What is this game?
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Why is it called that?
Since this game takes place over 358 days before KH 2.

What is this game about?
This game is about Roxas, Axel, and Xion. And it kinda features the rest of the organization, I guess.

I thought that one is a movie?
Well, KH 1.5 released the cutscenes in this game and made it into a movie. I'm going to play the original game so there would be actual gameplay.

This is my first Kingdom Hearts game. Will I understand anything?
Hell no! Kingdom Hearts is notorious for its confusing plots. That said, since even the ones who played all games still doesn't understand the plot, you're more than welcome to join the confusion.
But if you want to be more informed, here's some LPs made by others.

Kingdom Hearts 3 VLP by TheLoneStar

I know about all the games! Can I post spoilers?
I'll allow any spoilers about the Kingdom Hearts franchise without black bars except for KH3. Please use spoiler tags for that one.

I repeat: SPOILERS FOR GAMES BESIDE KH3 ARE ALLOWED WITHOUT SPOILER TAGS IN THIS THREAD!

This is because of 3 reasons:
1. KH plots are confusing even though you might know everything, so it's not like spoiling would make that much of a difference.
2. It's hard to talk about KH without spoiling other games, especially this one since it takes place before, after, and during other games.
3. There's a movie version, so people who don't actually play this game can know the plot already.

I'll even allow gameplay spoilers. In fact, let's just get some spoilers for this game over with (DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!):

Xion is a replica made by Vexen. She dies and is forgotten by the end of the game.
Roxas leaves the organization, fights Riku and is defeated, then put into Data Twilight Town.
Vexen, Lexaeus, Larxene, Marluxia, Zexion all die in Castle Oblivion, thus won't be there for most of this game.
Roxas won't actually get to dual-wield until the final fight against Riku.
Xion is the boss with multiple phases.
Neverland combat is poo poo.
gently caress Leechgrave, Ruler of the Sky, and Dustflier.

This is my first Kingdom Hearts game but I for some reason can't read the other LPs! What is going on? What is Organization XIII?
Essentially, there's a creature called Heartless. When someone's heart becomes a Heartless, their body becomes Nobodies (ignore how the naming doesn't really make sense). The Nobodies have no hearts (because their heart becomes the Heartless), thus they can't feel anything. They want to get hearts, so they try to summon Kingdom Hearts in hopes of getting them.
The protagonist of the previous games, Sora, became a Heartless. He eventually was turned back, but he still created a Nobody. His nobody is our protagonist in this game: Roxas.
There's a LOT more to the plot but that's the (very) basic premise you need to know for this game.

Are you going to do the challenges?
I'm going to TRY doing the challenges, but no guarantees that I'll have enough patience to finish them all. I will be doing all the missions completely, though.

Are you going to post videos?
I'm going to post videos for the cinematic cutscenes in the game (there aren't many in this game). I'll also post videos for some boss fights. The videos are kinda low in quality and might be prone to emulator shenanigans, though. And the resolution will be low because it's for the DS.

Welcome to Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days! The music that plays here is "Dearly Beloved", but I can't extract them. I also can't extract "Sanctuary", probably for obvious reasons.

We're going to do the Story Mode. The Mission Mode is for multiplayer and the Theater Mode is to view cutscenes.

Obviously, we're going to start a new game.

I'm going to do Proud mode because why not. The text for other difficulties reads:
Beginner Mode: An easy mode you can breeze right through. Action not your thing? No worries; start right here.
Standard Mode: The normal difficulty setting. Looking for just the right balance? Choose this.

Video: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Opening (Video until end of update)

The parts with "Sanctuary" (most of them) are muted because copyright issues because Square Enix. Watch the video if you want to see the cutscene in motion, but I'll post the screenshot versions too.

A blurry screen! I just can't find better shots than this. Also, this is Saix speaking here.

The camera pans over every organization member, with those who weren't in CoM with their hoods up.

Releases those hearts. They gather in darkness, masterless and free...until they weave together to make Kingdom Hearts. And when that time comes,

And the point after this is when Sanctuary starts playing and Youtube starts muting.

Roxas...

Say Hello to Twilight Station Tower. It's going to be our main place for ice cream-related events.

Are you really sure that you don't have a heart?
I dunno... I can't...just look inside. But I figure...if there's something in there-inside us-then we'd feel it, wouldn't we?
True enough.

And we have a view of Twilight Town. I'm not showing Axel giving Roxas an ice cream since we'll have more than enough of that later.

Next we have scenes of each member with their shot and description and an art of their weapon. Since this is before Disney owned Star Wars, they can't just call Xemnas' weapon "laser swords".

It's nice when the shot and description shows at the same time. Also, does floating upside down all the time during his fight in KH2 counts as keeping his ears on the ground?

No, he has a regular tongue. Who makes these description, anyway?

I'm sensing a pattern here. I don't have much to say about him, except gently caress his KH2 fight.

Poor Lexaeus, he has so little screentime. How would an Axe Sword fare in the weapon triangle against lances? What the gently caress is an axe sword anyway?

Zexion doesn't even have a weapon until KH Re:CoM. At least he's the most memorable fight in that game, being the only one that you can't cheese easily (except Trick Master).

I'm not going to put two dots on the "i" every single time. Also, Saix just wants to rock like Demyx in that picture.

He was better before he got a keyblade. Next!

Demyx, you can't just break from tradition! You should have your description show up AFTER your shot, not during!

See, Demyx? Because of you, Luxord has to pick up the slack! I think it's a missed opportunity he doesn't show up in the card game, but at least he features prominently in the card world.

Marluxia is pissed that he's demoted from the "Final Boss" status with his right to multiple phases revoked.

Larxene is just happy to hurt you. And why is she the only girl in the organization? If SE doesn't want both Marluxia and Larxene to be women, they could just make someone else, like Xigbar, into a women. It's not hard!

Roxas, being our main character, gets special treatment.

I can give you purpose.

The letters spin around...

Wait a minute! Why is the Kingdom Key there? It should've been Oathkeeper and Oblivion! Does this means we don't get to dual wield keyblades here? (Yes)

This shot here is why every attempt to hide the identities with the coat should fail miserably.

We don't get to see the trio's faces...

...unless you count that mouth.

Man, I miss the old times. Still got it memorized?

Stranger danger! Stranger danger! :kingsley:

Note to everyone, don't trust strangers who invite you to eat ice cream on top of a tower.

The day we met, when you got your new name. You and I sat right here, just like this and watched the sun set.

Roxas' clothes changed, so I guess this is the continuation of the one from the beginning of the intro.

Boy oh boy, I'm getting PTSD flashbacks from that clock tower already. I did want to point out, I dunno if you were joking, but Xigbar's "ear to the ground" is in reference to him snooping around and eavesdropping. Though he really doesn't do it too much. And I think Xaldin's "silver tongue" was because of how he was able to manipulate The Beast.

I think you see the clock tower even more in this game than in the movie. Probably. I didn't count. And yes, I'm joking about those two since I didn't have much to say about them.

I've been replaying, and Leechgrave is actually fairly doable. Round Guard/Block helps, and it's a boss where attacking the boss straight away just gets your rear end handed to you. Take out the Tentalclaws (sp) first, and it goes down for free damage. Takes about three passes with change depending on your setup.

It's not hard, just annoying. The boss itself is pretty similar to Re:CoM Ursula, but the Tentaclaws are spread out over the arena that it's annoying to go to each of them. Multiple times.

Video: Why the Sun Sets Red

We're skipping right to day 255? Okay then.

As I said, Twilight Station Tower. Be prepared to see this place a lot.

You're early.

No, you're just late.

Be prepared to see lots of ice cream too. Sea-salt flavor only, though. BBS ice cream hasn't been invented (by Nomura) yet.

What's that about?
It's been that many days since I first joined the Organization. Man, time flies.
So, you got the number memorized, do ya?

New Music: Roxas
Yeah. Have to hang onto something, right? It's not like I have memories from before the Organization. Don't you remember? I acted like a zombie.
Right, that first week you could barely form a sentence.

Pictured: One of Axel's many murder attempts against the rest of the Organization.

Oh, thanks!
*laughs*
Hey, Roxas. Bet you don't know why the sun sets red.

That doesn't look red to me. It's more orange than red. Try Daybreak Town. I heard it's redder there.

And out of all those colors, red is the one that travels the farthest.
Like I asked! Know-it-all.

*time passes*

The closest thing for me is when I was just seven days old, and I met her.

Starting at Day 7 is much more understandable. We can't just skip to Day 255 out of 358, after all!

New Music: Sacred Moon

Yes, all we just saw was Roxas sleeping then waking up. I guess they want to show us his room? That we never explored in KH2?

After that we got a tutorial. Thanks, game. I wouldn't know to use the D-pad to move and A button to talk, like most other DS games.

This is how the gameplay is going to be. The top screen is where most of the action is going to be, with Attack option being replaced with Talk for now. The bottom screen contains the map, area name, and the mission progress. Obviously we don't have a mission yet so that one's empty.

While we're on The Grey Area (that we never explored in KH2) we can talk to people. This is how we're going to get most of the dialogue from the ones who :airquote:died:airquote: in Castle Oblivion.

There's usually one person we need to talk to progress the game. In this case it's Axel.

Heya, Roxas.
......
Something I can help you with there, chatterbox?
......

They really weren't kidding when saying Roxas was like a zombie.

Ah, I remember now. We were supposed to convene in the Round Room today. Blegh, meetings...
Round...Room...?
Yup. Apparently the boss man's got some big news.

Okay.

Alrighty then. Follow me.

Let's go to the Round Room. Which we never explored in KH2. TWNTW in KH2 is kind of a giant corridor with just 2 brances (Luxord and Saix's arenas).

Video: Meet Xion

Today is a momentous day.

As you can see, none of them have their hood up this time. Organization rules on the hood during meetings are inconsistent.

Some nice shots of the other members.

Number XIV.

Why did Roxas have someone accompany him while Xion doesn't? It's not fair!

Love how relaxed Xemnas looked in this shot.

Video stops here

I couldn't have told you who the people in black coats were, or what they wanted with me.

The problem is the time frame. There's no real space to develop the CoM victims, and after Axel, it's Saix that gets the most screen time in the game.

After that, I think it's Luxord, for all the Wonderland missions. Demyx? Xigbar? Xenmas? Who are those guys?

The game has some real pacing problems, and it honestly suffers for it.

At least Xaldin gets quite a lot of screentime. Even more than Luxord, I think.

TheLoneStar posted:

I like how someone (probably Xemnas) gave each room in The Castle That Never Was some super fancy name, but just got lazy with "The Grey Area".

