The problem isn't that they burn out at 19, creating videos full time while being a fake piece of poo poo who knows the Internet could turn on you at any time and that no one worth talking to will take you seriously once they know your job is probably stressful stuff. when i see this poo poo, i always think of doug walker because i know at some point he will probably off himself in a couple years. he was never that great but he found a gimmick and he pushed it so hard he made public video of him going into work and burning all the bridges to publicly quit. eventually he gets tired of the gimmick and tries something else, it was some drama comedy poo poo and it was awful. so he basically had to come back and do the gimmick forever. whats funnier is he was such a douchbag along with his brother and manager that he managed to piss off the rest of the talent and now he is basically alone. now 10 plus years on he is still shrieking and screaming about kids movies. the rest of the talent mostly matured sorta and make actual interesting poo poo. Aren’t a lot of people itt vastly overestimating the amount of money that even moderately popular YouTubers make? I keep seeing the word “millionaires” being thrown around, and it’s always been my understanding that those are maybe the top 0.001% of channels. Someone earlier said they got around $300 for about 2 million overall views. Do we actually know how much the “few hundreds of thousands of views per video, not popular enough to have decent brand deals, but popular enough to hawk loot crates and have a subreddit” types are making?

The idea that revenue is based on YouTube views is stupid. The money comes from people engaging with the ads, ala clicking them. Those who supposedly make millions or six figures are uploading on a daily basis, spewing codec compressed slime out of their orifices to get clicks via having as many clickable opportunities as possible. Please use adblock.

It's not millions but it is still stupid amounts of money. Idk I'm mixed some channels have good production and obviously spend money to get people places and whatever (I like the Buzzfeed Unsolved poo poo) but on the other there's just random algo generated poo poo fest stolen asset flip crap for toddlers making $20k/mo. In general I think YT needs to stop playing this idiot techie game of "we're not responsible for the content on our website lol" because they are ultimately profiting off it all. Valve has been doing the same thing with Steam lately and it is moronic. You're not that unique of a widget and you're going to get backlash for hosting weird pedo poo poo eventually (that's directed at both YT and Valve). People got paid millions of dollars to work on Friends so I think I can live with popular youtube channels making decent money through ad revenue and whatever. I have a harder time understanding why people donate money to streamers who are already raking in tens of thousands of dollars of month. $100 is a drop in the bucket to Shroud but people just shovel it into his pocket

This reminds me of when I was 13 or 14 and using AOL on my old Packard Bell. I commonly hung out in the X-Files chatroom, lol. Anyway, that X-Files chatroom is where I experienced my first totally sick burn. Typically, I would chat and joke with a bubbly attitude, intending on getting more people involved with whatever we were currently discussing(I was "in training" to eventually be a host). One guy didnt realize I was young and he assumed I was in my 20s, and that I was a phenomenal moron. Which isn't far from the truth but I digress... The insults poured out of this guy as if he were some kind of insult professional. One that still stands out is him asking me if I wore teflon pants to control my bodily functions. Followed by "you're so stupid its unbelievable!". So, 13 ~ 14 year old me was just at the monitor while he carried on. I eventually left my computer and cried like a little bitch. lmao. Obviously, I developed thicker skin since then. I plea the 5th on those teflon pants. While that little incident I had was lovely for me, and it is something I get amused by in reteospect, I can't help but wonder at how challenging it may be to people who make videos. But, in my opinion, they loving ask for criticism when they create public videos on social media. I'm 36 and as gently caress about some things but I understand that making videos is a trend for kids now. My brother's kids are obsessed with making YT videos or watching them. I don't exactly feel out of touch about it since most of the stuff on YT doesnt interest me. I DO like Internet Historian's channel, though. Outside of him, I just listen to random music that I dont have copies of or dig up MST3k episodes. My only concern is the knowing that one day the hot trend of streaming reality will eventually fade and something more horrible and confusing to me will peak as the new hook to YT and every other medium. The future, ladies and gentlemen!

Lowtax posted:I disagree with that, these people all create something. I think if they product has value or is actually creative is a different argument, but at least from YouTube's point of view, they are creating things that there is clearly a demand for. Well, obviously there is a product being created, so technically they are creators, but I'm not going to mourn the loss of their creation, since most of it is either asinine or toxic. Like if a company that sold corn syrup to babies went under, I would also not treat it as a loss of anything that should have been protected from being taken away. Youtube has great potential, and there are many genuine creators who use it to great effect, but the self-glorification of vloggers and other assholes, and their attempts to portray themselves as tortured artists being crushed under a corporate boot really annoys me. steinrokkan fucked around with this message at 09:56 on Jul 16, 2018 |
