Sounds like you need to sharpen your drills. Rivets are a pain but they gotta be aluminum, so it’s maybe 5 seconds per to drill the head off?

Usually when a headliner has failed it’s been in a POS I don’t care about, and I use a staple gun to hold up the floppy bits, but I wonder if you could use some plastic rivets to good effect? Might not even look bad.