Don't forget one more example. The room for the meetings? It's called "The Round Room" because it's...round.

There's more rooms that we never find out what their name is since we never explore them. If it follows Days' naming theme, it'll probably be something like "Bedroom XIII."

......
Think of these early missions as exercises. You still have much to learn before we put you to a real test.

Translation: You're going have a few mandatory tutorials.

......

Oh, boy... What, are you making me the kid's mentor now?
Surely you don't mind showing Roxas here the ropes? Roxas, come see me when you're ready to go.

......
Sheesh... Quit acting like a zombie, and let's get this show on the road.

And we get another tutorial. This one is showing that we can open the menu by pressing Start. Good to know.

This is the menu screen. Panels lets you equip armor/accessories/magics/keyblade/abilities. Holo-Missions lets you replay previous missions. Both of them are unavailable right now. Munny and Heart Points are used as currencies. The latter is far more important.

You can see Roxas' stats in the bottom. Most of the numbers speak for itself. Slots and links are related to panels, thus unavailable now. The sigils (Nobody symbol) are obtained by clearing challenges (more on that later) while crowns are obtained by clearing multiplayer missions.

The Journal section has the diary and enemy section. You can see the name of the equipped weapon (since you can't do that while equipping them) and all of the character's abilities. Since Roxas has the light element he starts out with 10% resistance to it.

The diary is basically just a plot recap while the enemy profiles are...well...exactly that. The enemy profile is empty so I won't bother showing it right now. I'll put the new ones we obtain at the end of each update.

The tutorials are if you for some reason forgot about the controls. It includes the tutorial about opening the menu in case you forgot how to open the menu. You have to open the menu to read it. Brilliant.

Config are just to configure things. These are pretty self explanatory. I'm pretty sure the top one if the vibration if you have the Rumble Pak. That one is for Shoulder Controls that will be available later.

The cursor position is just like in RPGs where it either stays at your last action of go back to the top one. Command list determines how you scroll through it. It's either holding X and using the D-pad or just by using the X button. I use the latter, but the former can be nice if you use lots of magic types.

You might think that it would be better to have allies heal Roxas since if he dies, it's Game Over. However, due to the Limit Break mechanic that isn't really recommended.

Xion's name hasn't been revealed at this point. Also, Zexion could just be saying that since Xion is part of his name.

Saix will be the one we talk to go to most missions.

Don't worry. I'll be sure he makes the grade.
C'mon, Roxas.
......

Number XIV, Xion.
Right. I knew that.
Xion.
Got it memorized, Roxas?
...Yeah.
You sure? How 'bout my name, then?
It's Axel.
And our boss's name?
Xemnas.
Very good, Roxas! No way you're gonna forget his name, right? Now let's get moving.

You know, unless his memory is wiped out.

New Music: Lazy Afternoons

Don't expect us to be able to use portals in actual gameplay.

Ahem. Missions are...uhh... They're, you know... Hrm.

Do you need a dictionary?

......
You know what? Talking is dumb. Let's just go ahead and get our hands dirty, shall we? Follow me.

Yep. This day is going to be filled with these kinds of tutorials.

Just go forward and jump. You don't even need to dash while jumping! (Mainly because we can't dash yet).

Thanks.
But don't go thinking you can just run and jump your way through every mission. You've gotta BE AWARE.
What...what do you mean?
You hafta look around. Sometimes what you're after is sitting right under your nose. Got it memorized?
Y...yeah, I think so.
All right, then, time for a road test. There's a treasure chest somewhere in thest passages. I want you to find it.
That's all I have to do?
I know, don't hurt yourself. Anyway, remember to look around.

Hey, look! An actually useful tutorial! What a surprise! I swear the other missions will have more to it.

Anyway, the point where we found Axel is the only exit out of the "room" since everywhere else has shutters blocking them. We go left.

The boxes drop HP and Munny orbs when destroyed. The barrier on the "door" will be addressed later. The number on the top left is how many Heart Points we collected this mission. And there's Axel as our second player this mission.

The road there leads to a dead end, so let's go the other way. No boxes are found in the other way.

There is a switch to open the corresponding shutter. It opens up a nice shortcut (that resets every mission). Only this switch is active this mission. Go a little further...

A barricade. It means you're not supposed to go this way.
You mean there's nothing down there?
Yeah, that's the gist of it. They're set up to keep us on task. That, or out of trouble. I mean, hello, look at it. Big menacing X? I'll take the beaten path, thanks.

I have no trouble believing that Axel would just go through the big, menacing X.

We know, game! Axel just told us! Sheesh, the tutorial in this game is just as bad as KH2! Just go through the path (all exits are sealed) and we'll found the treasure chest.

Sure is! Well done.
......
Um, what are you waiting for?
The mission was to find the chest. Aren't I done?
Uh, Roxas... There's this thing about chests. They have stuff in them.
So I should open the chest?
Yes, that is generally what we do.

Axel: There is also a thing about who places the chests but I try not to think about it too hard.

...What can I say at this point?

Here's a nice thing about this game: Items you found from treasure chests doesn't have to be equipped. You can use them as soon as you found them. So finding a potion when you ran out of healing item/magic an be a life saver.

We open the treasure chest.

:toot: Potions restore 30% of HP.

RTC?
Return To the Castle. Go ahead, lead the way back to the dark corridor that brought us here.

So you have to go back to the starting place manually every mission. It's more annoying than hard unless you're very low on health and have to get through a hard enemy/mob.

And that's where shortcuts that reset every mission become useful.

Uh-huh.
I'm sorry, speak up? Cooouldn't quite catch that.
I said...
Hmm?
I could have done that blindfolded.

That's true. There's only one branching path with the wrong one leading to a dead end very quickly.

Ha ha! I dunno if I want a blindfolded zombie on the loose.
All right, smart aleck, you did good. And no successful mission is complete without a little icing on the cake. C'mon.
But...don't we have to RTC?
Later. Don't you remember our hangout?

New Music: At Dusk, I Will Think of You...

Just for fun, I'm going to count the number of times we see sea-salt ice cream and twilight tower during this LP. I'm not going to count the ones in the intro since we don't know when that exactly take place. The ones in Day 255 will be counted later.

KH 358/2=179 Days of Falling Salty Diabetes
Twilight Station Tower: 1
Sea-Salt Ice Cream: 2

I'm going to say that both numbers might be well above 100 by the time we finish this LP.

...
You remember what this ice cream is called?
Umm...
It's sea-salt ice cream. C'mon, I already told you once. Get it memorized, man.

Ha ha, Roxas, you said the same exact thing the other day.
I did? I don't remember that.
Hey, what has it been, a week since you showed up?
Maybe.
"Maybe"? C'mon, you must remember that much.
......
Well, that's okay. Today's where it all really begins anyway.
Yeah?
Sure! Here you are, out in the field, working for the Organization... Today, you're one of us.
I guess it's a start.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

After each mission, we get our review. It just tells us what we got this mission. The moonstone is a synthesis material.

Come see me when you are ready.
Well, there you have it. Welcome to the fold, Roxas.

Do you know that we actually have 2 Keyblade wielders, Vexen? It's true!

Today we'll get tutorials that are actually useful!

Music: Lazy Afternoons

I am Marluxia, Number XI.
Okay. So what do I have to do today?
Today your job is to collect hearts.
Um, how do I do that?
Roxas, could you summon your Keyblade for me?
Well...sure, all right.

Lucky Number XIII... At last, a chosen wielder of the Keyblade amongst our ranks.

This is back when Keyblade wielders were still chosen and not trained or inherited (although this is the case for both Roxas and Xion).

New Music: Sinister Sundown

Whoa, what are those?
Hmph. Nothing to be feared.
So, Roxas, shall we put that power of yours to a little test?
Use your Keyblade...and defeat those Heartless.

When I said useful tutorials? This is not one of them.

This is how combat is usually going to be. The enemy data is on the top right of the screen. Notice that we don't have Scan yet. It shouldn't matter that much since...well...it's Shadows.

They pose absolutely no threat. I just stand around for a minute and none of them managed to hit Roxas.

This is also not one of the useful tutorials.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

But what are Heartless?
Dark creatures who roam about, searching for hearts. They come in two larger varieties. The onew you just defeated are known as Purebloods. Purebloods don't release any hearts when you defeat them. In other words, don't bother with them. Your mission is to collect hearts, after all. The other variety-

Music: Sinister Sundown

Forget about the Shadows.
Take these out, Roxas. They are your real targets.

The locking on system here is worse than BBS or Re:CoM since there's only one pair of shoulder buttons and one of them is reserved for shortcuts. You'll get used to it soon, though.

Anyway, those are called Yellow Operas. They can attack with Thunder and by charging at you (because electric charges, get it?).

I just barely missed the screenshot of their attack, but there are still some things to note here:
1. These ones can actually hit Roxas.
2. The heart points on the top left is filled after we defeat these Heartless.
3. There's a CHAIN! written below the amount. That will be explained later along with the ring around the target Yellow Opera.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

Why are they so special?
Did you notice? Hearts appeared when you defeated them.
Right...
Your job is to collect those hearts.

Hearts Points will be used more than Munny.

Is there any trick to it?
None. So long as the Heartless are felled by your weapon, the Keyblade, the hearts will be captured.

For gameplay purposes, though, you still get heart points even if you didn't use Roxas/Xion (or Sora/Mickey in multiplayer) to kill the heartless.

I see. And what happens to the hearts I collect?
They will gather as one, and create an almighty force known as Kingdom Hearts.
Which is...good, right?
Completing Kingdom Hearts is the Organization's primary objective. And to do that, we need all the hearts we can possibly find.
So that's what the Organization does? Collect hearts?

So what have you guys been doing all this time? Sitting around talking and waiting for Xemnas to make a decision?

Wait, then-
The rest of us can defeat Heartless, but we have no way of collecting the hearts they release. Eventually, the hearts will turn right back into Heartless.

In gameplay this is reflected by Emblem Heartless defeated by other members giving out a gray glow instead of the normal pink one. My question still stands, though.

You see, then, how special you are?
Hmm...
With power like yours-

Music: Sinister Sundown

Heh. Here come more of them. Each one is a gift, Roxas. Squeeze every last heart out of them!

So basically, if you defeat Heartless within a short time you will receive more Heart Points. The time is represented by the ring around the target. Longer chains give better bonuses.

What the tutorial doesn't say is that chains can only be started by defeating Emblem Heartless but can be prolonged by defeating Pureblood Heartless as well. Killing the Pureblood ones won't give any Heart Points, though.

I'm going to call it Hearts from now because calling them HP won't work for obvious reasons.

...I may have gotten a bit rusty :sweatdrop:. The blue number in the top is the bonus Hearts from the chain.

