I don't remember if there's dialog or text in the game that explicitly says "the twin towers were destroyed by terrorists" though.

I feel like if MGS4 was more focused it could have been a lot better. The "war economy" angle could be pretty strong and the way it portrays modern war as a series of proxies indirectly waged between global powers could again be pretty good. The scant gameplay sections you get are not bad at all either - i loved sneaking through the active battlefield of NotSyria and choosing whether or not to help the insurgents was pretty neat. Just focus on that stuff and the game would be better

The crazy thing is that MGS4 has a ton of systems the player has almost no time to engage with because gameplay is so scarce. War economy is an actual system in the game. Prices vary at Drebin's shop depending on the level of fighting in an area, and I think it may even be affected by whether or not you help rebels in an area or if you've triggered a combat alert. There's also stuff like wind direction so bullet drop may be accounted for for all I know. And there are emotion weapons that let you gently caress with enemies' nanomachines to make them break down crying or go berserk. If MGS4 had been as focused as Chapter 1 it would have been the best game in the series probably. As it stands, it's bloated as hell with lazy writing and not enough gameplay, but it nevertheless has some amazing setpieces and boss fights throughout. MGSV went almost in the totally opposite direction where there are fewer big setpieces and almost no bosses to speak of, but it relies much more on conveying its ideas through gameplay and environment design rather than cutscenes. MGS games are very Japanese in their writing in that I'm just constantly thinking "Why do you need to talk about this and why does it take longer to explain it than poo poo people actually care about?" Like they wanted to do an escort mission. Fine I guess. Oh, Emma can't swim for some reason, how myster- "No wait! She won't swim because her dad accidentally almost killed her when she was a kid because he was suicidal over his son banging his wife!" All told through long-rear end cringey cutscenes that no voice actor could deliver without rolling their eyes and thinking of a paycheck. And then there's anything involving Naomi, the least interesting character with the most time dedicated to her story. I'd love to see a modded version of MGS 2 or 4 where they just cut out crap that has no relevance to the story or characters. You can still have fun dialogue, but it would be real nice to skip Raiden doing slam poetry and barfing up cum in MGS 4. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)
