The reason why people don't like to base in the holy nation is the holy nation is hostile to everyone that isn't a white male. The holy nation however is great for is STEALING FROM. They have places you can go into, knock out one guy, and just steal everything and more importantly, is an excellent source of food.

Seriously, you can get all your books and food just by stealing from the holy nation. There's a few inns that if your steal skill is high enough you can easily get a couple chests worth of rations and food. You just need to carry the food back and you can supply a town of 30+ people just with food stolen from holy nation.

Are there generally popular mods? The only one I'm using just adds zone labels to the map.

Head over to the Kenshi LP by Leal:

Has a list of mods the OP uses (some of them are depreciated) and various other stuff in it and they generally tried to show everything the game has to offer.

As for meat and leather, easiest way to get meat and leather is to head slighty west to the blood rain place where all the beak things are. Either you fight and kill them or you drag them to the hive village and let them kill it and loot it afterwords. Just be sure to have a trader's backpack (ones that have stacking), because they have alot of skin and meat.

. Then some Dust Bandits tried to demand I pay them or they'd bust up my mining operation, and that went well.

I learned that Heavy weapons and security spiders are both good for taking out trash. A fragment axe at weapon expertise 75, the guy can take a swing and hit multiple enemies, and if they're low level enemies like dust bandits then there's going to be less bandits and more pieces of bandits.

Also the security spider mod might be slighty overpowered with their ability to blunt AoE enemies. I rolled over the bugmaster without knowing he was there with 4 security spiders.

In the ashlands on the opposite side of the skeleton boss guy there's the building full of thralls. I can't enter it or attempt entering it without the game crashing to desktop.

don't worry, they'll come to you when you talk to the boss, unless you talk to him with CYBERBEEP

I want to kill them all anyways, but what I'm after is if there's any loot in the building they hide in

Don’t build a base until mid-game. 😛

Go live in the starter town. (forever). or until you're ready to move out. You don't get those things if you live in a town.

There's alot of mods to help with that as well.

Been playing this on an off for years. I had an exploration party go to world's end, recruit like 6 people, start making my way back to the hub, get steamrolled by 3 cannibal patrols at once, spend a few IRL hours dealing with that,
walk past the floodlands, get steamrolled by a broken skeleton and his iron spider pet, repeatedly with reloads, after reloading enough times to avoid that fight,
go slighty though obedience, get steamrolled by 3 broken skeletons and 5 iron spiders at once, I have never seen that many at once, spend an hour with that,
barely leaving obedience, get steamrolled by like 5 fog bugman patrols, had to wait until night to get everyone out,
start sneaking though okran lands, get steamrolled by 2 inquisitor patrols, we get up and heal, immediately steamrolled again by a different patrol, repeat 5 times,
Finally made my way back to base with exploration party, 2 missing limbs, 3 people with other limbs in negative hundreds of damage,

Total loot, 4 ancient science books, 2 skeleton recruits, 4 greenlander recruits, lots of wasted time.

I learned if you stealth knocked out the prayer day leader they'll leave and never bother you again.

Almost-dying makes you stronger. Getting up while playing dead especially makes you extremely tough extremely fast.

Apparently the fastest way to get tough really really stupid fast is to repeatedly take off and put your legs back on in front of an okranite army.

I apparently haven't played this in three years, but I wonder if it isn't time to fire it back up again. Steam says I have almost 600 hours in. I recall my last game had a self-sustaining black desert base operated by a couple of robots, plus a small adventuring party of 3-4 heavily armed weirdos who roamed around looking for trouble. Nothing gets the blood pumping like setting up the crossbow firing squad, popping open some abandoned tower expecting a security bot or two, then getting rushed by a swarm of blood spiders.

The solution to this is to be far enough away that it gives the guy on crossbow turrets enough time to gun enough of them down to make a difference. Or be robots (robots are superior).

On the subject of recruits, where's the best place to get skeleton recruits? I need immortal sentries to be on my turrets 24/7 without need to sleep or eat. People don't leave the turrets unless the enemy dies and that slows down production.

There's the recruit skeletons mod that lets you recruit broken and malfunctioning skeletons that you find in various workshops and foglands. It's very overpowered depending on where you get your skeletons from.

I hope Kenshi 2 has advanced clothing physics so you can see dustcoats billowing behind you as you ninja run and stealth KO an entire bandit raiding party

Do blueprints for the Fog Mask exist? I haven't explored any place that requires them as I anything less than Specialist or Masterwork is icky to me now and those masks never seem to show up in higher grades.

Yes, fog mask blueprint exists, you can steal the blueprint in the swamp. The only place that requires the fog masks is in the ashlands, as it is very inhospitable place to fleshbags, and the gas clouds there are bad for your health.