Some of you might have noticed that the yellow HP bar decreased from previous images. That is because I used a Limit Break. It will be explained later.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

I am amazed. That Keyblade... The things that could be done with that sort of power...

Planning to betray the Organization?

Umm...
I have high hopes for you, Roxas-as do we all. Defeat the Heartless, and help the Organization reach our noble goal.
Um, all right...
Shall we RTC, then?

I didn't show it, But Marluxia actually became our partner for the last 2 seconds of the mission.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

The 1.05 multiplier is the mission multiplier. It usually increases in later missions..

Oh, and the Yellow Operas drop Moonstones. That's how we got 3 of them.

I didn't know what a heart was, or how it even mattered. But at least I knew what my part was.

I shall be joining you on your mission today. Take care of what you need to and then check in with Saix. I am all ready to go.

You talk as if we can "do" anything beside talking to people. Which we are going to do now, but still...

Music: Lazy Afternoons

The ORganization may call upon you to meet other objectives-perform recon, for example. But regardless of the task you have been given, your primary orders still hold. You and that Keyblade of yours serve us best by collecting hearts.
So, even if I'm given another job, I should keep taking out Heartless while I do it?
Correct. Today, however, the two happily coincide.

Music: Sinister Sundown

Like the tutorial said: The white dots are the Heartless, so we just have to go there and defeat them.

There are only these two types of enemies. They mostly appear alone so it's not threatening, but you still can't heal so don't get hit like I did. The Dire Plant's only attack is shooting seeds at you one at a time.

The treasure is hidden in the corner that was/would be filled with trash. gently caress the scoring of that minigame. What were they thinking? That one was basically "Do you have 2 Negative Combo?"

This is the only Heartless that group together. It's not hard since there's Zexion to help you. But the thing about chains: The enemies killed by your partner won't prolong it. You still get the Hearts, but it won't be boosted by the chains.
Also, this is mentioned in the tutorial, but you prolong your chain by hitting the Heartless. It's just that the bonus time from hitting them is very small compared to the one from defeating them.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

Now we get to RTC, right?
Leave, already? I, for one, would apply myself a bit more.
But I-
Yes, yes, you did as you were asked. Mission accomplished...but...

It's hidden behind Zexion's portrait, but you can see the "hat" clearly on the right.

You don't have to eliminate them all. It's your choice. Just like I don't have to respect you for slinking back to the castle while there's still work to be done. And if that doesn't matter to you, just remember the Organization rewards those who make the extra effort.

And how would they know? I'm talking about when Roxas does solo mission since for this one it's obvious how. Do they go back to check if the mission is actually done? In addition to going there before the mission to seal off some exits? If so, why bother giving missions in the first place?

Music: Sinister Sundown

I'm going to do missions fully on our first visit whenever possible.

So it's back to killing Heartless, I guess. I never noticed that hitting enemies with Kingdom Key produces stars.

The heartless are now in a slightly harder-to-reach areas.

There's only one group of them, though. The rest are all alone.

This GIF shows some things:
1. Both colored hearts
2. The Thunder attack from the Yellow Opera
3. How the Hearts aren't affected by Chain if Zexion kills the Heartless
4. How your partner can gently caress you over. I could just change the AI in the Config but the other options are worse since Limit Break is a thing, but that comes later.

Fully completing a mission just gives a white flash (which I can't show for obvious reasons). There's no Mission Fully Complete written or anything.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

I trust you'll exhibit equal diligence in your missions going forward.

If you didn't bother killing more Heartless, you'll go straight here.

Yeah, umm...
Just what is Kingdom Hearts? Marluxia said it was some kind of...of force.

16 years with 7 full games (+online games and tech demo and rereleases) and no one still understand what it is. I know that it's part of the charm, but at least they should explain what it is.

Yes...?
And when I defeat the Heartless, those hearts pop out and become part of Kingdom Hearts, right? But like, what's the point?
Kingdom Hearts will complete us. That's the Organization's goal.
Complete us? Complete us how?

Zexion: How exactly we will use it is still a mystery. Vexen and I are researching it. Hope nobody kills us before we found it!

Roxas, you and I and all the Organization's members are what we call Nobodies.
Well, that's not very nice.
With a capital N. It's a name, for those of us who are missing a vital piece of who we are: our hearts.
I don't have a heart?

This question is just as ridiculous as "I can breathe?" but since Roxas is 10 days old I think we can forgive him. For now.

Correct. Like all of us, you entered the world without one. But you can help us get them. Kingdom Hearts is made of the very things we lack-a multitude of hearts. It has the power to complete us.

That's a step toward understanding what Kingdom Hearts is. Still very far, though.

Are you starting to see why you're so important?
Each of us has a vital role in the Organization.

For example: Lexaeus' job is to increase the average power and quietness level significantly while Larxene's is to increase the bitchiness level and Demyx's is to increase the average laziness level.

Yours is collecting hearts.

Oh, those aren't what you're talking about. Then what are your jobs? To cause trouble in random Disney Worlds?

Yeah, I get it.
Well, I just hope we can count on you to "get it" done.
......
Any more questions?
No... Sorry.
Then we should be getting back. Come on.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

Take a guess at what the next tutorial mission is going to be about.

If we didn't kill the new ones, we get...let's see...

Synthesis materials instead of potions. And one less fire. Sure, why not?

Music stops

Would it have made a difference? If I had a heart...would that make me a somebody?

Larxene...right. Um...

Hi Xigbar!

She already left. Meet her on-site.
Oh.... All right.
This time, we expect you to try out magic for a change, instead of relying solely on the Keyblade.
Magic? I know magic?
Only if you arm yourself with some before you leave for the mission. See me when you are ready.

Vexen! How did you just appear there? Please don't be creepy... :ohdear:

If we talk to Saix...

You will need magic for today's mission. Come see me once you have a magic installed.

Hoo boy. This is the most hated part of the game. The limited magic system. Let's procrastinate with Saix!

You still haven't installed any magic? Be quick about it.

Fine. Let's go to the panel screen.

This is where we equip for the missions. Everything is equipped here. Items, magics, keyblade, acceccories, armors, abilities, EVERYTHING. Even your level has to be equipped here. At least that means you can easily try a Level 1 challenge.
The slots show how much is used and how much is opened. We will get more slots opened throughout the game.

You can see what we have equppied on the abilities screen. I'm going to show it before I start every mission. The problems with this system:
1. Your magic is limited, just like your items. They replenish at the end of every mission, but it's still a case of "I won't use it. What if I need it later?" For example: In this mission I can use Fire 3 times since I equipped 3 of them here. The items will be gone forever when used, though. LIke normal.
2. You have to make everything you want fit within the available slots. For this one it's unimportant since we don't have enough to fill all of them up, but it is very annoying later. Do you want 2 Cures or Scan and Guard? Or do you want to bring Fires or Blizzards?
3. There are some panels you can get later that will multiply its contents. It comes later, but you have to somehow make it fit with all your other panels. It can get very annoying as you're forced to reequip the panels.

Also, there's something about a submenu in there.

Basically you can store it like a deck system so you don't have to do it every time. Just most of the time.

And with Fire equipped, let's begin learning about magic.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

Umm, hi.
Ugh, this is the worst. Whose idea was it to send me along on your stupid baby mission? Do I look like I run a nursery school?

At least you're the fourth in line for the baby missions, Larxene. And there's a theme to it, which you're nicely part of.

......
Let Demyx handle this stuff. It's not like he's good at anything else.

Well, he's good at initiating unfair minigames in the middle of his fight, so there's that. Not like he's going to use it when he's our ally.

......
What? WHAT? You got something to say?
No...
Pfft, you'd be nothing without the Keyblade.
...Oh ho! I just got an idea.

Love Roxas' reaction here. Also recent trailers for KH3 actually made me pay more attention to people's eye colors. Like Larxene's here.

You can do today's mission WITHOUT your Keyblade.
What? Why!?
Because I said so, that's why! Saix told you to practice magic today, didn't he? Well, sink or swim.

Remember when 4 days ago Roxas could barely utter a word? Now he can talk back to Larxene! He grew up so fast...

Well, you're not gonna learn if you keep whipping around that oversized key.
Yeah, but...

Music: Sinister Sundown

Go on, take it out-and you have to use magic!
I'll stand here and watch.
(Thanks...)

As you can see, we can't attack because Larxene doesn't allow us to. She's going to just stand there while Roxas gets beaten up. Let's get the chests first.

It's easy to find since there's just this small area available this mission. All of them contain Ethers, by the way. Ethers restore 1 of each magic, so it has more effect if you equip different types of magic. But then it would be a pain to scroll through them, so that's your choice, I guess. It's useful when you got into situations like this...

Oops! I used all my magic! And I can't attack! What do I do now!

(Sorry...)
Start over. And this time, do it right!

And then Larxene replenished out Fire supply. Good thing I don't have to reload my save! I don't want to use the Ether now.

Enjoy this GIF of Larxene unflinchingly tanking a bullet in the face.

All right, enough fooling around. Fire homes on the enemy and the flower dies in 1 hit with it, that's what I did.

Yeah. Expect those kind of stupid mistakes to happen. The controls in this game aren't exactly the best...

......
Ugh, at the speed you move, we'll be here all month... Go ahead. You can use your Keyblade this time.
Wait, what happened to learning magic?
Do you want to finish this awful mission or don't you? Just get to it.
(Well, since you asked so nicely...)
Oh, by the way, if you need to heal...do it yourself.
......

When I played this on a DS the L button is broken so I can't use the shortcut. So it's a pain scrolling and I only use 4 types of magic: Fire, Blizzard, Cure, Cura. Yes, Cure and Cura have different effects and not just a straight upgrade.

As I mentioned previously, you can use items you picked up on a mission without equipping it, though it only works on that same mission. And if you're wondering why I'm at different positions, it's because I'm being chased by 5 Heartless.

Normally you'd use potions when at low health but I used a Limit Break instead. No, it still hasn't been explained yet. The game is nice enough to let you use it before the tutorial. I'll show the Limit Break when we get to its tutorial mission.

Music: Lazy Afternoons

Oh, Larxene... If you came back from Castle Oblivion you would've known that there are missions WAY WORSE than this.

......
If you're our big-shot Keyblade wielder, then we're in deep doo-doo.
......
Ugh, can't you even hold up your end of a conversation?
......
You'd better pull it together, or we'll never finish Kingdom Hearts. Unless, of course, we put somebody else on Keyblade duty...

Insert witty remark about Larxene's betrayal here.

What? You have somebody else?
None of your beeswax. You just worry about defeating Heartless and collecting hearts for us. Maybe, one day, you'll be almost mediocre at it.

