i remember at one point that I was able to buy ribbon cables that were separated into strands of 3-4 wires so you could move them around easier. cant figure out why nobody put them in other configurations.

they started out flat because thats the way IDC connectors work, yeah. do you remember that there were 40-conductor and 80-conductor IDE cables? even though the connectors are all 40-pin. well, for higher data speeds (i forget if it was ata100 or ata133) they added a ground wire in between each signal wire, to reduce crosstalk. then people go and mush these carefully separated cables into a round sleeve, and all the data conductors are all next to each other again, and you get errors / negotiated down to a slower speed. round cables were so dumb
