I know it isn't the story they are trying to tell, but the barman parts bore me to death. More pimps, cops, and hookers, less Vincent being a longsuffering working stiff, again, for the 5th scene this episode. Also, they really crush it on making porn exceedingly unsexy. Guess with the Wire there was the compelling part of "Will they get the baddies, and if so, how?" whereas this is just sleazy people making their sleazy nut without a question to be answered. Weird that all the women are thinking long-range (except for maybe Shay) and none of the men are. i don't want this show to be judgmental about sex. but i think it was way too blase and romantic about the pimps in s1. like, selling sex is one thing. and it's inevitable in one way or another. but pimping, from what i've read about it, was and is often exponentially more brutal -- far more, imo, than what we've seen on the show. the tone they've established is very tricky to manage. i guess the pimps are about to get outcompeted into oblivion by the porn industry though?

This manner of pimping is definitely going to be outcompeted into oblivion, yes, but pimping never went away. It's just more under-the-radar and arguably more brutal and oppressive as a result. It'll be interesting to see if these pimps we've been introduced to, comfortably filling that "romanticized" 70's pimp aesthetic, decide to transition out of the game as a result, or resolve to adopt the more necessarily covert and brutal aspects of the more contemporary pimp. It's been shown that status is very important to them. Can their egos handle either route

From the second half of the season on all of the "down home pimp wisdom" stuff only serves to highlight how awful and hypocritical they are.

This is sometimes the issue with Simon, in that he is a little too subtle with his messages, and that you're supposed to read certain things negatively. I think that may partially be due to his journalistic background, but yeah, I would absolutely say that there is no way he is intentionally glamorizing the pimps. Was it the pilot episode that ends with the pimp holding one of his girls up in a stairwell with a knife to her throat? Because that was very early on and was placed there to remind you that the pimps were absolutely controlling assholes, and to show all their other behavior is just in service of that. The last episode had one of them literally say that his life is entirely about control, they haven't been shy about it.

The whole point of CC’s plotline in the first episode of the first season is that the show lulls you into thinking that he’s the charming “good” pimp, and then reveals that he’s actually a monster and there are no good pimps.

The scenes in Coney Island were kinda charming and reminded me of a late 90's movie called "Went to Coney Island On a Mission From God - Be Back By Five," where the characters in that movie also went to Coney Island in the winter and found it to be a dystopian hellscape. (Wondered why Frankie didn't visit the Freak Show..) Sometimes watching this show as a nearly lifelong native NYer detracts from enjoying this show, because I keep seeing glaring inconsistencies crop up in the background. Like for instance, Luna Park.. Luna Park closed down in 1944 and wasn't "revived" until 2010, there was nothing but wasteland there in the timeframe The Deuce takes place in. And yet I'm seeing Frankie and Abby walk past LUNA PARK (they didn't even try to blur or CGI it out) and inside I'm screaming THERE WAS NOTHING BUT ABANDONED BUILDINGS AND A BUMPER CAR ARENA THERE, JFC. I know David Simon doesn't have the budget to make everything exactly like it was then but jeez, when I see poo poo like that it just takes me out of the story and I have to silently decide this all takes place in an alternate universe NYC where Luna Park was revived in 1975 or something (something no one wanted to do even IRL at that time.) Also he needed to go to one of the other penny arcades, the one he picked was too new also.. the skee ball machines looked spanking brand new, in the 70s I went there as a kid and they were so old and broken down, with cracks in the corky wood, they looked as if they hadn't been so much as re-lacquered since the 1930s. The Port Authority never had leather-covered (or even vinyl) seats like in the beginning; they were mostly the same plastic seats from the buses! They did get the look of the terminal right though.. dimly lit, trash everywhere, could have been more graffiti, and those vending machines look like they came from a museum.. whatever few there were working in the real PA at the time were busted and had no glass on them, they replaced them with either plain sheet metal or plexiglass, anything with glass got kicked in. Very interesting parallels they made between the porn and the horror industry.

Watching this episode reminded me again of one of my favorite aspects of The Wire, which is just how seamlessly David Simon can weave multiple narratives/characters/plot points into an incredibly tightly packed hour without it feeling overstuffed or overly long. So much happened in this episode, probably enough content to fill 2-3 episodes of most other shows, but everything flowed so smoothly. It is still early in the season but it is looking to me at the moment like the theme of the season is going to be competition: the rival mobs, the new parlors; the college girls coming in to do porn ("like their guidance counselor recommended it!") and squeezing out the whores; the pimps being pushed out by the porn industry; even Candy and Harvey's (amicable) disagreements or Bobby's secret family.

I think that the most telling, hitting-you-over-the-head message of the last episode was that things are changing for pimps, as seen in the way that the Bus Stop Trick of this episode contrasts with that of the first season (which honestly was a sign of things to come, with Lori being a sex worker seeking out a pimp as opposed to someone not in on the game).

I'm fine with this? I also thought it was the plan from the word go. Rather 3 solid seasons that wrap up the arc on their own terms than have it drag on too long because some suits saw a cash-cow or emmy bait.

This is the only show on TV I can watch on a week to week basis and enjoy myself. brings me back to the sopranos or the wire where I can just enjoy one episode at a time and leave looking forward to the next without feeling dicked around.

The Deuce Season 2: We Should Be Proud of Our Perversions (Enjoying how the pimp storylines are developing, with Larry refusing to take what he's given and looking to the future while CC is doubling down on the "real sack of poo poo" angle. Also, still waiting for the other shoe to drop with the mob. Rudy may well be the most levelheaded, upstanding mafioso ever depicted in entertainment. Vincent tells him about Paul's plans for expansion, and even reveals that he has a stake in it...and after a moment he shrugs it off and decides to let it go. Now that he's wielding arson as a weapon against The Horse, I suspect that kind of violence is going to bleed into the lives of our main cast very quickly. I really hope the other shoe doesn't drop with the mob, or if it does it stays consistent with the tone of the show, because I love that they feel like believable people that aren't complete cartoon psychopaths. I don't know what the mob was really like, but I imagine it was often closer to the deuce irl than most cinema where someone gets murdered every 30 seconds for looking at them wrong. That said I'm sure they'll kill someone sooner or later. Seems inevitable.