:mediocre:

......
Ugh, let's go-before you kill any more of my brain cells.

Like Marluxia, Larxene actually became our partner for the last 2 seconds of the mission.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

We finally get Scan! Now we can at least see enemy's HP bar.

The more I learned, the less I seemed to know.

At least we have gameplay and banter to break up Roxas' monologues. It would suck if we are forced to listen/read them all at once, maybe with just a screen basically saying "The next day..."

...

What do you mean that's actually how it goes in the movie!?

Agree. The mission with Larxene is great in that Larxene is so bitchy it wraps around to being funny. Love how she half-assed the second part of the mission. Our next mission is kind of like that too. It's a shame that most of the time Roxas will be paired with Xion. And that most of the banter (and gameplay) are reduced to pages of narration.

Considering you can have up to four players in multiplayer mode, I think the game really missed the mark when you realize there's only one mission where you get two partners and none where they pull out all the stops and give you a full team.

So being paired up with Xion for so much makes a lot of sense narratively, but it hinders the game in its own way.

True. I mean, you can at least partner up with Saix or Xemnas who usually just sit around in the castle doing nothing.

Starting from now I'm going to post both the map and battle music at the start of the mission.

Reconna-what? What about fighting Heartless and collecting hearts?
Oh, there's far more to the ORganization than that, boy. Our work wouldn't go half as smoothly if we didn't gather the needed intelligence before hand.
Fortunately, you are in good hands. I will be by your side today to help stimulate that insensate mind of yours. First take a look around the immediate area, and report anything unusual you find. And don't go wandering too far until you've carefully examined the clues closest at hand.

Welcome to the tutorial for recon missions. It's what I think the best kind of missions, but they're very rare.

What I haven't mentioned until now is that EVERY TIME you begin a mission you get this information screen for 2 seconds. During it you can't attack/examine/use magic/item. It's annoying.

Anyway, in recon missions you just have to examine things. When you're near things you can examine Roxas will have a "?" on his head.

I think they sell jewelry here.
Anyone can see that.

The reason this is my favorite is because we get banter with whoever's with us. Sadly there's not many recon missions in this game.

This spot's paved with different tiles. It's like a road...
Fascinating... And?
Uhh...
We'll never get anywhere with you simply stating the obvious.

I think there's only a grand total of 5 other recon missions in this game. 2 with Xion, 2 with Xigbar, and 1 with Xaldin.

Wow, what do they sell here?
That's your job to find out, idiot.

There are a lot of shops.

Well, there are a lot of shops.
And?

It's a big town.

It's a pretty big town.
Is that all? You should have figured out that much when you got here.

Both choices converge here.

This could be the center of town.

This could be the center of town?
Could be? Are you asking me or telling me?

Business seems to be booming.

Business seems to be booming?
What, because you saw a couple of shops?

Both choices converge here (again).

Here's what I see: This whole town was built along a mountain. That's why the roads slope. Houses have been built along the terrace. And at the top is a station. The trains there are the town's primary system of transit.

Based on its location, we know the tracks are probably elevated.

Now, what about this path you pointed out?

You figured all that out just now?
But that's just it! I only stated what I saw. There was no "figuring" involved. That's the next step: analyzing the data you find. The clothing and jewelry shops tell us how these people live. This whole town is a blueprint of their lives.

Vexen deduces that "the track is elevated" and that "this place is downtown". He's so smart that he doesn't think of it as "figuring".

......
Distressing. Very distressing. Your mind wasn't made for this, was it? Well, you're not off the hook yet, boy. If I let you quit with these results, I'll be the laughingstock of the castle. Follow this path and investigate the remainder of the area. And stay on the path, if you please! Everything you need to know about this plaza lies along it-provided you are capable of connecting the dots.

The next places to examine are all along the path. One of them MUCH further than others.

Oh, right. There's enemies on the way. There's possessors who can...possess. They attack VERY slowly, though so it's no wonder they come out pre-possessed in KH2.

Shadows are also here. Both of them are Pureblood so we don't get any Hearts from them.

That's what happened when you get possessed. As I said, they attack very slowly. If you do get possessed, you can wait for your partner to free you (shown above) or just jump out of it.

An annoying thing about this game is that when there are enemies you can't examine anything (except treasure chests). It's annoying when you want to, for example, drink a potion that will make you smaller so you can go into a small hole.

An underground tunnel system? It's shuttered.
Note the number over the door. That's this gate's designation.
It says number four.
Precisely. Four, not one. Which means there are multiple gates.

It's locked.
You don't have to open every door we pass, you know. Try to remember that we run a covert operation. The town may be quiet, but it's not empty. If you allow yourself to be seen, YOU'LL become the target of investigation.

There's only 3 people in here. Not counting the ones in the mansion, there's only Hayner, Pence, and Olette. All the FF gang is nowhere to be found in this game.

Arches, staircases... Seems like an easy town to get lost in.
Easy to get lost? Your job is to be mentally mapping this place! Think of this as a landmark. Consider it a clue.

Why would we need to mentally map the place when there's an actual map of the place down there? (Because there's a status effect that will disable it).

Oh, and the checkmarks appear for areas we examined. So that's nice.

The entrance is shuttered. It looks like the road leads right into this building.
Then you should have already pieced together what the entrance is for.

All right, then, what have you learned?
Well, umm...let's see. The town has a lot of overpasses and underpasses. And the tram seems to circle the plaza. Oh, and there was that entrance that looked like it led underground, but it was shuttered.
Anything else?
Huh? Oh, umm... Err...
Never mind. Wouldn't want you to hurt yourself. You're showing some improvement, at least, even if your natural talents do fall woefully short of my own.

Maybe it's because Roxas wasn't a scientist? At least he hasn't been creepy during the mission.

......
You're done, boy. Go ahead and RTC.
I could've figured it out if I had more time.
Oh? Is that so? Then take all the time you like. But don't hold yourself up to my standards. Little steps for little minds.

Of course we're going to continue investigating!

The entrance with the shutter leads into this area, and then the road stops. We know the road is for the tram... So this must be the tram yard.
At last, a modicum of intelligence. My teaching is paying off!

The nice thing about recon missions is that it gives insight to the design process of the worlds. Like this area that was/would be infested by bees.

The treasure is way up. It has a Blazing Shard.

This spot's out of the way and surrounded by buildings.
But why would they leave the space open? It's kept clean, which means what?

That the garbage minigame isn't available?

People pass through here a lot?
Precisely. Finally, a glimmer of insight?

But while I applaud your effort, you need to be able to see these things at first glance.
Oh...right.
Your goal should be to gather the maximum amount of data in the minimum amount of time. Spend too much time dallying, and you risk being seen. Sometimes the locals will be wary. You need to be warier.
I understand.
Today's mission was just an exercise. I am satisfied. Let's return.

Vexen likes us! :buddy:

Umm... How often do I have to do this?
Whenever the Organization needs to know more about a world, naturally. Each world is unique, with its own terrain, values, Heartless population-any number of variables that could be turned to our advantage in the missions ahead.

Wait, so Heartless population is normal? I thought it's because of Xehanort loving up things.

Wait, "every world"? You mean there's more than one?

Yes, Roxas. You've been to two already.

Yes, boy. You didn't think you'd be mulling about here forever, did you? You will visit many worlds for many reasons...but our ultimate goal remains the same.
Kingdom Hearts.
That's right. Now come along.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

If you didn't finish the mission completely, you get 1 Potion, 1 Dodge Roll, and 2 Fire Recipe.

Dodge roll is an ability that works the same as in other games. Fire recipe is a synthesis material for Fire. Yes, material as in you need to collect many of them.

So, um-
Do you know what a Limit Break is?
No...
It is the most powerful move at your disposal-one that only works when you are on your last legs.

No, that's not a perspective trick. It is a big Shadow.

A Heartless.
Time for some practical application.
Huh?

There. Now you're on your last legs.
Let's see you use your Limit Break and defeat that Heartless.

Yes. We start a mission with 1/4 of our max HP. Lexaeus is STRONG.

This Shadow can actually hit us and we will die in 2 hits (if we didn't heal).

And the mission is done already. That's the quickest mission so far.

You don't even have to actually use the limit break! 2 Fires can kill him. (I still haven't used the shortcut function).

What the tutorial doesn't tell you is that every time you used a Limit Break the yellow gauge will decrease, so you can't just spam it. Sometimes lowering your HP into the yellow bar can be too risky, so Limit Break is not always the best thing. Especially since you're NOT invincible during it. Still glad it exists, though.

Yeah?
Organization members are often asked to conduct solo missions. The only person you can count on out here is yourself.
So I've noticed. Nngh...
You and that Keyblade are invaluable to the Organization. With your job, however, comes risk. Each mission will pit you against more and more Heartless.
And I have to face them if we're gonna complete Kingdom Hearts, right?
Correct.
So what happens when Kingodm Hearts is finished? What good does that do us?
We will unite with it. You and I will gain hearts of our own.
I don't understand...
When the time comes, you will. In the meantime, there are deeds to be done, and only you can do them.

Lexaeus: I don't know how it works exactly. That's not my job to know. It's Vexen's and Zexion's. I hope nobody kills them.

Wait, I already used that joke.

So you need me.
Yes.
Are they good deeds?

Lexaeus almost straight up confirms that it's not good for most people, just the Organization.

Right...
... We should return.

Like Marluxia and Larxene, Lexaeus will join the party for the last 2 second of the mission. Unlike Marluxia and Larxene, Lexaeus won't be joining on any other mission.

In other games this title would be normal. In this one though, it's foreboding.

It's you and me again.
Okay.
Check in with Saix when- Well, you know the drill. I don't know what they've cooked up for us, but let's get it done with style, huh?
Right.
Oh, by the way, Roxas, today will be your first really-real mission. That means you should definitely prep your weapon beforehand. Oh, and if you want to practice what you've learned so far, we've got the Holo-Missions all set up for you.
Holo-Missions?
Yup. Basically, they're a way to re-experience missions you've already been assigned.

Holo-missions are good if you want to redo a mission for grinding. I won't use it, but it's there.

For some reason the top screen has TWNTW as the world in this screen.

The layout for the holo-missions is the same as the layout for missions from Saix. That I haven't shown yet.

The Skill Gear gives a new weapon. For Keyblades it's called Missing Ache. The weapon name will be different if you played multiplayer and the character uses a different weapon.

This weapon gives +5 strength and +3 critical %. The description means that the ground combo will consist of 4 hits. What it didn't say is that the air combo will be 2 hits only. That's...kind of a big deal.

