I went to see The Secret Life of Pets in the theater with my mom when it came out. It was a cute movie and a nice bonding experience but I got a bit uncomfortable when this scene played https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blw-aWpWbpM For those unfamiliar with this song by System of a Down, the lyrics are pretty blatantly about an orgy. It was pretty bizarre to hear that song start playing during a kid's movie. Obviously I didn't say anything and just kind of laughed to myself at how inappropriate it was. You can even look up the lyrics online as part of the Secret Life of Pets soundtrack: https://lyricsondemand.com/soundtracks/s/secretlifeofpetslyrics/bouncelyrics.html So, what examples have you seen of music used in movies, or really any circumstances with background or featured music, that are (or seem to be) blissfully unaware of the meaning of the song?

Here is an ad for Jeep from a few years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jff5bVYEmI The song is Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down." I always thought "You're gonna die, sinner! Buy a Jeep" was a weird marketing message, especially for a vehicle - making sure you don't get killed is usually a major selling point.

Not quite on the level of other stuff in this thread, but one of the local rock stations played "Rooster", "Born in the USA", and "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" in sequence last 4th of July, which is either incredibly tone deaf or pretty ballsy.

The entire soundtrack to Suicide Squad was awful. Every song was overused, outdated, chopped to pieces, and way too carefully choreographed to the movies visuals. It was so goddamn distracting I almost didn't notice how terrible the movie was as well.

Aesop Poprock posted:Always thought it was weird that modest mouse were on The OC since it seemed to represent everything Isaac Brock hated about society I read an interview with him where he talked about how much he hated hippies. Not for the standard "darn kids and their music, get a haircut!" but because when he was a kid there was a music festival in a park near his home that attracted tons of hippies to it. He loved that park, but after the festival, the hippies had absolutly destroyed it, leaving garbage everywhere, destroying the grass and other plants, and just over all wrecking it. That reminds me how there was a short lived TV series called Time of your Life that was a spin off of Party of Five I think, about one of the characters going off to search for her real dad, and it used that Green Day song as its opening, also based the whole series on that song it seemed. Thing is that song is really melancholy and clearly about a really bad break up and the heartache it caused, not literally hoping for the time of your life.
