot of small businesses have to go through. Really the main path forward here is for him to completely divorce himself from the business/operations side and just focus on the creative stuff. It looks like this is what he's trying to do but he needs to fully commit to it and stop loving airing all this poo poo out on social media lmao
