Depending on what direction your covered section's openings/windows are going to be facing, you might want to consider skylighting. My parents had a North & East facing covered porch at a similar geographic latitude, and on overcast days it would be pretty gloomy in there most of the day (until they had it redone and added skylights.) Unless of course your method is going to be an awning or whatever.
