my take: it is some insane bullshit that he got fired for tweets made a decade ago that were very clearly in jest (if extremely unfunny) and which he's directly apologized for since. if he were making those tweets now, if the tweets seemed remotely like serious advocacy for their subject matter, if he hadn't made any attempt to change and do better, or any mix of the three, then sure, whatever, but... literally none of those are true in Gunn's case. the tweets were ancient, were clearly jokes, and dude has gone out of his way to be better than he was a decade ago. the fact that Disney should have seriously known about and expected this, given he was a loving Troma writer who has Tromeo & Juliet, a movie that is half incest jokes by volume, in his filmography makes it even more galling (and before someone goes "HE DIDN'T APOLOGIZE FOR THE TWEETS HE APOLOGIZED FOR THAT LISTICLE," no, he apologized for the tweets too, it just wasn't prompted by people making GBS threads on him like the listicle apology was) WeedlordGoku69 fucked around with this message at 03:00 on Jul 24, 2018 |

Lamps, do you realize you're basically arguing that characters shouldn't have nuance and multiple facets? Like, I would seriously disagree that the "lovable rogue" archetype attempts to have its cake and eat it too regarding amorality- when handled well, it creates a deliberate contrast between the characters' manner and their actions, making them more interesting than if they were just flatly sociopathic. In Han's case, it establishes that, while he's involved in the underworld, he's not any kind of hardened criminal himself; he's all bluster and bravado. This makes him immediately stand out among the other rogues and toughs at the cantina. In Quill's case, it highlights his worldview (and consequently his biggest character flaw); he never once actually stops and thinks about what he's doing, life for him is essentially a big joke that he just coasts through. In neither case does it actually make their actions "better;" it simply adds depth to their characterization that would otherwise be lacking, and makes them somewhat relatable (I guarantee you've known at least a couple Peter Quills, and you've probably known a Han or two if you've ever been involved in sketchy poo poo).

yeah, the important part there isn't that the comments were made before he worked at disney, it's that disney was almost certainly aware of Gunn's hosed up tendencies prior to working for them, to the point where they may have actively hired him because of that like, putting up with it for a long time and then going "oops well guess you're out" when loving Mike Cernovich of all people tries to raise a stink is some gently caress poo poo, regardless of how or why, or even where you land on it being okay or not

Elfgames posted:the "guardians" aren't loving real. the fact that the creators of the movie set up the conflict to be status quo or abject annihilation says everything about the creators tbh i think both you and chitoryu are actually touching on a really good point that extends way past just the guardians movies WWII, as an event, imprinted really loving hard on our collective psyche. these "status quo or total annihilation" plots, which you frankly see pretty often in the action genre, are essentially echoes of the American narrative of WWII, even if they're much lighter in subject matter and importance, because at some point someone realized that poo poo just hits people right in the lizard brain.