The good thing in this game is that you automatically have Combo Master, so you can try out the Keyblade without any enemies. The bad thing is that you have to be in a mission to use it and you can't change equipment during missions so it can be annoying going back and forth. I'll equip it just for the stat boosts.

We can see what the Keyblade looks like. This one's not too bad, I guess.

Here, take this and take a hike. (Obtained: Potion)

Thanks, Larxene! The one in the brackets is the information bar. Some people will give items if we talk to them on certain days, which is why we've been talking to them every day (aside from the usual RPG tradition of bugging everyone). If we try to talk to her again...

Get lost. You're blocking my light.

You know, if you want light you can just ask Roxas to make it for you. Light is his element, after all. :wiggle:

Wait, wait...I'm getting an idea... Nope, it's gone.

As I said, holo-missions and Saix's missions have the exact same layout.

The clear bonuses are the ones you will get for completing the mission the first time only. The game doesn't tell us which one you won't get if you don't complete the mission fully, but it doesn't really matter since I'm going to do them fully anyway. The random bonuses are the ones you get by praying to the RNG. In this mission, it's Fire Recipe/Blazing Shard/Moonstone/Potion.

I'll just post the Summary for later missions unless there's something interesting in the others. And yes, there's these for the previous missions too. You can see it when picking holo-missions.

Music: Lazy Afternoons
Music: Sinister Sundown

Yup.
......
......
Sheesh, don't talk my ear off. ...You ready or what?
What? Oh...oh, yeah.

The red parts is the area transition that's available.

There's nothing here, but it's a nice touch that it's called "Under the Tracks" instead of "The Usual Spot".

There's Shadows here. They don't give Hearts, so they don't count toward the mission status.

This chest contains a potion.

Great... Aerial heartless while we only have two-hit air combos... Dick move, game.

You know, as a reminder that we're playing on Proud Mode. And that the party members are still useless. You can't see it here, but Axel is just standing there following me and not attacking the enemies. You had one job! :argh:

To be fair, this battle is actually not that hard if you read the reports and know that you can avoid the Possessors by jumping. And if the Keyblade didn't encourage you to do ground combos.

Of course. More aerial heartless. And a new one! That's Scarlet Tango. It attacks by launching fireballs that bounce around. It attacks slowly but the only way to stop the attack is to kill it. As you might guess, it's immune to fire which is the only magic we have now. Great.

Limit actually works longer the lower your HP is when you start it. It's indicated by the white line in the HP bar. You can see how limits can be amazing.
You can also see how Axel is definitely not amazing. You know, Vexen used to be my least favorite member of the Organization. After seeing how much they help against the enemies, Axel has taken that spot. Conglaturations. A winner is you.

Screw you, Axel.

We can open these chests during battle, but it's easier to do it after. They contain Shining Shard (synthesis item) and Potion respectively.

When going back there's actually a ground enemy (beside Shadows).

:stare: This is early. Bulky Vendors have no attacks. They just escape after a certain amount of time. They move faster after getting damaged, but Fire takes care of them.

Bulky Vendors apparently operate on the same rules as Pureblood Darkness. They don't give out Hearts and won't increase the mission gauge, probably so you weren't hosed if it escaped. It gives a ton of money, though.

Just kill the Heartless on the way back and you'll finish this mission fully.

I was just gonna report to Saix and then go to my room like I always do.
Go to your room!? Oh, Roxas, Roxas...

Last one there has to buy the winner an ice cream!
Oh, sure, now you tell us!
No fair, Hayner!
Better get flyin' if you don't wanna end up buyin'!

The three of them run past Roxas and Axel.

Hmm... Must be some kids who live here.
Really? They sure acted weird.
Yeah How do you figure?
Why did those last two seem to enjoy getting pushed around like that? They were even making those "ha ha" noises.
You mean laughter? Sometimes people with hearts do that even when it doesn't make any sense.
Oh... Then I guess they're different from us.
C'mon, let's get some ice cream.
Why?

Axel: Because I got an ice cream addiction.

Whaddaya mean, why?
Because we're friends.

Axel: I've been in only two missions with you but sure, I won't pass up a chance to spread ice cream addiction!

And that is the source of Roxas' famous quote that we'll hear at the end of this game.

Sort of... That, or laugh at stupid stuff that doesn't make any sense. Like those kids we just saw-they were friends. C'mon, I'll show you how it works.

Pence exits stage right and Hayner enters stage left.

Yes it was! I saw you drop it! You owe me an ice cream! Get back here, Pence!

Same thing but with Hayner and Olette.

Come on, Hayner! You can go one stinking day without ice cream!

Starting from now we're put straight into The Grey Area.

Music: Sacred Moon

The Block (2) means it'll take up 2 slots. The second slot is used for an upgrade but since we have no upgrade for Block yet, it'll have to stay empty.

This is why the panel system sucks early on. There's really not enough space.

Hmph. Here, take this. Make use of it as you see fit. (Obtained: Ether)
If only we'd met sooner, Roxas... You would have made a fine addition.

The line after the item is actually the one we got for talking to him again. I'm just going to show them together like that from now on.

Marluxia and Larxene planning to betray the Organization, we know this already. It's interesting that the only reason they chose Sora over Roxas is because Sora is more skilled, but then made him forget all of his abilities anyway.

Here, I believe you deserve this. (Obtained: Panacea)
I hope you continue to apply yourself.

We're slowly getting the approval of other members! :unsmith: Panacea is an item that cures status effects. Slots are too limited so we won't equip this.

Some will be mandatory, but beyond that, our policy is that you set your own workload. The order of execution is also for you to decide. Start with the missions you feel most prepared for.

Like the tutorial said, we can choose whichever order we want but we just have to complete the first one. We will do them all now.

Music: Lazy Afternoons
Music: Sinister Sundown

As you can see, the world in the bottom screen has been replaced by the target. We just have to search for them.

There are other enemies too, but they don't count toward the mission completion.

The Watchers can either shoot out laser bullets or laser beams. There's not really much difference between those attacks, but you can't use Reaction Commands like KH2 so it's harder to deal with them. There's actually 2 of them here.

4 of them is actually kinda dangerous since we're still level 1, but thankfully Larxene is here to help. Unlike a certain fiery Nobody.

Limit Breaks are still great. If my HP is low and I didn't say anything, just assume I used a Limit Break. Oh, and the chests contain Potion and Iron (synthesis item).

The last Watcher is hiding back near the starting place.

Easy.

It's just 13 seconds of them sitting on the tower. At least it's skippable.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

We leveled up! :toot: We still have to equip the level up panel, though.

For the days with multiple missions there won't be any title for them. Therefore later on I won't be showing them. Just keep in mind that every mission we complete advances the day.

Music: Sacred Moon

I'm going to tackle those kinds of days all in one update. So let's start the next mission.

Shadows are the only Heartless we'll find in the Tram Common and The Woods.

There's a whopping 7 chests to collect here. The contents are Blazing Shard, Blazing Shard, Potion and Potion.

There's the fifth chest with another Blazing Shard, but more importantly this screenshot shows a big problem with this game: limited inventory slot. Because limited ability slot isn't enough.

Remember the second screen of the Items slot? The one filled with items you picked up from chests and drops? You can only pick up a total of 6 items. And there's 7 chests here, not to mention the drops you might get. Great. :sigh:

The Heartless are all here. All of them are Dire Plants. Fire one-shots them. There's 8 of them, but only 5 will spawn at a time.

A powerful enemy, you say?

Better get some chests I missed first! At least with full inventory you can see what the chest contain before deciding whether to give up the chest's content or discard an item. And I can show the chest and its contents in the same picture. Normally the chests disappears so I couldn't do that.

Anyway, this is the Heartless warned by the mission summary. How bad could...

:stare:

It took almost Roxas' entire health bar in 1 combo. And it restored its HP. And this is on level 2. On level 1 it straight-up kills Roxas. Which I know because I forgot to equip the level-up panel in the first take and had to reequip it and redo the mission to try this. Because the holo-mission won't be available until you advance the days.

Get ready to see this screen a lot. It's a nice touch that there's no heart there.

Oh look! It's our good friend the Dusks! We just have to survive for 1 minute. We can kill the Dusks, but it will always spawn more so that there's always 4 on the field.

For this mission is best to just stay in the corner and block their attacks since I swear the dusks are harder to deal with than KH2. At least in Proud Mode. I don't know how to describe their attacks, but there's two kinds and both can be blocked. Don't get too greedy and try to kill them with Limit Breaks because you're not invincible during them and this can happen:

Or this:

:sigh: Just block and bring Potions and you should be fine.

...

Optional Boss: Zip Slasher

:frogout: I did this through the holo-mission after clearing the missions. The Zip Slasher only has one attack, but that attack will take most of Roxas' health and restore its own. But the saving grace here is Marluxia. Here's what I did:
1. Get hits on it. Probably 2 full combos, but stop whenever it blocks or jumps back.
2. Block when it spins.
3. If you block successfully, repeat step 1-2.
4. If the block isn't successful and you get hit, use Potion until your HP is full and then repeat step 1-2.
5. If you get hit and you don't have any more potions, do step 6-7.
6. Do 1 combo after it spins. Then run away. Bait it into spinning if necessary.
7. Be far away from it when it spins.
8. If Marluxia got hit by the attack, he will use Mega Potion and heal you too. If you get full HP because of this then go to step 1-2. Otherwise repeat step 6-7.

It's annoying and tedious, but you're not meant to do this now anyway. I just do it mostly to show that I can (also that I have too much time).

All the rest of them tend to be easier because you'll have more powerful weapons and the level difference won't be as bad.

True. It's REALLY not worth doing this right now since our reward is...a Hi-Potion :confuoot:

And we got a Hi-Potion from beating that Zip Slasher. Not even remotely worth it since we don't even have space for it.

Huh? What are you talking about?

Axel's right there, so the tutorial team Castle Oblivion crew hasn't gone yet, right?

Fine. Let's go do our mission.

Sounds simple enough.

Music: Lazy Afternoons
Music: Sinister Sundown

What was today's target again? A Guardian?
Huh? Oh, yeah, I think so.
You are such a zombie. Want me to go have all the fun while you figure it out? C'mon.

The Guardian is our second "new" Heartless that's just a recolor. The first one is Scarlet Tango which I forgot to mention because I confused it with Red Nocturne (which was in KH1). The Mega Shadow isn't recolored since it's just resized.

The Minute Bombs are...bombs. They normally attack by headbutting, but it can also start a countdown. After the countdown ended, it will explode. Or you can also cause it to explode by using fire. If they exploded, you still get the Hearts but you won't get the chain bonus.

These three treasure contains a Potion each.

