The mix of colors and simple shots loaded with vibe reminds me, of all things, of Roger Deakins' work in Blade Runner and No Country for Old Men. It's a beautifully shot show and I hope it gets some recognition for it.

So that trailer for the season finale... who’s getting whacked? It seemed to heavily imply Frankie, but I think it’s gonna be Dorothy now that CC isn’t around to keep the other pimps in line.

Random thought: I wonder what the hippie white pimp from season 1 is up to.

Other random thought: I’m glad I watched with subtitles turned on, because I couldn’t understand a single loving word Vincent’s dad was mumbling.

Well...depends on if you count the screwdriver to the chest or the two hammer blows to the back of the head doing him in. I thought they'd have CC to stick around to show us the decline of his business, but it looks like they demonstrated that in another, more direct way. I'd also kind of expected him to conquer his fear of flying to menace Lori in LA, but...I should've realized where this was headed after they had CC explicitly say he didn't want the dog killed, just to head off the obvious justification.

"drat...y'all murdered the poo poo out that motherfucker." is an all-timer.

Some friends just started watching the show and I had to break the news to them that Gentle Richie didn't make the move to Season 2.

It took me most of that scene just to puzzle out "Wait...is that ARMAND ASSANTE?"

I remember last year they had a preview that looked like Frankie was going to get killed but it ended up just being some rando they dragged into Vincent's bar. But lol with that in mind, who knows.

Count me in as another viewer who totally didn't expect David Simon to give us the satisfaction of seeing CC murdered, let alone by Bobby and Frankie. Definitely a good ending to the season, especially since it just drove home the metaphorical disappearance of his ilk. Also, while I understand that Larry was being presented as an alternative model of how the pimps could change with the times, I still think the show was too kind to him. He was still a massive rear end in a top hat who treated women like poo poo, and while the last episode emphasized this with that girl who went to prison getting in his face, it's gone too easy on him for about half the season.

Thinking back now on the season as a whole, the one element that really didn't seem like it went anywhere was the whole subplot with Paul, his new bar, and his relationship falling apart. I presume that this was only included so that they can integrate the inevitable AIDS subplot into the show next season. Speaking of, since AIDS didn't really become publicly known until about 1982, I presume that the next season will pick up then or shortly thereafter.

The scene with Gene (the guy from the mayor's office) and Chris talking about trying to get more wholesome businesses into Times Square just made me realize how the series will end:

quote:

GENE stands on a Times Square sidewalk with his arms crossed, looking smugly across the street.

GENE: We finally did it. We cleaned up THE DEUCE.

Cut to a shot of what he's looking at: the storefront of newly opened THE M&M'S STORE, swarmed my Midwestern tourists.

I don't mean to upsell that scene with Vinnie and his dad too much, but it's really well-shot and fantastically acted, and it reminds me (I'm sure intentionally) of Vito and Michael at the end of the godfather. I keep rewatching it.

I don't feel like the whole is more than the sum of the parts in the deuce (unlike eg the wire), but I think the individual parts are incredible. Like that sequence where Vinnie goes up to Vermont, and he's in the car at the gas station? That whole bit brought back a vibe of the late 70's and early 80's you really only feel anymore in, like, deep-country West Virginia gas stations that haven't changed in forty years. Whatever else David Simon is or does (and let's be frank, he's kind of a gently caress, even if he is insightful) he's got an eye for verisimilitude through detail that nobody else really has.

I got a feeling that an episode of Season 3 is gonna close on a shot of Larry walking into a clinic waiting room, taking a seat across from Paul and the two giving each other a weary nod as the opening bass riff of "Assume the Position" kicks in.

Sure was funny to see Harvey talk about how VHS was already about to kill Betamax, and it's funny how he mentions CES because eventually the adult film/video industry will actually exhibit -AT- CES years later, and after some rough patches eventually split off and form its own event.

VHS and eventually DVD would make a huge impact as he said, but it was their rental that really cemented the adult video industry.

Had to pinch myself when I realized it was Ralph Macchio playing Haddix, I just knew I recognized him from somewhere..

LOL at the Johnny Carson / Ed McMahon stand-ins for Candy's network interview.

Wonder if Rodney's washed up, he's definitely not staying free on any kind of bail for shooting a cop, assuming he survived (doesn't look good though)

Darlene's exit is hopeful and great.

Welp now season 3 to look forward to...

Definitely feels like they wrote out Darlene and Lori.

The off screen death was a pretty interesting choice but I liked it; Simon really excels at having his characters react. Abby seeing the consequences of her actions coming back was well handled and I want to see where she goes from here.

The Larry turn has been really interesting and while I'm sure most aren't going to ever have sympathy for him for being a pimp; there's probably a case to be made for the society and upbringing he had that got him into that role.

Good season and I'm curious to see how they close out the twins storyline.

Boy, I hope not...the threat of her kid finding out what she actually did for a living has been a recurring theme throughout the season, and in the moment Eileen's dad chided her about putting herself out there to a national audience. I took it as some bullies saw her interview, came in to school the next day with "Hey, kid...your mom's a whore" and provoked a (probably lopsided) scuffle.

Binary Badger posted:

Uhhh Rodney took 4 point blank shots to the torso - I don't think homeboy is coming back.

I refuse to believe that Lori and Darlene are gone for S3. Lori is definitely the way that the showrunners will demonstrate the difference between New York and LA to the audience. Shows set in NYC literally cannot avoid dipping into this well at some point in their run.

Yeah, I'm with you here - I love her character but she doesn't understand that being ahead of your time doesn't mean you're always right or that your actions dont have consequences. I think her and Abby's stories this season parallel each other pretty well around that theme - they're both working on something they believe in but the unintentional price is that they lose someone they care about.
