Yeah Camille was one of the cheerleaders that got raped by the football team, and it happened in that shed. When she finds out Amma hangs out at the shed she freaks out and hallucinates finding a toothless Amma there.

The dad was alluding to having sex with Adora all episode and it seemed like he got enough drunk persuasion to go in and initiate.

There was an old Civil War era revolver shown on a desk at some point. This could just be a prop for this event Adora is planning.

Hahha me and my friends both noticed that guy being conspicuous - definite extra of the year (or, like True Detectice, a random extra is the killer??) Doing my best to avoid spoilers but the wait is killing me, wanna binge watch this one.

This episode was riveting even when it’s just characters spying on each other from across a party all episode. Adora is an incredible rendering of a cold abusive parent...some may think over the top but there are some unfortunate people like that.

Can’t wait for all the tension to boil over and for the real bonkers stuff to occur

Adora seems pretty accurate for a woman with a personality disorder, which is kind of cartoony in how it’s expressed in behavior and belief. As far as splitting and seeing one daughter as all bad and one as all good, plus shallow and extreme emotions, indifference to the emotions of others, and a need for attention (like with constant mention of a small cut on her wrist that she seems to believe can reopen because of extreme emotion), she seems like a narcissist or borderline case, or some storytelling-convenient mix of those things. Some of what seems objectively true in the early episodes, like her belief that the entire town will notice Camille’s behavior and judge it unacceptable, seems like it might be in part inappropriate self-importance.

The only performance that seems too melodramatic for the world they’ve built is the cheerleader wife/girlfriend. I guess we don’t know enough about her yet, but the actor’s kind of playing it to near-camp level like it’s Desperate Housewives or something. And I’m guessing it’s misdirection so that we think she’s the woman in white, which seems too obvious.

it's clearly the dad who did it right? I've never read the book and have no idea what's gonna happen over the next few episode but it seems to me that a sexually frustrated man married to that woman (who seems to be having an affair with the police chief?) who creepily stalks all over his house hiding his emotions needs some sort of outlet, and why not murder his daughters friends at that creepy-rear end hunting shack full of porn

Holy poo poo this show is boring. Like I dont even know why they have a murder mystery if its just going to be about Camilla and Mom. Also the preview for the next episode was the most "nothing happens" teaser ive ever seen. On the next episode "Kids playing in the field!" "Someone skating at night!".

Hello all

I’m currently working on a video about why the idea of the “killed girl” is so popular in television. What I mean exactly is a story that focuses on a teenage girl in an idyllic/quaint/unsuspecting small town that is killed or vanishes, this brining the secrets of the town to light. The girl is almost always beautiful and also almost always presented as being “pure” - prom queen, virgin, charity work, good grades etc. Examples of this include Twin Peaks, The Killing, Bordertown and Wind River.

This is not meant to put down the individual pieces of media, just to talk about the phenomena. Would anyone in this thread know of any more examples of this trope? I haven’t had the chance to see it yet, but it sounds like Sharp Objects might fit the bill

Sharp Objects is definitely about exactly that - obsession with pure, perfect teenage girls. Sounds like an interesting project! Keep us updated.

I was really turned off during the first two episodes by how, like, obvious and caricatured everything was, but I stuck with it and its been moody, weird and well-done enough to keep me entertained. The ensemble acting is amazing, especially Patricia Clarkson, who is just too evil to even fathom.

I couldn't stand the waiting each week, so I read the book. It is so rare for me to think this, but the I like the show is so much more and wish I hadn't spoiled things. The book was good, but the show is bringing the town and characters and feel of events to life in a way the description in the book failed to do for me.

You might want to expand your net to like Dateline or other true crime features, as they’re kind of the pivot between the real-life obsession America has with murders that press its sex buttons in just the right way and the act of turning those events into narratives beyond what reporters do to make them grist for the news cycle.

Oh this is an old old trope. From the vestal virgins to frozen incan mummies. It's human sacrifice for atonement. You want to kill off the best of our society (most potential) and males lack a certain innocence.

This might be a little left-field, but True Detective is kind of about seeing through this collection of tropes or diagnosing them as part of grotesque, unhealthy masculinity, even though there’s not a central dead white girl and it’s basically the story of two destructive men. It still confronts what’s gross about the construction of pure female victims and what damage follows from that.

I can’t believe it took reading the book and watching four and a half episodes with subtitles to notice that “Amma” is an anagram of “Mama”

Anyway, this episode was loving great. The Calhoun Day stuff isn’t in the book, but was a perfect addition. So incredibly creepy.

I guess I've just lived a sheltered life, but I find the mom's level of outright malevolence a little bit hard to believe for a functioning member of society. Like, she could be 50% less awful and still be the worst person I've ever seen.

It feels like that kind of person would be capable of a little more subtlety and passive aggression, as opposed just outright saying "I hate you, you suck, you've ruined my life." The most terrible things she says would pack a little more punch if she occasionally said something that wasn't terrible.

But then, Maker's was "top shelf" for Wind Gap.

Mostly, I find it weird any company would want to be product-placed in a narrative so focused on alcoholism and abuse. "Maker's Mark: the bourbon of choice for broken, self-destructive people who can't possibly cope with the pain of their memories."