Watchers start appearing inside the Underground Passage.

The gates also start appearing inside the passage. They work the same way as before.

Not opening that gate leads to a 3-way intersection with one of them blocked by this gate with a different color.

At the end of the other way is a chest with Blazing Shard.

The switch to open the cyan gate is in the room barred by the yellow gate. All the other entrance to the room is blocked by colorless (unopenable) gates.

And the way forward is blocked by the magenta gate with the switch right next to it. And a reminder that you can't examine things except treasure chests when there's enemies around (enemies not shown).

The last treasure chest is in the room with the cyan switch. This mission automatically ends once you kill the Watcher, so make sure to get it before then. If you forgot it's no big deal. You can just do pick it up later on the holo-mission and leave without finishing it. Oh, and all weapon panel ends in "Gear".

When we go through the area that was barred with magenta gate...

Right.

Not sure why they put it there, but whatever. We still have to go through the side street, so it's not like it's warning that the Guardian is in the next area.

New Music: Tension Rising

Here we go, Roxas! Keep your head out of the clouds!
Right!

The Guardian only has one aatack: A big laser. It deals a third of Roxas' health, but it's very easy to avoid: just move left/right when he's going to shoot.

I think this is a good time to talk about status effects, since Axel's having it right now. Each of the 13 elemental attacks will cause different effect, which is status ailments (SA) or special attacks (...also SA but I'll call it AE for attack effects.)
1. Nothingness -> Null Defense (AE): Attacks ignore defense. Can be brutal, but it's not actually a status effect so it's just a matter of luck whether this procs or not.
2. Space -> Shoe-glue (SA): You can't jump, thus you can't do aerial combos/glide/whatever. Signified by a 1 ton weight (like Axel there). Magic makes this a non-issue unless the enemy is immune/you ran out.
3. Wind -> Air-toss (SA): You'll get tossed into the air, unable to do anything and taking more damage. This effect ends once the character lands back on the ground. Signified by the tornado. More annoying than dangerous.
4. Ice -> Freeze (SA): Normal freeze as in you can't do anything. You can thaw by button mashing. Still better than the wind effect.
5. Earth -> Halve HP (AE): Attacks deal half of MAX HP. Extremely dangerous. Heal immediately or quickly kill the enemy. It doesn't happen that often, but it's very scary when it does happen.
6. Illusion -> Flip-foot (SA): Controls are reversed. Signified by question marks. Annoying but you can get used to it.
7. Moon -> Silence (SA): Can't cast magic. Signified by ellipsis. Can be dangerous if you're facing a physical-resistant enemy/you're on low HP but no items left.
8. Fire -> Ignite (SA): Continuous damage. Signified by fire. Just use cure/items.
9. Water -> Drain Damage (AE): Attacks will drain HP. Annoying but not dangerous. I think the Zip Slasher uses this element.
10. Time -> Rewound Defense (SA): Nullify all defense boost from levels. I'm pretty sure the boosts from equipments still applies, though. Signified by Lv. 1 speech bubble.
11. Flower -> Blind (SA): Most physical attacks will miss. Attacks will look like it hit, but instead of the normal impact the word "Miss" will appear and the enemy will be just fine. Signified by sunglasses. Just use magic, but can be annoying if you ran out/the enemy is immune to magic.
12. Electric -> Jolt (SA): Contact with anything except floor (allies, enemies, walls, boxes) will cause damage. Signified by electricity. Annoying, but not that dangerous. Hitting allies will damage that ally too.
13. Light -> Radar Zap (SA): The mini map is replaced by a white screen. Annoying, but if you memorized the world already (due to there being no new worlds in this game) then it can be ignored.

tl;dr: most of the status effects are more annoying than dangerous but the attack effects are actually dangerous.

Every character has a 10% resistance of their native element, such as Roxas to light. That doesn't mean they're immune, though.

This is a shot from another take where Axel is ignited by a Minute Bomb's explosion. This game isn't playing with Re:CoM or KH2 rules.

Anyway, defeat the Watchers first for extra Hearts, then kill the Guardian. Just avoid the laser and you'll be fine.

The reason characters did not join the party in KH1, that Mickey was consigned to a single cameo at the end of the game, and that nothing in the various worlds actually plays into the larger plot with the exception of the things directly affecting Sora, Riku and Kairi, is because Disney did not want the characters to crossover. It's more that, to have a game that expanded upon the plot of KH1, they needed to introduce more original content. In the end, there's no difference to Agrabah in KH1 or 2 except Jaffar is aligned with the Alliance of the Villains who don't do anything in KH1. It's Riku who winds up kidnapping the Princess', The villains in KH1 don't actually support each other, and like Maleficent and Pete in KH2, have no connection to the actual Ansem/Organization plot. They're just obstacles to conclude that worlds event, they have no far-reaching consequences, and ultimately they serve no purpose.

Again, this is by design. The entire reason that Kingdom Hearts was "worlds" traveled to in a spaceship, and party members didn't join and the whole "World Order" thing, was an excuse to explain why only characters who are allowed to appear all over (Donald and Goofy) join Sora's quest. The initial idea was that as is traditional for most RPGs, Sora would be joined by Aladdin, Jack, Peter Pan etc. Permanently over the course of the game. Disney, for their own reasons, didn't want this.

But...this ice cream stick that says WINNER... I have to ask him what I won.

In the comic the "WINNER" stick isn't rare and the prize is shown right away (it's more ice cream). In the game they made such a big deal out of what the prize is and I don't think it's ever revealed. It's probably icy friendship. Or creamed friendship.

Link panels are where the puzzle part of panel management come from.

The Double has a 4 next to it, just like the Block has a 2 next to it. You can't change the shape of it. For Block we don't have anything to use to link to it, but for Doublecast we can link any magic to it. All magic linked to Doublecast gives 2 casts. So the 3 Fires linked gives 2 cast each while the rest give 1 cast, so we can cast Fire 8 times in this configuration.

With 6 casts, we don't need ethers. Linking is very useful, but it can be hard to make all of them fit.

The Loaded Gear's description is Transforms your weapon and boosts your Magic to give it more power. It gives +9 strength, +12 magic, +2 critical %, and +1 critical bonus. The Skill gear gives +5 strenth and +3 critical %. Obviously we're equipping it.

The Keyblade itself is just a recolor of the previous one. The ground combo is back to 3 hits but the air combo remains 2.

(Obtained: Blazing Shard)
Wonder what it's like there, anyway. I've never been.

Pay extra attention to the intel I've prepared for you in the mission briefs. Use the data on your targets to decide which panels you should take into the field.

I swear, we're there's worlds beside Twilight Town and TWNTW in this game!

We need you to eliminate a specific Heartless. Roxas, you are in charge.
Me? Oh...okay.

(I'm in charge, huh?)

We can go to the Side Street and Station Heights, but neither spots have the target Heartless.

There are just these Heartless. Best to use physical attacks on them since we're not going to get chain bonus for exploded bombs.

We can access the Underground Passage from the street. All the (used to be) colored gates are open. I don't think the (used to be and now still) uncolored gates are going to open all game. Oh, and both of these has potions.

The Poison Plant is in the Tunnel.

Its only attack is a bullet seed that can't be blocked but easily dodged. The attack deals half of Roxas' HP because Proud Mode. The report says that it also has an attack for close-range but I didn't see it.

It has more HP than Guardian but it's easier to deal since Fire is effective. You can burn it, but it can blind you (both happened in that picture).

Trying to block the bullet seed gets me into Limit Break area which allow me to conserve Fire. Which is good because on the way back plenty of Dire Plants spawned.

Xion hasn't been revealed to use the Keyblade yet. She only uses magic in this mission. It's still strange that enemies killed by her releases gray hearts, though.

Good thing we have Fire here, right? It doesn't matter that much since remember when I said we can't examine anything except chests when there's enemies? It turns out we can RTC while there's enemies there, too. So that's nice.

Xion went into the portal. Roxas went away from the portal.

Bossy coworkers?
Yeah, the "dream team" that got shipped off to Castle Oblivion. Dreamy for me, because they're gone!
Oh...
Too bad you and Poppet didn't get to spend more quality time with them.
Poppet? Who's that?
Xion, of course. Who else, kiddo?

A not-so-subtle reference about Xion being a puppet. Get it? Puppet, poppet? :suicide:

My name's not "kiddo."

Some rings have abilities, but not this one. The panel slots in the earlygame are very limited, as you can see.

This is a very short mission.

The chest contain a Power Unit. Power Units can be linked to gears to increase the strength. Yes, gears can be linked too. I don't remember, but the wiki says that the strength increase depends on the gear.

The Side Street has these two and nothing else. The Deserters are in the Sandlot, which is the only other area we can access. I told you this mission is short.

Music: Rowdy Rumble

Okay, two Soldier recolors... That's fine...

:sigh: There's more of them offscreen and they're all running around. Great...

The Deserter's only attack is kicking Roxas. And only after you kill one of them. After attacking once, they will continue running. You'll want to kill them during this part.

Killing them in the first place is a pain since they're ALWAYS running around unless you manage to kill them. Which is hard when, you know, you can't hit them. Even Fire's homing properties can miss since it is slower than them or it might hit the bench on the sides. I mean, look at the bottom screen!

They do stop sometimes, but definitely not long enough. And there's 15 of them, with 5 of them at a time.

The mission is short, but you might spend quite some time chasing them down. Anyway, it automatically ends once you kill the last Deserter.

Roxas started to leave.

I don't find blocking to be worth it because they might swarm you and block only works if the attack comes from the front. It's better to dodge roll, I think.

Speaking of Soldier recolors, I was always disappointed how a majority of the "new" enemy Heartless in this game are just recolors of existing ones. Even with the actual new ones, those Heartless get a bunch of recolors as well. At least not all the bosses are copy/pasted.

Yeah, it's a real problem. It's worse than the original Chain of Memories since those will just scale the level of Heartless according to the floor you're in. And being on DS is no excuse since it lost to the game on GBA. And your last sentence is true; not all bosses imply that some of bosses are recolored, which is just :effort:

Something the matter?
Good...morning, Roxas.

Why must you be a spoilsport?

This is pretty much the same as magic link. To unlock the weapon abilities you need to link Ability Units (which we don't have right now).

The first one is with the Loaded Gear while the second one is with Skill Gear+Power Unit. Definitely not worth changing from Loaded Gear.

Which is why we're sticking with the same configuration as last time.

This place is refreshingly quiet with Demyx gone.

That's just what Demyx himself was saying anyway. He's talking about Larxene, but still.

I've arranged for you to be alloted additional slots as you complete missions for us.The harder you work, the more panels you will be permitted to install.

