were ribbon cables designed like that for any particular reason? was it just the manufacturing process of insulating cables in a flat ribbon was easier than doing something else?

i remember at one point that I was able to buy ribbon cables that were separated into strands of 3-4 wires so you could move them around easier. cant figure out why nobody put them in other configurations.

i had some clips that let me attach ribbon cables flat against my case so "optimize air-flow", and did all the weird 45 degree angle folds to make it look clean inside.

def don't miss that.

:agreed:

also the two-zip-ties method that was one click away from folding the ribbon cable cable so you had to start over

then came the "rounded ribbon cables" which were just flat ones cut and curved and stuffed in a round plastic sleeve that were always the wrong length and looked like utter shite

yeah i had the glow in the dark ones what of it

I imagine they are dirt cheap to mass produce since the connectors just press onto the cable. You can even easily make them by hand!

oh duh i forgot about the connectors.

yeah that makes sense, takes zero skill to do it so it's probably extremely cheaply automated

shit wizard dad

now Fatha is retired he’s taken up scrapping as a hobby - picks up any local metal castoffs and weighs it in at the local scrapyard, keeps him busy and gives him a little pocket money. From this I have a stack of old HDs from junked pcs I was going to just strip out the platters for art projects, but I’m hella tempted to plug them in to a usb converter and have a bit nosey.

one of my friends once found a desktop computer in the "free" pile in her apartment building's basement. we yanked the hard drive to see what was on it and were treated to some doofus's homegroan.

i don't think NMN is neglecting his dad there, he specifically said the old man took it up as a hobby. some people like to busy themselves with non-creative tasks.

it's not like he has to spend 8+ hours a day doing it either. he could do it for like two hours a day. he could do it for a couple days a week.
