Hell yes! Subbed to this thread. Amazon is selling the latest edition of Total Warfare: and I play monthly in the Brooklyn Battletech group. We're hyped for the Illclan stuff coming out. We did a Wolf and Blake convoy escort scenario recently, which was pretty fun.

Cool! I ordered the paperback. My group right now is struggling with everyone bringing Assaults to every match for a few months now, I wonder if anyone has a good idea for mitigating that. Also I had a kind of a weird idea: a sort of battle royale but Battletech type scenario? Empty mechs are dropped onto the map before deployment, a semi-random assortment. Players roll 2d6 for X, Y values to determine their starting hex as pilots on foot. Last one standing wins.

So I, in a spur of madness, had this ridiculous idea for a themed game at my large place that is perfect before I move into a much smaller apartment. Like with the new Godzilla movie coming out, Pacific Rim 2 being a shitshow... I was thinking of the Interstellar docking scene being the intel intro to a dice roll to find out just exactly what kaiju a squad of battle hardened tabletop Mechwarriors have to go up against. Motha, Gidorah, etc. - I wanna do something beyond belief since we are always up against standard issue Mechs, Clan or otherwise. I wanna gently caress with my playerbase, I wanna screw with my playergroup. I don't even want them to show up to this game realizing they are going up against a Godzilla-esque monster. I want them to realize they all have to team up against a goddamn kaiju at the last possible moment. Do y'all think that'd be fun? Or even possible? I've been a longtime Battletech player, I'm thinking a Creed sort of fight against a goddamn titan they'd never encountered before. Whether it's triple lasers with Gidorah, or Mothra dropping LSD bombs, or Rodan dive-bombing a Shadowhawk, I would love to do something original on the huge table-space I have available. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHI5xSi_WGA BATTLEMASTER, GET UP I wanna make it a Battletech match to remember.

Yeah, I've played quite a few games, and honestly, the Beginner Box misses some of the more fun bullshit mechanics like heat. Look, if you're not loving exploding yourself for the sake of tabletop glory, you are loving playing Battletech wrong.

Is “roll to confirm headshot” a real rule or some house rule bullshit because I think I’ve lost all interest playing as of today
|
# ¿ May 5, 2019 22:11 |

Yeah my GM makes you roll to confirm headshots. And he was running two tables today and interjected after the insufferable powergamer of our group tapped my head and I got a lucky ER PPC shot to the brain, like maybe the second or third time in over a year of playing against the guy, and the four of us accepted it and moved on, death token on the field and everything. Which led to me getting peeled apart instantly and just totally took me out of the game. loving ugh.

Sorry, let me try to explain better. End of round 2, we enter combat phase, powergamer goes first. In the midst of a flurry of hits, I take two points of damage to the head and it counts as a head hit. The four of us actively at the table didn't think to "roll to confirm headshot" and we move on to my half of the combat phase. I open up with two ER PPCs and immediately blow his head clean off - internal and everything. The four of us at the table all accept it and move on - I even do my piloting skill roll, which fails, I calculate the fall damage and we move on - the GM who is at the other table's game turns around and decides I have to suddenly go back and roll a headshot confirmation, which obviously fails, and then I immediately know I'm hosed and have no chance against the powergamer, because he's been playing this game way longer and I have never won a head to head fight against this guy. Which is what happens and I just couldn't give a poo poo anymore at this point. Honestly I'm just wondering if it's worth even going anymore.

Atlas Hugged posted:I still don't really get what is happening. How do you confirm a headshot? Why are you gaming with an rear end in a top hat who can interfere in your game from a table away? Oh, sorry. If you roll the head as a hit location you have to roll again with a 1d6 and it's only a headshot if you get a 5 or a 6. And it's the only battletech group in town, I think.

Going to wait though until all backers get their stuff and I can just buy these mechs normally through an online store. Extremely weary of Kickstarter because no product has to actually be delivered and more often then not never is or is terrible quality. I'm the same way, but Catalyst games has been solid on actually delivering. This isn't some pie in the sky idea or a full reboot of the franchise or whatever, just an addition to what's already going on. Your money's safe with them.

Stanyer89 posted:Reading through some of the rules I think the weirdest thing (compared to WH30k/40k) is going to be keeping track of the move modifiers for your to hit and your opponents along with different elevations and water. The people I play with use miniature red/white/green dice to track the movement modifiers. On maps it's a little hard to visualize strategy because different buildings/hills have different levels but you can lift up a mini and see exactly what they're on. We also use a straight line laser pointer to track line of sight with a defender's choice rule in case of disagreement (which can be in the defender's benefit considering how easy it is to miss versus limited heat sinks, so it's somewhat balanced)

I may be getting this all wrong. So there's the Inner Sphere which are regular people and regular corps like Comstar (space Verizon) and then after the Succession Wars, there's the Clans on the fringes of space. They are genetically modified super soldiers who are very, very big into silly poo poo like honor and whatever the gently caress. Clanners in tabletop have a lot of special rules around being high/low honor and declaring 1v1 combat, etc. Sadly I always tried to play low honor and they never let me massacre civilians for some loving reason. Bummer. To put it into Star Wars terms, the Clanners are like the A-Wing, and the Inner Sphere are like the X-Wing.

Paint 'em all, let Carcosa sort 'em out. I'm in the middle of hosting a Battletech Royale, which if you're in/near NYC is a large format battle royale for new/curious Battletech players willing to fight to the death. There are absolutely, certainly prizes for those willing to bear their teeth, although not everyone entering is aware of the surprises in store for them. This will absolutely be one hell of a scenario to bear. PM me for details.

Being in a Clan means you get to get rowdy with your boys and do cool Clanner stuff like lay waste to planets. Being an Inner Sphere pilot means doing boring stuff like reporting to your lovely boss and rescuing useless civilians.

I am sort of thinking about just getting the first 2-4 boxes on the thought that they will be the first out and just get the others as they come. My biggest concern with that being I have no idea how well I trust them to have the stock for the others and what shipping will be on the piecemeal releases. Well, I just got an update that they're adding some of the mechs they cut (like the Kodiak) into it's own pack, so that'll be cool.

Yes to both. Basically with the level of detail in the mechanics of Battletech you never really want to do anything bigger than a 4 on 4 match. (I say this trying to set up a 9 person free for all) But in an in-universe sense you want a range of mechs that can recon, harass, lay down some consistent fire, and one or two that can drop the loving hammer, working together as a cohesive unit.

Most GMs usually lay out the era/tonnage limits before a game. Honestly I'd tell you, just pick whatever you think looks cool, and paint the poo poo out of them. Here's a bunch of mine I painted up with Vallejo Mecha: If Gunpla is freedom then Battletech is, uh, like, freedom on cocaine. There's rulesets where like, you can buy a certain mini, and that'll be golden for all of the revisions a certain design might have gotten over the years. Everyone I've met who runs Battletech games is pretty flexible about that sort of thing. Do not worry about powergaming your way to victory. Battletech is largely an excuse to drink beers and roll dice and hopefully something loving hilarious happens, which it almost certainly does.
