Does the "Rescue" button not work? I swear I had it working once but I don't know what circumstances changed that is preventing it now.

For armor, do you prioritize coverage or resistances?

If resistance, do you place a higher weight towards cut or blunt protection?

I started playing Kenshi again and got started in the United Cities. It's been a really fun feast-or-famine kind of playthrough. There's a lot of money to be made between standard opportunistic looting and selling captives to slave shops or turning in bounties. But then everything else is a capricious prick just waiting for an excuse to bully you, i.e. the KenshiTM experience.

I leave the town walls and run into a skimmer that can flatten my squad in seconds. Manhunters debate whether I'm easy prey and worth capturing I always am. A noble hunting party and his retinue of samurai can just decide to hunt me down for sport. "Heroes" in this part of the world are just assholes who can apparently beat me up without impunity. Gate guards will plant contraband on me and then shake me down for a bunch of cats.

I can't wait to one day return to this rear end in a top hat part of the map and burn everything to the ground.

Rebirth is actually a dojo with free room and board where you carry rocks to get swole and sneak out at night for ninja training. You finally become the sensei when you're able to beat up every guard and lock them up in their own cages.

I finally got my squad all fully kitted out with mastercraft scout legs and they're zipping across the map now. One unexpected side effect of the faster unit speed is that I've started to see more of the rough seams of the game unravel. I'm constantly running into stops as the map loads (even with the fast map loading setting turned on) now that I can traverse zones in minutes. It also feels like my guys are clipping into objects or getting stuck on geometry more often, and I have to make use of the reset command or pickup/put down people regularly.

My main wish for Kenshi 2 is for them to iron out the pathfinding and collision.

I'm using those mods minus Shidan's, plus running it on a SSD, and the game still pauses frequently as it loads the map. I really do think it's because my guys can run at 40+ miles per hour now; you don't really notice map loads at a normal walking pace but it definitely feels like you have to do a lot of waiting around when you can zip through multiple zones in a few seconds.

Glad Kenshi 2 will hopefully see improvements on a different game engine.

Agree with timn that the lack of helmet slots ends up being a major downside for Skeletons and more often than not what would take down someone in my robo hoard playthrough was getting domed in the head.

Protip for if you are building a base and want your guys to be able to ingress over bad or treacherous terrain in and around your base while not having to travel (accidentally due to pathfinding or otherwise) outside your walls where bandit, beast, and carrion bird frequent: you can build a wall up the side of an incline with a little creative pathfinding trickery (read: sometimes painstakingly constructing and deconstructing until you get it right) and then place ramps at the bottom and top of the slope to allow your people to go up and down without worrying about walking out of their base.

Pictured below:

Pretty slick idea, will steal it for the next time I do a base.

If you're up for hunting for mats, the Holy Nation lands have packs of wild bulls which yield a decent amount of animal skins and meat. They aren't too dangerous after early game but they do have an AOE attack so caution is still advised.

In my experience, the slaves that you can recruit are the ones who start following you after you bust then out. Once you've walked far enough away from danger, they'll start a dialogue with an option to join.

This is random though since some freed slaves will just thank you and leave, while others immediately bolt for freedom or refuse to run away once released from their cage.

I think I'm pretty far into the game, I'm starting to research AI core stuff, can craft specialist plate armor consistently and so forth, but training up new recruits is still a pain. I've been getting a few escaped slaves with decent starting stats when saving them from the fogman. Is there any way I could engineer this for NPCs or do they spawn with a "will join" modifier?

There's a cheesy way of recruiting enemies from normally hostile factions such as Sand Ninjas or Grass Pirates, etc. First beat them up as normal, and then pickup their unconscious body and carry them over to one of the slave traders in the south of the map or in the United Cities. Drop them in front of a slaver and they'll get captured and put in a cage. You can then liberate them and there will be a chance that they permanently join you once they escape. This is a good way of getting recruits with higher stats than the slave prisoners you normally spring free. It's also a good way of raising faction relationship with the freed prisoner (I always bust out Rebel Farmers to cancel out faction loss from defending myself from their indiscriminate attacks in the beginning since they can be later allied with once you join the anti slavers and speak to the Rebel Farmer faction leader).

If you're not strong or sneaky enough to bust out prisoners, you can always buy their freedom, though it will be more expensive the higher the stats of the prisoner and it's still a random chance they join. That's why I prefer the free method of just busting them out (with the added plus side of beating up slavers). If you do go the buying freedom route, you also want to make sure that you only drop them off and have the slavers capture them as opposed to selling them to a slave trader store yourself, otherwise they will remember being enslaved by you and never want to join you once freed.

I've played Kenshi a couple different ways: a full squad with the story/unique recruits, a full skeleton robo horde, a sprawling base, a smaller in-town setup, and a solo ninja.

Now I'm playing with smaller 6 man squad of permanently itinerant hobos who live off the land, hunting garrus, grilling their meat on open campfires, and limping back to town to sell their hides and rest up in rented beds. This time I'm mixing things up by having each member specialize in a different weapon type and also wearing an eclectic mix of armor rather than optimizing everyone in the same suit of samurai plate, cyber limbs, and Falling Suns by the endgame.

I think I'll purposefully keep it small scale like this since not having to manage a base or a mess of units has been both chill and challenging at the same time. I'm liking it a lot so far.

It is hard to resist the urge to industrialize. Sometimes I'll go hey I have a lot of animal hides from hunting garrus, I should just buy a small shack to set up a tanning bench, and if I can get some fabric I could also start making lighter armor, maybe I should make just a tiny farming plot for cotton, and then...

But I'm determined to go no-base this run and just wander the land. It is in some respects harder because I have to depend on enemy drops, stores, and busting open ancient buildings for my gear. On the other hand, it's easier because my guys are constantly fighting and improving their combat stats.

More importantly, it's very freeing not having to manage a base and supply chains and defenses. I just hunt wildlife for my daily bread, turn in the occasional bandit boss bounty, find a hodgepodge of gear, and explore interesting locales.

When I made a dude max height in the character customizer, he would sometimes have trouble going through doors into buildings. Also sometimes, even though building placement will be green and allowed, a completed building for me might not play well with pathfinding if some of the terrain ends up clipping through it. Maybe that's what was happening for you?

my fav. kenshi lore is that the project got started almost entirely because he bought an asset pack of cool katana animations and wanted to make a game that used them

It's funny how that could easily be the starting off point for a million similar but bad indie projects but it somehow works for Kenshi thanks to its brilliant alchemy of other weirdo features and design.

I've only just got the game and I've ran straight into modded gameplay as that's just how I like to play, but I've noticed some weirdness myself and I don't know if it's down to the base game or not. But I regularly encounter large groups of guards and NPCs standing outside of towns trying to pick up/drop bodies and it seems like sometimes there are double spawns of groups in towns etc too.

It's an odd, janky game, but I get the appeal. I've enjoyed my time in it so far. I'm at like 40 hours and I've done gently caress all tbh.

Guards will throw bodies of troublemakers outside the town gates or put them in prison if there's a police station in town. Maybe one of your mods is interfering with that behavior?

I'm not really a big fan of the Hub for settling other than for the fact that it has a lot of buildings you can claim. It has no proper gate guards and few town traders other than the bar, the other bar slightly north of town, and the Shinobi Thieves trader who'll only give half prices. I'm sure there's mods that address all that but it's a pretty lackluster spot for the vanilla game.
