Unfortunately the gatekeepers of American memory of wrestling are the WWE. I have zero doubts Vader would have been a bigger legend in the US if WWE acknowledged him more.

I don't remember where I got this shirt but tonight I'm wearing it in Vader's honor and watching him beat the piss out of everybody on NJPW World.

I had forgotten he and Bam Bam were a team and just watched their match with the Steiners. That's some real good stuff.

Just read about Vader's passing. Very sad news. Legit one of the best big men ever in wrestling, as well as doing good things outside of wrestling like working with disabled veterans in the Wounded Warriors program. RIP.

What I loved about Vader was his willingness to take as good as he gave. I remember being straight up baffled when in the middle of a flag match Bret Hart just up and casually slammed Vader.

Yeah I always appreciate that he was stiff but wasnt unselfish. He didn't wail on little guys because he could get away with. He wailed on dudes with the understanding and expectation they would wail him back

Dream match time!

If you could have one match between Vader and any wrestler ever who he did not wrestle, who would it be. Assume a Vader in his prime of course.

For me, off the cuff, I think it has to be Vader vs. Ishii.

Much like Ishii now, Vader was one of those wrestlers who I wanted to see wrestle everyone, because it always ended up being real interesting how he meshed with a guy.

Back in the early 90's, Marvel did a WCW comic for twelve issues. The first eleven issues were a big story about Sting having to save WCW from his old trainer, who had sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for ultimate power like some kind of Lucha Underground poo poo. After all that was done, there was one last issue and all it was was Vader showing up to straight-up squash Sting and take his title. The end.

That ruled.

Couple of years ago I paid Vader to record a birthday message for my brother, who was feeling depressed. I expected him to just say happy birthday and a few catchphrases but instead I got a several minutes long video where Vader offered my brother his sympathies and related stories from his own life and how he learned to cope with loss and other difficult situations.

He was wearing the mask the whole time.

As far as I'm concerned the man was a class act and I am sad he is gone. RIP.

I'm thinking back to 1995 and what all went wrong. Even with the bullshit ending of the strap match, Vader could have been salvaged in 1995.

He's still a monster here in the early portion of the year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkJuuJhpQsw

But Hogan decisively got him at Bash at the Beach that year and in the aftermath, Vader was pulled into the Arn/Flair angle. When the incident with Orndorff happened, Vader had been reduced to Hogan's buddy for War Games.

Rest in Power Big Van Vader. I remember watching him and Kobashi beat the hell out of each other.