Th-thanks.
You too, Xion.

This chest has a Potion.

There's just these 3 types of Heartless All of them are easy to handle now that the partner isn't just sitting on their rear end (screw you, Axel :argh:).

Blazing Shard, Potion, Potion respectively. After exploring, we go to the Station Plaza.

New Music: Destiny's Force

Our target!
You ready for this?
Yeah.

Boss: Darkside

Yeah, it's nice we found the target and all, but treasure first! I have to sacrifice a Potion but whatever; we have 20 of them.

The Darkside can create a shockwave. Just jump over it.

It can also shoot orbs. Just block it while locked on to him to deflect it.

It can put its hand into the ground, creating shockwave in the process...

He grabs a...planet? basketball? from the ground and releases it into the air.

After that rains of orbs will fall. It's slow, so you can dodge it when you see its shadow. Even if you do get hit, you can just shrug it off since the damage is very low.

Finally, it can spawn Shadows. It's not a threat. You can hit its head during this time.

As for damaging it, just jump and hit its hand. Or use Fire.

Darkside got nothing on Zip Slasher.

Video stops here

But in Cutscene Land, Darkside is trying to punch Roxas...

...and ends up knocking his Keyblade away.

So Xion grabs summons it.

And uses it to defeat Darkside. Too bad Darkside is a Pureblood Heartless, so no Hearts for you.

I don't remember it too well, but Axel said he took me here my very first day with the Organization.
And then he bought me some ice cream again after my first mission. Said it was the "icing on the cake."
A little something extra?
Exactly.

Slot Releaser makes one new panel available. Obviously, you'll want to get as much of these as possible. Frosh Shard is just a synthesis item. Blizzard is ice magic, as you might guess. I hope it's with Xion.

You just had 3 missions in a row with Xion!

Okay? As if. Word has it at least one of the folks we sent to Castle Oblivion has been terminated.
Terminated? But that means...

Forget Castle Oblivion, we're going to Agrabah! We're finally getting out of Twilight Town!

Is it true about Castle Oblivion?
That's no concern of yours.
But what about Axel?
Who knows. Perhaps he is among the lost.
But...
No buts. There's work to be done. Get yourself ready.

Equip a weapon panel and show me. I'll tell you if you've done it properly.

We already equipped it for a while now, Xaldin. Let's talk to him again.

Good. It seems you have at least a rudimentary grasp of panels. You may as well have this. (Obtained: Hi-Potion)
I've nothing else for you. Move along.

Huh. This is new.

Have I neglected to mention the new shop? Conduct your business there before missions.

Some missions have a minimal rank, requiring every player to fulfill that rank. Ranks also affect what the Heartless might drop. Better items are droppable as your rank increases.

:syoon: How cute! The Moogle have their own cloak! It's the ONLY Final Fantasy character in this game.

Roxas. What's yours?
...... My name is of no importance, kupo.

I'm sad that the pom-pom is too big to fit in the portrait.

But... Hrm.
Are you here to shop, kupo? Have a look, kupo, at my wondrous wares.
Okay, let's see what you've got.

FINALLY we get to use the Hearts and Munny that we have collected. About time!

Most of these are pretty self explanatory.

The items needed to synthesize are displayed on the top screen. Hi-Potion restores 50% HP, Mega-Potion restores 40% HP to everyone, Hi-Ether restores 2 casts of each Magic you have, and Limit Recharge restores the Yellow HP area. We don't have the materials for the rings yet, so they don't matter. We can make Hi-Potions now, but it's not necessary yet. We're going to get more this mission anyway. We won't synthesize anything right now.

The shop, meanwhile, sells more useful things. I bought the Slot Releaser, Level Up, Triplecast (all linked magic have 3 casts), Power Unit and everything in the next picture.

Obviously you can only buy one of each (except items and magics). The Chrono Gear gives the best stat boosts out of them all. The Soldier Ring gives better stats and ability than the Brawl Ring.

Even with the expansion, we're still kinda limited on slots. Combo boosts will increase your power as the combo goes on.

I'm not going to mention the stat boosts from the Keyblade since there's too many of them. I'll just show the stats for those of you who cares. The Keyblade itself has the same color palette as before and its combo is exactly the same.

Really, game? You're going to hide the world even though we can see it on the top screen and Saix just mentioned its name? Alright then.

New Music: A Day in Agrabah
New Music: Arabian Dream

And we can see the world's name within seconds after entering. Kinda useless covering it up.

......
What's wrong? Dazzled by the new scenery?
Do you think it's true-about the members stationed at Castle Oblivion?
Ha ha, is that seriously what's eating you?
We might have lost a comrade. Maybe multiple comrades. That doesn't bother you at all?
As if.
......
Look, the faster we get this mission done, the sooner you can RTC and get your answers.
Fine.
Let's go, kiddo.

This is a recon mission, so this is going to be a long one. At least we're examining the abridged verion of the KH1 Agrabah.

This chest contains a Panacea.

With the new levels and weapon, the Scarlet Tango dies in 1 combo so it's not a threat anymore. Loudmouth dies in 1.5 combo. All it did is heal itself and all other Heartless around. It can also do a wind attack, but it normally dies before it has the chance to do so.

What's all this lumber lying around for?

This gate is blocking the way.
And what a gate. This city must be big on security.
Well, we have to do something about it if we want to get past.

Is this a shop? It's deserted...
Yeah, as in "full of desert."

A sand dune, here? That's kind of odd.
Different strokes, I guess. Maybe they like beach volleyball.
You really think that's it?
H ha ha, no. No, I don't.

Big door...
Probably leads to the royal palace.
Probably? Are you just guessing?
As if. Take a good look, High walls, ornamental carvings... The construction's different than the rest of the city.

These dishes are covered in sand.

These levers work similarly to the gate and switch in Twilight Town. Just smack it and...

...the gate will be opened.[/i]

The Dire Plants mentioned in the briefing shows up here. They die in 1 combo. Combo Boost is amazing.

This stall is half-buried in sand.
Remind me to build MY city someplace less dusty.

No sand piles up here.
Which means they must've just built this scaffold.

Potion. Meh.

Are they selling pottery...or sand?

There are signs here of somebody trying to clear the sand.

Again, the gate to the next area is barred. We can't go through the upper door.

What we have to do is hit this structure to drop the box.

Then hit the box toward the taller boxes. Then we can jump to the area with the lever and more things to examine.

A pile of rope? Hunh.

The wall here is falling apart... I guess it's an old city?
As if. Look closer. The bricks aren't eroded. This damage was all done recently.
By what?

Lumber, rope... What's all this for?

You can tell I did this on a different take. You don't need to examine everything I show. All of the ones where it just has one Roxas line is optional.

This lever opens the gate so we can proceed. You can see the treasure chest that we can't reach in the distance. As we proceed...

......
I guess them's the breaks when you build your city in the middle of the desert.
......
Past that, not much to mention, though. Seems like a pretty normal town, yeah?
Huh?
Still with me there? I've seen you spaced out before, but this is ridiculous.
What? I'm fine. I'm fine...
Let me guess. Castle Oblivion?
......
Like I said: the longer we take here, the longer you're gonna have to stay in the dark.
I know.

I told you this is going to be a long mission.

This door is boarded shut...

We have 20 of them already!

Look at the size of this dune.
It's cause we're next to the city gate.

Me?
Yes, you. How do you think it ended up like this?

of the city's location?

I mean, we are in the middle of the desert. Maybe this is normal.
Heh heh, normal? As if. Look at the city walls. They built them high to prevent exactly this from happening.

they need the sand for something?

Sand comes in handy... doesn't it?
Ha ha, right, if you're trying to build the world's biggest hourglass... Think. The sand's placement is too random to have been gathered on purpose.

Both choices converge here.

this was all some kind of prank?

You know, somebody's idea of a joke?
Some sense of humor you've got! Remind me never to make you mad.
Why?
...... Roxas... This is the work of a sandstorm. Multiple sandstorms, from the look of it.

the city was hit with a sandstorm?

That would explain the damage to the walls.
Attaboy, Roxas. You're right on the nose. This place got hit by a sandstorm. And not just once or twice, from the look of it.

Both choices converge here.

I guess the high walls around the city weren't high enough. Now, how 'bout the lumber and rope? Roxas, give me a damage assessment for the city.

things could've been worse.

It's just a little wind and sand, right?
As if! Get your checked, Roxas.

the city was devastated.

This whole place is a wreck.
Yup, and that's not all.

Both choices converge here.

All the building supplies lying around, and that scaffolding? That means they're repairing the city, which means it's serious.
"They," who? The citizens?
Who else? And it looks like a major effort. There may be somebody leading the operation.
You think so?
All right, Roxas. We've got what we came for. Let's RTC outta here.
Okay.

You're saying that we should RTC when the mission still isn't complete? Okay then. Let's go back.

What now?

:siren:Disney CharactersTM!!!:siren: :derp:

These must be the locals. Normally, I'd be able to just slip on by, but the way you stick out? Well.
(Thanks.)
We'd better take the long way around.

If we keep trying to go through the main door...

We have to use the upper entrance. After we do, the camera zooms in on the Disney CharactersTM

I'll be okay. Besides, the sandstorm's finally let up-now's our chance to patch up the city.
That's true, but still...
You'll run yourself ragged at this rate.
Jasmine, you don't need to worry-I'm fine. And since we don't know when the next storm will hit...
...we need to get everything running again before it does.
If only Genie were around...
I miss him, too, but this isn't a job for magic.
Agrabah's our city. We need to be the ones to fix it up.
Of course, you're right...
Now, I should get back to work.
Wait. I'll help, too.

They both leave. I'm not sure what Xigbar's planning to do if they didn't.

The question is, why him? He doesn't look like royalty.
Does he have to be?
It's not easy getting people to follow you, especially if it involves work.
It's the kind of thing you'd expect somebody in the palace to be doing. They already call the shots, right?
True.
But he definitely wasn't royalty... The girl next to him-now SHE was royalty.
...... So what now? Do we look around the palace?
No need. We have our answers, and we even got a peek at their leaders.

Looks like SE doesn't want to make explorable areas in the palace.

Good, then we can go home?
Why, Roxas? Did you leave the toaster plugged in?
You know why.
Heh heh. C'mon, let's RTC.

The mission might be complete, but we're not done yet! There's still more to explore.

Is this wood for scaffolding?

Did those two come through here?
This door's pretty solid, and the wall's high. The locals might be using the palace as a storm shelter.

Check out all this sand... I don't think we're going outside.
Another storm is brewing.

And that's the reason why we can't go outside.

