Handsome Ralph posted:As did Pelosi, Reid, and FTFY. Boehner had the same problem as Ryan has now, he was just more vocal/out there about it. He was also the first to have to deal with the Freedom Caucus non-sense. Pelosi is an effective leader which means she makes compromises and is always keeping her entire caucus in mind when she speaks publicly. Usually, that translates to providing cover for vulnerable Democrats which frustrates the base (gently caress squishy Democrats). It's also meant she's had to be led by the base more towards the left at times, which yeah, more frustrating. And on top of all that, there's a real lack of grooming (or appearing to) the next generation of young leaders in Congress/the Party which further contributes to an (fairly or unfairly) image of holding onto power past her perceived prime. She still presided over one of the most productive Congresses in modern memory AND has kept the Democrats in nearly complete lock step in opposition to Republicans. And that's in addition to her being an extremely effective and enormous fundraiser for other Democrats behind the scenes (which is where her real power in the caucus comes from). I think she's still the one we'd probably want leading a Democratic majority but it'd go along way to see her address the above issues (give public voice and take direction from the Democratic base and bring the next generation along in leadership).

Handsome Ralph posted:FBI fired Peter Strzok. https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1029038287657345024 Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo posted:With the news that former FBI Special Agent Peter Strzok was fired Friday, reportedly overruling the official recommendation that he be disciplined with a demotion and 60 day suspension, lets review the clarifying big picture. At the time two years ago when the FBI began investigating a far-flung foreign conspiracy to throw the 2016 presidential election in Donald Trump’s favor, James Comey was Director of the FBI; Andrew McCabe was 2nd in command and Peter Strzok was Chief of the Bureau’s Counterespionage Section. There was ample suspicion then and ample evidence now that candidate Trump’s associates were deeply involved in the conspiracy. Comey, McCabe and Strzok have now each been fired. The President has threatened each with prosecution.

Not selling out to a foreign power is like the lowest possible bar to judge a politician. Let’s all not forget that most of McCain’s most Maverick-y moments came not from ideological differences but from wanting to gently caress over his personal enemies. I appreciate his vote to save the ACA and his campaign finance reforms. Really. But both of those were motivated more as a gently caress you to Trump/current GOP and W, respectively, than anything else.
