Runner-up, TRP Sack Race 2021/22
Finally fed up with this garbage Epson inkjet we have at home. I had a Brother HL-2070N for a long time but my wife eventually wanted color capability as well as scanning. We're ditching the scanning requirement but still want color, but I'm tired of dealing with lovely inkjets and long for the prior reliability of my laser printer. It'll be connected via wifi or ethernet, no strong preferences. It will mostly be used for printing return address labels on standard paper as well as some documents for signature at times. We're certainly not printing more than 25-50 pages a month.

It looks like the least expensive Brother color laser is the HL-L3220CDW, which ought to work nicely. Should I be considering anything else in the ~$200-400 US range? I lean Brother because of positive prior experiences but am open to other ideas since I know very little about printers.

Dunno, I recently got a Canon inktank and it's amazing so far.
I'm sure a proper laser printer would last longer but I Got a three year warranty and I intend to print my money's worth well by then.

Just had a copier go from 48% black toner remaining 8 days ago, 24% remaining yesterday and empty today, or in other words it's done 12000 prints in six days

Another nice edge for the inktanks, no more relying on bullshit software estimates of remaining ink.

it's just an estimate, but I also think some chucklefuck has been taking toners out and shaking them when they reach "low". I can't tell, because this is a different site that I can't network into, but to fall over that quickly makes me think someone is. Either that or the dispense assembly is clogged (my second guess), or someone has shook it and the internals have corrupted the counter so even a new toner won't read 100% (my third guess)

I loving hate printers. I helped a local business when their printer kept printing this status sheet (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/printer-constantly-prints-get-esclscannerstatus/fec2a455-8b89-4b06-ba4f-e4f7cc8e0c8d). Turns out its some kinda W11 issue with USB printers. I had set it up on the network though when there in person, but I was trying to remote support today as I'm very comfortable here at home in my pjs. No loving sir could I get that thing to print on the network. After wasting too much time, turns out the printer is using wireless instead of wired. Thankfully I was able to change that from the web panel, though I dont understand why it wouldn't work over wireless when everything was setup right and the PC could see the printer fine.

If client isolation is enabled on the wireless network, you are not going to print anything. It's an uncommon setting on consumer kit but far more common on smb and enterprise kit.

I have to relocate an A3 colour machine and configure it, and remotely configure a smaller machine on Monday and it is my last week before Christmas and I do not need this. I want to chill out and do nothing

small machine was fine, the bigger machine absolutely wouldn't initialise the follow-you printing app until I turned off server communication for date and time and that is enough nonsense for the week. I've also asked the account manager if we need to get a specialist moving crew to move a wide format plotter and he replied with "Right!" Right? That's the answer? What the bollocking gently caress does that mean?

The site I work on is getting vaguely back to pre-pandemic volume levels, but the customer is still allowing a lot of hybrid working so it'll probably never get back to that. I also have an A3 printer in the spaceship assembly cleanroom which died overnight, but looks fine so I need to get facilities to have a look at it

My sister wants to try getting into sticker printing and selling as a side job. She's adamant about using a laser printer for it, despite most places I looked at recommending those Epson EcoTanks. It looks like there's basically two Brother color lasers worth worrying about right now, with the big division being a multipurpose 30 sheet tray or doing it versus single manual feed. Would sticker paper work in the multipurpose tray on something like this? https://www.brother.ca/en/p/HLL3295CDW

had a quick browse of the brochure and labels (so stickers) are supported through the multipurpose tray, so that would work. Just don't run the labels through the main tray, there will be sadness and set the media type to labels on the driver when printing and when loading them into the tray

A bit adjacent to a printer question, but my old pensioner dad just got himself a Brother printer/scanner combo but the app that lets him scan (iprint&scan) doesn't let him preview scans or immediately save portions of a scan as pictures (a thing he used to do with his Epson scanner to scan stamps from his collection, in batches). Is there any software out there that lets him do those things? It gets quite confusing for him to try to save images to crop later without messing something up, and doing the scans individually takes too long.

I swear to god HP purposely hosed over my laser jet 1020. 18 years of reliable service then I updated the firmware and now every other page printed is blank and then jams.

Just bought a Brother.

Oh cool the print and scan software from Brother also seems to preclude printing directly from a webpage or somesuch, you HAVE to use the software to print?

For Android you want the Brother Print Service Plugin to enable printing from apps.

I guess I must be misunderstanding the issue then. The printer's connected and recognized, but doesn't print when not using the scanning software?

Does it show up in the Windows print settings? Is it set as default printer? Does the browser have the right printer selected?

Last time I checked, the brother print and scan app was just a GUI toolbox, not a printer/scanner driver. Did you install the drivers for that model of printer?

Yeah, most printers Just Work™ on modern Android, but older versions definitely required the enabler apps.

Far as I know it's installed and set as default. I even specified and picked out the individual printer when trying to print from his browser.

Can you do a screen cap of your browser print panel? If you use edge or chrome you might be stuck in save to pdf mode.

F-F-FRIDAY NIGHT MOTHERFUCKERS

Is there a thread recommendation for a color laser printer? Im rocking an old samsung laser Ive had since university which works pretty well, but I need a good way to occasionally print full color for hobby stuff.

90% of the time I'm just printing off black and white for invoices/packing slips, but I do want to occasionally print double sided, print color for arts and crafts, and having it be easily accessible from my phone/local-network would be really nice
