Applied research and basic research are two different things. You can't just dump money into applied research without ever funding basic research (ie space poo poo too) and expect good results. The last push to the moon resulted in poo poo TONS of tech that is useful every single day and saves lives even though yeah "who benefits directly from us going to the moon???"

My take on Space Force

First thing would be to absorb the duties of the National Reconnaissance Office and probably take over all military and intelligence satellite divisions in the same way that federal agencies were consolidated into the Department of Homeland Security.

There will be increased funding and acceleration of the Prompt Global Strike initiative, which aims to be able to strike anywhere in the world with a non-nuclear weapon within an hour of the order being given. This is incredibly stupid and dangerous, as you're essentially demanding that the rest of the world trust that something identical to an ICBM launch is not a nuclear first strike.

Increased funding and acceleration of the Operationally Responsive Space program, with the aim of allowing strategically useful special purpose satellites to be delivered to any desired orbit on short notice. Things like spy satellites being able to launch quickly into a low orbit for higher resolution and fast observation of an area that aerial recon (U2 flight) isn't possible.

On-orbit anti-satellite weapons will likely be developed and deployed.

Non-nuclear space-based weapons may be developed and deployed (see Project Thor/Rods From God, which would drop tungsten rods that would strike with immense kinetic energy from a heavy, dense object hitting at near-orbital velocity.) This may be the implementation of the Prompt Global Strike program.

Additional testing platforms for new technology will likely be built. More X-37B's, and possibly even something like an X-37B crew variant that could launch into orbit, deploy a special forces team in a reentry vehicle, and put Space Force commandos anywhere on earth within an hour of launch.

Also a moon base to prove that our national dick is bigger than everyone else's.

My take is that this is all the dumbest poo poo possible even though I'm sure it is exactly what moron rear end politicians are thinking.

It's also in violation of international treaties but the USA doesn't give a poo poo about those ofc heh
