Like shooting poo poo in a barrel

I'm trying to finish the 3rd draft of a short story, nearish-future scifi primarily focused on the interaction between the protagonist and an emergent, city-spanning AI. Writing sucks and is bad and I should go back to drawing.

I dunno if you've already posted about this thread in the art threads, but you might wanna pop into the major CC threads and let people know this is here, since many folks only read the threads in their bookmarks.

Is your AI self-improving ? I can imagine weird poo poo with a relationship when one person is growing smarter by the second. It'd be a bastard to write though.

I'm focusing on one construct within the AI, created to facilitate interaction with the protagonist. The construct is indeed self-teaching, but this is a problem when it starts to disagree with the rest of itself!

No fuckin' idea if i'll pull it off.

whenever i find myself struggling with the hollowness of the creative process, I make myself revel in it. Like, gently caress, it's not illegal to make meaningless poo poo. If you think too hard about anything it starts to feel meaningless. So I open a google doc and start writing all like "yeah you're a dirty, pointless little story and no one will ever love you. i'm gonna write you so hard even though it's all bullshit, i'm gonna MAKE you exist even though you're trying to shove yourself back up the sphincter of my imagination"

Go for it! Keeping a weekly (or at least regular) schedule, having the winner of last week judge the next and not responding to crits are the key elements that make td work but grab what works, I suspect artists might be tougher than writers about having their babies told they are ugly. Let me know if you want mod help for anything.

i was summoned from my dusty crypt to talk about thunderdoming but yeah basically this.

additionally, the reason writing TD has worked so well is because it's incredibly simple (three judges, the winner of one round judges the next, don't respond to crits), so there aren't too many rules to rules lawyer about. We've added a few over the years, as needed, but mostly the contest is a loosely functional headless monster, and I think that's its strength.

I would probably throw my hat in the ring of artdome, though I got nothing on a lot of the very skilled folks here!

-If we're concerned about scaring off potential participants how would people feel about having this be a win-only thing for now? As in there would be a winner and HMs but no losers or DMs which would let people participate without being afraid getting their feelings hurt. I'm kind of of two minds on this one since I personally kind of like having having loser titles given but I can see how it could be intimidating, particularly for newer artists who are still learning.

This depends, really. A traditional contest certainly wouldn't have losers or dishonorable mentions. So the question is whether you want people to feel like they're participating in a contest, as opposed to a cage match. I know what worked for writing TD, and honestly, it's thrived in spite of hurt feelings.

Sorry, but can one of you explain what you’re talking about? A drawing contest of some sort?

Thunderdome is a weekly short fiction contest here in CC. Each round has a winner, a loser, and some honorable and dishonorable mentions, chosen by a rotating trio of judges.

Right now people are talking about creating an art contest with a similar structure.

So a little while ago Sebmojo asked people to weigh in on what could make CC better and a big thing was that it would be nice to have a central, bookmarkable hub for links and projects. To that end we've come up with the Creative Convention project index, where people can link to their individual threads. Also included is a list of links I hope are helpful.