Heh heh, glad I don't live here.
Plus they have to deal with all the Heartless.
Aha! You picked up on a juicy bit there, Roxas.
Why?
The storm and the Heartless... It's possible they're not completely unrelated.
You think there's a connection?
All right, I think that's all we're getting for one day. Let's RTC.

Yeah. Let's.

Xigbar kills it in one hit. We don't get the Hearts for killing this one. :sigh:

They don't go anywhere. They're gone. Only the hearts they held remain.
But the hearts go somewhere: Kingdom Hearts.
So what if a person without a heart is destroyed-a Nobody like you or me? Does some part of us remain?
As if. We're not even supposed to "be" in the first place. What's there to leave behind?
Then whoever it was at Castle Oblivion-
Gone.
And I'll never see them again?
Nope.

This is a bald-faced lie, as DDD revealed. At least the part that Roxas will never see them again is true (for now).

Oh...
You coming?
Huh? Oh...yeah.

Xigbar enters the portal. Roxas starts walking, but...

Starting from last mission, we'll get a Slot Releaser for every mission we complete. So our panel woes are not going to be as big of a problem. Ability Unit can be linked to gears to unlock an ability. The ability unlocked depends on the weapon.

Oh, this place again. You know, Aqua should've just waited here since it looks like everybody who went into the Realm of Darkness went here at some point. It's like a tourist spot or something!

He looks a lot like you.

Yeah, I'm not bothering to hide who's talking here. The voices clearly show that it's Xemnas and Roxas.

My true name is...

That gives us insight on when this takes place. It doesn't make any sense, though. We've seen how bad Roxas was at speaking in Day 7, so it doesn't make sense that he's this articulate in Day 6. Also, I might be misremembering, but I think this cutscene is from KH2 which explains the inconsistencies.

The time has come...

Xemnas removed his hood, but the camera doesn't want to reveal him just yet.

Man, Roxas dreams about weird things.

Wait, so this takes place during Chain of Memories? But they said that one of the members have died, and when Vexen (the first victim) died, Sora has been messed up REALLY bad! And what does that have to do with Roxas? If Roxas was affected because he is Sora's Nobody, he should've fainted before he even heard about the news. Another inconsistency in the pile, I guess.

Will he wake from this?
I am told he will-provided she strips the hero of all memories.
Then much hinges on Castle Oblivion.
We needn't stop collecting hearts. Number XIV has gained power over the Keyblade, just as we intended. Xion can fill Roxas's shoes for the time being.

Here we see 2 different kind of assholery: Saix's refusal to divulge information to keep Roxas wondering in the dark with Xigbar's sudden revelation that should've shocked Roxas (obviously won't work, because Nobody doesn't have heart etc etc).

I prefer Xigbar's.

You can see how much each mission contributes to the bonus gauge by the yellow bar flashing on top of the screen. The first mission gives 3, the second gives 2, the third gives 4 and the fourth gives 3 too.

Like I said: I'm going to mostly ignore the bonus gauge, so I'm going through the missions in order.

Music: Arabian Dream

This is terrible...
And that's only one of the things that's got me worried.
Why? What else is wrong?
The Heartless-they've been showing up all over Agrabah.
Heartless!?
Yeah. They always appear right before a sandstorm hits. I thought it was just a concidence during the last storm, but...
Oh no... I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

And they leave. This kind of thing will happen a lot throughout the game and it kind of reminds me of the scenes in The Room where people just come in, talk about something, then get out.

Anyway, this is our first solo mission. The Fire Plants are kind of a mixture between Dire Plants and Scarlet Tangos.

This chest contains Loaded Gear+ (2). The stat boost is lower than the one we currently have.

Anyway, like I said, Fire Plants are a mixture of 2 Heartless that are also conveniently here. They can't move (like Dire Plants) and shoot out fireballs that bounes around (like Scarlet Tangos).

The fireball attack also has a long charging time but can't be cancelled (without killing the Heartless).

A single Blizzard cast can kill them, but it has to attack twice. Blizzard homes in multiple straight lines and will pass through enemies, so after hitting a Heartless it can come back and attack that same Heartless.

Assuming that Blizzard doesn't hit the wall, of course. Oh, the chest contains a potion. Amusingly, the fireball bounces over Roxas. The one who shoot it is just around the corner.

In the Agrabah Gate, we found the Heartless warned by the briefing.

It creates a barrier to all other Heartless in that area. The barrier blocks all attacks, physical and magical.

So naturally we should kill it first. It has no attacks, but you have to deal with the 3 Fire Plants around.

A finisher will knock it out and separate it with its book, nullifying all the barriers. It's easier to kill this one first.

Magic is useless when it has its book, but when it's separated, it deals an absurd amount of damage. The amount here has to be added with one whole bar of HP. And that's just with 1 casting of Fire.

It will wake up and try to grab its book back, but you can knock the book away just like moving boxes with the Keyblade last mission. It dies quickly.

The Fire Plants die quickly after killing the Barrier Master. After we kill this one though, a cutscene plays.

It's actually kinda hard finding a nice shot of Abu.

After that they leave. I'm not going to show every time Disney CharactersTM leave. Just keep in mind that after every cutscene they leave unless stated otherwise.

People complained about Disney worlds not contributing much to the plot, but this is definitely the worst one. Oh, the treasure chests have Shining Shard and Ether respectively.

The interactions between Roxas and the Disney CharactersTM is very limited in this game. I guess it's because in KH2 the Disney CharactersTM didn't know about the cloaked people, so they want to minimalize the interactions here.

Anyway, the last treasure is in the same spot as last time, so we can't reach it. The rest of the Fire Plants are also unreachable since they're in the top of the west buildings in Agrabah Street that we can't reach since the box from last mission isn't here.

So yeah, we can't fully complete this mission right now. We'll come back later.

Music: At Dusk, I Will Think of You...

KH 358/2=179 Days of Falling Salty Diabetes
Twilight Station Tower: 11
Sea-Salt Ice Cream: 16

What, no Xion or ice cream today?

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

New reports:

Not stated: The Barrier Masters are immune to magic when they have their books. That's kinda important, don't you think?

Story is not Days' strongest aspect.

You might notice from the last update that there's a mission about collecting emblems.

Which method do you guys think would be better?

A. Showing all emblems

B. Showing the map with the emblems (probably with a bit of A when there's something notable)

C. Both A and B

Today we're going to do the optional missions. We're not going to actually progress the story despite this being a day with a title.

Music: Sacred Moon

Take this. It should serve you well.

This is basically just like doublecast but for levels instead of magic.

So we just jumped from level 5 to level 9! :woop: The Thunder Finish is from Chrono Gear+Ability Unit. It gives a chance of jolting enemies with the finisher. Useful but not really necessary.

These are the missions we're going to be doing. The bonus gauge will double all mission clear rewards.

It seems that Poison Plant has been demoted from being a miniboss.

Music: Lazy Afternoons
Music: Sinister Sundown

That's a warm welcome. :downsrim:

We found the Poison Plant in the next area. I actually got the Headbutt attack this time.

Bulky Vendors always drop something besides Munny. That something is random, though, so you can't farm it.

Music: Tension Rising

The Tailbunker can charge forward. It's a very quick attack but it's useless when it starts so far up and nowhere near Roxas.

It can also charge at Roxas. This one is even quicker than before. Both of these do low damage, though. Like only 1/8th of Roxas' HP.

It can also do a back flip. You won't get hit as long as you're not in a middle of a combo when it does this. It also does low damage. To be fair, we just jumped up 4 levels.

It can land with a shockwave. Meh.

Finally, it can shoot fireballs. I actually have to dick around to show it since it dies very quickly with a Limit Break.

Music: Lazy Afternoons
Music: Sinister Sundown

Blazing Shard and Panacea respectively. There's also Minute Bombs around if you want to collect Hearts.

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

Only the rewards are doubled. On to the next mission!

Music: Arabian Dream

Oh, it's THAT kind of mission.

There's no emblem in the Agrabah Gate. I guess it's so we can prepare ourselves.

Potion and Ether respectively. There's no Heartless in this area, so we can leisurely grab these.

The Agrabah Street, though, definitely can't be leisurely traveled. We have to collect those emblems. How many are there, you ask?

11 in this area. And there's a second area with 5 more. And you have to collect all of them with the green ring intact to complete this mission fully. Collect one without the green ring and you'll have to restart.

It's not actually that difficult, though. Just don't kill the Heartless unless there's no green ring anymore. The emblems are placed close to each other so it's easy to get them with the ring intact.

There's some annoying ones, though, like the one near the west bridge. This picture is me failing to get it.

And there's one in the air. Miss it, and you'll have to kill a Heartless since you won't be able to get back up in time. Oh, and there's only 1 Fire Plant up there. Did I mention that Heartless doesn't respawn after death?

Collecting all emblems in this area with rings intact gives us our Mission Complete. Still not full, though, since there's more in The Palace.

Potion and Potion. The second chest is kinda hidden by the ring. You can also barely see the emblem way up in the top right corner that requires another leap of faith.
There's 1 Fire Plant up there with another one just behind the area transition. Did I mention that the rings persist throughout the areas? At least the rings won't appear until we go to the areas with the emblems (Agrabah Street in this case), so we can explore the initial area (Agrabah Gate in this case) freely.

You see the shadow in the second picture? I didn't. It's a fireball that hits Roxas after that picture was taken.

Despite all my complaints about this, I actually enjoy this kind of missions. They're actually kinda fun and a break from the normal combat. It feels great when you collect them all by using your movement abilities, especially later when we get glide. Even searching for them isn't that hard since there's big green rings telling us where they are. You don't even have to bother with the rings if you just want to finish the mission normally.
Not in Neverland, though. gently caress emblem collecting in Neverland.

Oh, and since we've collected all emblems here, let's begin harvesting Hearts. :unsmigghh:

Music: Crossing the Finish Line

There's a "X2" showing up to show that the rewards have been doubled. Usually it blocks the item name which is why I didn't show it last time.

Music: Rowdy Rumble

Next mission is the Deserters mission again. They're in The Palace. There's some treasures here, but...I forgot to collect them before finishing the mission.

They spawn 8 at a time instead of 5 like last time. And there's 16 of them.

Blizzard works pretty well since it can hit multiple at once. Limit Break still works well. Air combos actually work extremely well since just 2 hits means that we reach the finisher more quickly.

It's over pretty quickly.

Ether.

Back in the Agrabah Street, we have ??? (Can't reach) and Potion. I'm starting to see why Demyx doesn't bother collecting these... :sigh:

And there's no ice cream or clock tower this update! :toot:

New reports:

The Tailbunker report just screams :effort: And we didn't actually see Roxas at the clock tower despite what's written in the diary.
